Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 22nd September, 2019

22nd September, 2019 Teaser.

I think I’m right in today’s intro: I’m going to need to have words with my family.

Christmas is looming: and I’m still — still — mulling over a family present.

I’m thinking a Chromecast — or Roku/Firestick — would be an idea: as my family could stream stuff to them from assorted phones and tablets.

Oh, and cheap.

Something like a laptop?   And some recent Android media streamers?

Are a touch more expensive, and can’t — from what I can see — be streamed to, from a phone or tablet without a lot of faffing about.

But can be set up with individual user accounts: oh, and parental controls.

Something my youngest sister, Ruth would appreciate: when setting up an account for Jude, my eight year old nephew.

It’s …

Well, yes: you can see why I’m thinking talking is a good idea …

But if you have any thoughts, yourself … ?

Feel free to mention them … !

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, and Debbi† putting in their answers: with all three scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) The UK’s oldest continuously operating cinema — the Duke of York’s Picture House — opened on 22nd September, 1910.   Which English city is the Picture House in?
Q2) A ‘double flash’ took place on 22nd September, 1979: near the Prince Edward Islands.   The flash is thought to be what: a nuclear test, an exploding whale, or an oil rig fire?
Q3) 22nd September is the feast day of Saint Maurice.   He’s a patron saint of where: Austria, Australia or Abyssinia?
Q4) ITV, the UK’s first commercial TV station, started broadcasts on 22nd September, 1955.   The first ad the station aired was for what: cheese, toothpaste or moisturiser?
Q5) Gene Tunney won the controversial Long Count boxing match: on 22nd September, 1927.   Who did he beat?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 21st September is mentioned in the 1978 song, September.   Who recorded September?
A1) Earth Wind and Fire.   Have a video …
Q2) In Western Churches, 21st September is the feast day of Saint Matthew the Apostle.   Matthew is one of the four evangelists.   Name one of the other three.
A2) Mark, Luke or John.
Q3) 21st September is Independence Day in Belize.   What’s the capital city of Belize?
A3) Belmopan.
Q4) 21st September is Independence Day in Armenia.   Marking Armenia’s independence from where?
A4) The Soviet Union.
Q5) Finally … ?   Bhutan joined the UN on 21st September, 1971.   Is Bhutan a republic, monarchy or theocracy.
A5) A monarchy.   (Its current Druk Gyalpo, or Dragon King, is King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.)
Here’s a thought …
“The question of whether particular goals are achievable by specified means (or indeed by any means at all) is an elementary and unavoidable question about any theory of justice.”
William H. Riker.   September 22, 1920 – June 26, 1993.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        The unfortunate thing, Olga?   Turns out Annoyed Dad was a Labour activist: which sort of poisoned the well, for some.   It turned the story from “Annoyed Dad confronts PM,” to “Labour Activist confronts Tory PM.”   At ANY rate … ?   I know what you mean about the weather: we’re looking at the same thing.   And it was such a nice day, yesterday!

†        Well, it does come in handy, yes!   Actually, Debbi, did I mention I was reading Odd John?   It’s a riveting read: and inspired the term Homo Superior.

Q1) Brighton! (I’ve been there quite a few times and it’s an institution. A great place. I remember seeing Michael Moore there come and talk about his movies).
Q2) A nuclear test
Q3) Austria
Q4) toothpaste
Q5) Jack Dempsey
Yes, I saw that about annoyed Dad, although I think I read a member of staff from the hospital (perhaps a doctor, I can't remember) confirmed the man was right. Here the weather cleared out later, thankfully, as they were doing la festa del fitness (the party of fitness) this morning here, free, and I had registered for it, and it was open air. It was sunny, and a bit too hot for it, but well, you can't have everything! Keep us posted on the present's front (I think the Fire Stick could be set with parental control, but I'm not sure if that only applied to the Amazon contents... I suspect that would be the case for most things though. But then if the laptop or tablet also has parental control set up, it probably shouldn't be a problem. By the way, I still have my Fire Stick that is not the right model for here, and now with the smart TV it doesn't matter anyway. I'd offer to send it to you, but I suspect there might be newer models come out by now...). But if you want it, let me know. I'm sure I can find it and it isn't very heavy, so it shouldn't cost too much to send it.

Now that sounds like an interesting book!

Speaking of interesting books, I'm reading Harlan Ellison's book with that short story about the Ticktockman. Whew! The guy wrote like he was on LSD, I'm telling you. Wordy, yes. Enthralling still? Yes! :)

1. Brighton
2. a nuclear test (at least, unofficially?)
3. Austria
4. toothpaste
5. Jack Dempsey
