Memory: The Origins of Alien — A Review

8th September, 2019.

Yes: it’s a Sunday night off.

A night off at the ned of a day where …

Where …

Well, I’ve not actually done much: bar had dinner at my family’s.

Apparently?

My nephew, Jude, wants to bring his friend Archie, over to mine.

Making videos seem to have caught someone’s attention.

I’m not sure how I feel about that, though.

Babysitting my nephew’s one thing.

Looking after someone else kid, as well … ?

Well …

That’s another matter …

At any rate … ?

At any rate?

A night off … ?

Means watching something on telly.

Or, at least, catching something on the AppleTV.

And, although I’ve plenty of choice, at the moment … ?

I felt that a documentary could be the thing.

Given this week saw the fortieth anniversary of the UK release of Alien?

I felt watching the documentary about it — Memory: The Origins of Alien — would be an idea …

Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, Memory: The Origins of Alien advertised as the untold story behind Alien.

Focusing on the work of the film’s script writer, the late Dan O’Bannon, it follows O’Bannon effort to write a really scary scoff horror.

Showing us the route from the script stage, to his meetings with H. R. Giger, the designer who created the alien, itself, and Ridley Scott: the man who went on to direct the piece.

Then shifts focus to Scott’s making of the movie.

Along side this?

It features interviews with two of the cast: Tom Skerritt (Captain Dallas) and Veronica Cartwright (Lambert).

And with various academics, and members of the production crew.

The question I have to ask … ?

Is whether Memory: The Origins of Alien is any good.

Right at the moment … ?

I’m thinking it’s good …

ish …

The few exterior scenes are beautifully show lit, and processed.

The assorted talking heads?

Well chosen and vocal.

For me, though?

Memory: The Origins of Alien is a little disappointing.

As nice as it is to see … ?

It’s not telling me anything I didn’t know.
