Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 4-9-2024 — El Lay
4th September, 2024: El Lay.
It’s officially Wednesday … which frankly …
Means I’ve got the day free, having finished rendering a lot of videos!
I might just have to watch some TV in between everything else!
~≈¥≈~
As I’ve started writing this … ?
I’ve got the Todayprogramme, Radio Four’s early morning current affairs programme, on in the background.
Do you remember hearing the news about the Grenfell Tower fire, back in 2017?
I certainly do: seeing the images of a burning tower block was one of the most shocking things I think I’d ever seen in my life.
Even now, it’s distressing to see.
What was shocking for me … ?
Was the fact I had a (thankfully) distant connection to it.
I worked for Pinnacle, at the time: the company handled out of hours emergency repair calls for various social landlords, including Kensington and Chelsea Council, the owners of Grenfell Tower*.
I knew the young woman who was on duty, that night: who handled the horde of emergency housing requests that started coming in.
Q1)Los Angeles was founded on 4th September as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula. 4th September of which year: 1780, 1781 or 1782?
Q2)The Pueblo is now Los Angeles. It’s also known as the City of what: angels, apostrophes or oysters?
Q3)The city is in which US state: Alabama, California or Florida?
Q4)The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is in Los Angeles. It’s which denomination of Church: Anglican, Roman Catholic or Greek Orthodox?
Q5)Finally … ? Los Angeles is going to host the 34th Summer Olympics. When: 2024, 2028 or 2032?
Q5)Finally … ? The man in charge of a Merchant Navy ship is the ship’s … what?
A5)Ship’s Captain. (I should that — as far as I can tell — the term ‘captain’ is the preferred one: but the Wikipedia entries use it interchangeably with ‘master’.)
Here’s a thought …
“The entrance to the Underworld is in Los Angeles.”
* What made me realise that Grenfell was one of the buildings Pinnacle handled? Was news that the nearby Trellick Tower had had a fire in one flat, a few months earlier, that Trellick was owned by the same council. I recognised the name, ‘Trellick’, as ‘one of ours’, one of the ones Pinnacle had to handle
What stopped the Trellick Tower fire spreading? Was the fact it was a listed building: and had none of the inflammable cladding that contributed to the Grenfell fire.
† Hello, Mum!
‡ You’re right, Olga¶: art and its creators, is one of those complicated issues. And I’ve long since got used to the idea of separating the two. Some of Michael Jackson’s work is pop genius, even if he, personally, had an iffy reputation.
That said … ? The recent revelations about Martin Bashir’s interview with Diana does make you wonder about his interview with Jackson.
And I guess in your shoes … ? I’d be livid about the David Mamet piece not getting issued!
§ ‘And here we go’? Debbi, we’ve got your next Halloween costume!
¶ Olga, did you know Terry Pratchett was supposed to be Britain’s most lifted author? I can understand that: the Harry Potter books are the size of breeze blocks.
‖ Given today’s subject? We’re allowed to use Valley Speak at people. “Oh, my GOD!” “Gag me with a SPOON!!!!” “BARF me OUT!!!!!!!!!”
Q5) 2028 You're right about Harry Potter's books, indeed. And I agree about Michael Jackson (and Wagner, I guess. Love his music, but he wasn't a very nice man, it seems, and the use of his music the Nazis made has given it a more complicated reputation). Well, I wasn't pleased, to say the least. Thankfully, I was away with my friend in Alexandria when this was announced (the no publication of the book), so I was pretty busy doing other things. The editors offered us first pic to collaborate on the next book they published, the problem being that, although I quite like the director they were going to talk about, I had never done any research, and not being in academia at the moment, getting hold of materials (especially here. It wasn't always easy in the UK to find materials about US directors or playwrights, but there were ways if you had enough time and you were working with a university library) would have taken me forever. You really need to have some idea of what you want to do and some previous knowledge before submitting the proposal, and just doing that research would have taken me a lot of time and money, so... I didn't try. The beauty about the Mamet book is that I had done a lot of research and had a lot of materials already. Susana, the Portuguese friend who came to visit with her family a while back was the one who spotted the call for papers and told me about it. She and her husband (who also teaches at university, although he is a Mathematician) were outraged about it when I told them. Not being in academia, it didn't affect my ratings or anything like that, but people teaching depend on publications for their jobs, and something like that would have had a much worse impact than it did for me. Still, it was a lot of time and effort dedicated to it. Oh, well...

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
