Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 9-7-2020: Freddie Jones

9th July, 2020.

Yep: it’s a definite.

I’ve got Radio 4 on.

“And … ?” I hear you ask …

The Today programme is discussing Brexit … and, of course, Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s plan to give businesses a £1000 bonus … for each furloughed worker they’s retained by January, 2021.

Which is a good move.

But … ?

Well, I can see the big flaw, from over here.

It give businesses an incentive to retain furloughed staff.

But no incentives to hire someone like me.

It’s probably going to win Mr Sunak some votes.

It won’t give him mine.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Trevor*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with all three scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 9th July, 2019, saw the death of actor, Freddie Jones.   He was born in which year?
Q1) In which film did he play Thufir Hawat?
Q3) The film in Q2 was directed by the director of 1980’s The Elephant Man: a film Jones also appeared in.   Who was that director?
Q4) In which children’s series did he play Dai the Poacher?
Q5) Finally … ?   His last TV role was in which UK soap … ?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) The first test — or International — match between the Australian Wallabies and the South African Springboks was played on 8th July, 1933.   What were they playing: Association Football, Rugby Union, Rugby League or American Football?
Q2) 8th July, 1968, saw the birth of actor, Billy Crudup.   Who did he play, in the film, Watchmen?
A2) Dr Jon Osterman: also known as Dr Manhatten.
Q3) 8th July, 1934, saw the birth of actor and comedian, Marty Feldman.   He final film role was as Gilbert: in which 1983 movie?
Q4) Ronnie Biggs escaped from HMP Wandsworth: on 8th July, 1965.   When were the gallows at HMP Wandsworth’s dismantled?
A4) 1994: some thirty three years after the last executions …
Q5) Finally?   8th July, 1497, saw Vasco da Gama begin the world’s first ocean voyage from Europe … to where?
A5) India.
Here’s a thought …
“My life springs from my wife, my family, my work and my whisky.”
Freddie Jones.
And a video …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Trevor, you can’t go wearing Debbi in this weather, she’ll get drenched … !   I have to admit, I knew there’s issues with Wikipedia’s timelines: I always try and mention them on the talk pages, where I can.   (The online version of Encyclopædia Britannica is even less help: it has an article Wandsworth, which only mentions the prison, once.)

†        I know exactly what you mean, Olga!   Mobiles would be a fantastic way of keeping in touch … if it wasn’t for the fact they let you keep in touch!
And, yes: Xiaomi do have a good reputation.   Not that I’ve seen them in the shops, much, but there we go!   Going by what I’ve seen?   O2 — Telefónica, in other words — must have a deal with Huawei: they seem to have a lot of their handsets going on offer, and nothing from Xiaomi!
(I’ve just had a poke around.   Apple are charging £419 for a 64gb iPhone SE.   Which is cheap for Apple.   O2 aren’t saying how much they’re charging.   I’ve got a funny feeling O2 will be charging double … )

‡        I know what you mean, Debbi!   My reading pile still isn’t reducing … !   Oooh … !   I’ve put you and Olga’s channel’s in today’s Teaser video.   I’d’ve plonked you in a TV review.   But I don’t know when the next will be, as I’m still working on the Digital Poverty thing for Phoenix FM!   It’s taking its time!   How Bernstein and Woodward worked so fast, I’ll never know!   Oh, before I forget, Debbi?   Happy Birthday … !

Thanks, Paul! Here there are actual Xiaomi shops around (one in a mall nearby), and you can find their phones in most mobile shops. I’ve seen an ad today for their Xiaomi Redmi note 8 (128G) for under 200 euros (somewhere else for 170). I might have a look if the battery doesn’t work, although I think it is quite big… Or perhaps another model. If the battery doesn’t work I’ll investigate further. Here it does quite well, and their electric scooters also sell very well (they are a nightmare if you’re on foot, though, but my cousin has one and he found it handy to go to work).

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
