Venom: Let There Be Carnage — A Review

4th October, 2022

Yes: it’s a Tuesday night.

Tuesday, 4th October, 2022, if you hadn’t guessed.

I’ve the evening to myself: and fancy a movie.

I don’t know which movies: but HAVE whittled it down to a choice of three.

The Black Phone, Flux Gourmet and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Which one I’ll see?

I don’t know.

But I’ll tell you, tomorrow night.

Once I’ve seen the thing!

Right …

Right at the moment, it’s still the 4th October: and I’m going to get myself off to bed.

I’ve a video interview at 12:30 on the 5th: that I’d rather get a good night’s sleep for.

But … ?

I’ve made up my mind about what to watch.

And settled on Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

I’ll let you know more, tomorrow night.

Venom: A Review

3rd February, 2019.

OK …

It’s just gone half past ten, if you must know.

And I am feeling decidedly annoyed at myself.

For putting my phone in the wrong place.

And not catching it in time: as it got knocked, gently slid off my desk … and landed face down on a floorboard.

You can possibly guess what I found when I picked it up, can’t you?

Yep.

£200 worth of octa-core phone … with a smashed screen.

I am — with some excuse — not a happy bunny.

But one who can, at least, head into town, tomorrow, to see if his meagre savings will get the screen replaced.

~≈§≈~

Right now, though, I’ve just seen a movie: having got back from my family’s place on the other side of town.

Vaguely thinking that I should, at least, try and spend more time with my nephew.

He’s now eight … and, I think, getting a taste for silly voices …

As you’ve possibly noticed from the introductory video.

A bit more time with Jude’s a good way — I’ve found — of putting a smile on a a face.

And certainly got me heading home in a better mood than when I went out.

At least … certainly in the mood for a movie …

You’re right: it’s the one in the poster.

The 2018 release that is … …

Mad Max: Fury Road: A Review … !

5th October, 2015.

Now, it has to be said, I like a film or two, now and again.

Who doesn’t?

After all, I think part of what makes us all human is a desire to tell — and listen to — stories.

All the way back from when — as cavemen/women/persons — we sat around a fire, telling each other of gods and monsters.

All the way to now: when an account with Netflix, Sky or iTunes has replaced the communal fire.

And gods, monsters, myths and legends have been replaced with other things.

Personally … ?

Personally, I’m the same: I like a tale or two.

As, I suspect, do you.

We like stories.

TV.   Books.   Hell, poetic epics!

Oh … and as I think I’m trying to say … movies.

I’ve been looking forward to one for a while, now.

The fourth member of the Mad Max franchise.

The George Miller directed, 2015, film that is …

And, yes: I think ‘Nice’ may be under-selling it …

The Dark Knight Rises: Hmmm …

3/12/2012.

You know, I’ll happily confess, I’ve started this post with the date: as I’m intent on STARTING this particular post at something of a late hour on a Monday night.

With, frankly, the intention of finishing it off, tomorrow.

And with the EXTRA intention … of something else that’s ACTUALLY slipped my mind, at this point.

Oh, Yes!

The intention of making sure I’d tell you of how impressed I was — comparatively — with a film I’ve rented from iTunes, tonight.

Frankly … ?   I’m willing to bet you’ve had a good guess at what the film actually is.

The 2012 film that is the Christopher directed The Dark Knight Rises.

I’m possibly impressed with this …

~~~~~
4/12/2012.
And please note I say possibly.   But let me try and explain the film to you.
Set some eight years after The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises opens with a charity event run by the Wayne Foundation: one that the man himself doesn’t attend, as he’s been in seclusion for quite some time.
After both the death of Harvey Dent, AND pulling out of a Wayne Enterprises deal into clean fusion energy, on learning the reactor could’ve been used as a weapon.
That changes.
As a valuable necklace is stolen from a safe owned by Bruce … by a cat burglar called Selina Kyle.
A cat burglar who then sells Bruce’s lifted fingerprints to a Wayne business rival, called John Dagget: a rival who’s hired the terrorist, Bane, to do a lot of dirty work for him.
~~~~~

Hmmm …

Which is actually simplifying the plot by quite a hell of a lot …

The Dark Knight Rises is a rich piece of work: possibly too rich for me, although it is a beautifully made piece of work.   Frankly, I think Nolan and co are incapable of making a bad Batman movie.

Personally, though … ?

Personally, I have to admit, I found this a stunner, but not as much of a stunner as The Dark Knight, although that could be just well be Heath Ledger’s death leaving its mark.

Whatever …

I’ll leaves you seeing stars …

Bronson: Blood, Guts and serious aggro

You know, I've got to admit that every-so-often, it's nice to have a change of operating system.

Just very occasionally, I should add.

Which is why I thought I should tell you about the film I managed to catch, last, on the family desktop, that's running Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.

I wouldn't get too excited, though: it's going back home on Sunday!

At any rate ... ?

At any rate, let's get moving on, shall we ... ?

~~~
And let me tell you that I had something of the night to myself.
But I did have the company of a certain Mr Charles Bronson.
Or, at least, the movie about him.
And BEFORE I confuse my overseas readers, I'm talking, here about the 2009 Nicholas Winding Refn directed movie, Bronson: all about Charles Bronson, the man described as Britain's most violent prisoner.
Bronson sees Tom Hardy - who I'd last seen in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy - as the film's (real-world) central character, Micheal Peterson: a man who changes his name to that of the movie star to follow a career in bare-knuckle boxing.
Only to have this interrupted, when, after robbing a post-office of just over £26, being sentenced to 7 years in prison.
Ending up serving quite a bit longer, as a result of being - as he, himself puts it - somebody nobody want's to f*ck with.
~~~

Now ...

Am I going to tell you this is a good film ... ?

You BET I am.

While I can't tell you if Hardy's portrayal of Bronson is in any way true to life, I AM certain his performance as the main character is one of the most riveting thing I've seen on a DVD in years.

On top of that ... ?

On top of that, there's ALSO the fact that Refn's direction and framing of shots - as with the other film of his I've seen, Valhalla Rising - is absolutely amazing.

The combination of the two make Bronson a violent, but worthwhile watch.

Enjoy it, when you get it ... !
