Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 25th May, 2018

25th May, 2018.

Yes: I had a day off, yesterday.

And frankly?

It’s one I spent in Brentwood Theatre, would you believe?   Watching my kid sister, Ruth — Jude’s Mum, in other words — in the chorus of the Brentwood Operatic Society’s production of Spamalot, would you believe?

Rather entertaining, that.

And also positive proof that at least one member of the family knows how to overact with a fish* … !

Just as a complete sidestep, here?

Have you been watching Humans, on Channel Four?

It’s a fascinating little series, now on it’s third season: and one I record religiously, to watch back later.

My only complaint?

Is literally that I have to record it.

Rather than watch it on my Apple TV.

In theory?   If I had an iPad, I could download the Channel Four Catchup app, and stream the show over to the Apple TV.

Problem solved.

Except I don’t actually have an iPad.

If the show were on the BBC, ITV or Channel Five, it wouldn’t be an issue: they all have catchup apps for the Apple TV.

A lot of the main UK TV services do.

Except Channel Four.

It’s frustrating, annoying, deeply disappointing …

And, these days?

Something that puts me off watching Channel Four’s output.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with both scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 25th May, 2018, sees the Republic of Ireland vote on the Eighth Amendment to the Irish constitution.   The Amendment bans what?
Q2) 25th May, 1979, saw the price of what go up, in the UK: petrol, domestic gas or milk?
Q3) The first commercial space craft to dock at the International Space Station, did so on 25th May, 2012.   That craft — a reusable Dragon module — was owned and launched by which company: Virgin Galactic, SpaceX or the British Rocketry Group?
Q4) 25th May. 1958, saw the birth of singer, Paul Weller.   Name either of the bands he was frontman for.
Q5) Finally … 25th May, 1963, saw the birth of actor and comedian, Mike Myers.   In which British children’s show did he present a segment called the ‘Sound Asleep Club’?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 24th May saw the birth of Queen Victoria.   In which year of the 1810s?
A1) 1819.
Q2) In which year was she named as Queen of the UK?
A2) 1837.
Q3) Her coronation as Queen of the UK was in which year?
A3) 1838.
Q4) Who was her predecessor as UK monarch?
Q5) Here father, Prince Edward, was Duke of which English county?
A5) Kent.
Q6) Her mother was Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld.   The three towns, and the Duchy, are in which modern country?
A6) Germany.
Q7) How many children did Victoria have: eight, nine or ten?
A7) Nine.
Q8) More to the point, who was her husband?
A8) Prince Albert.
Q9) In which year was she named as Empress of India?
A9) 1876.
Q10) Finally … Victoria was the last monarch of which Royal House … ?
A10) Hanover.
Here’s a thought …
“I like smart jokes, I like dumb jokes, and I like dumb jokes done smartly.”
Mike Myers, born 25th May, 1963ª.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Disappointingly?   No-one mentioned how silly it got …

†        Funny you should mention that, Olga^.   You’ve heard of Sod’s Law?   Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong?   One of the versions I heard was ‘Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong … at the worst possible moment.’   Although, by the sound of it, the Núñez Miret version would read ‘Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong … when it really shouldn’t … ’

‡        I fully intend to not panic, Debbi^!   One of these day’s, though?   I’ll have to do a Teaser about Terry Pratchett’s Night Watch, set on and around the 25th May.   (Arguably?   It, and Nation, are his best books … )

^        Oh, strictly?   Just Kent would’ve done: the Strathearn bit of his title’s on Scotland.

ª        Where that leaves smart jokes, done dumbly, I don’t know.

Yes, there are plenty of versions. Spamalot is great fun. I watched it in Sheffield years back although there's an amateur version (I'm sure translated, although I'm not sure if into Spanish or Catalan) being shown in the neighbourhood in the next few days. I watched the first series of Humans as I happened to be in the UK at the time, but I I lost track of it. I'm not sure if it has shown here.
