Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18-5-2025 — The Protectorate of Tonga

18th May, 2025: the Protectorate of Tonga.

Right … I’ve officially made a mess of a video!

At some point, today, this video is going to get taken down …

Because … ?

I made a hash of the audio … !

I’m currently rebuilding it: hopefully, that won’t affect the viewing figures.

But … ?

That’s what happens when you do late night video editing … when so knackered you don’t double check things!

Arrrggghhh!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th May 2024

18th May, 2024.

Right then … it’s Saturday …

And … ?

Frankly, the next episode of Doctor Who’s on, tonight.

The Steven Moffat penned episode, “Boom”.

I have to confess: that landmine Ncuti Gatwa’s standing on, looks familiar!

~≈💣≈~

Familiar or otherwise?

I’ll be doing a re view of the episode: which will hopefully go live, tomorrow.

My most recent Star Trek Discovery review?

Went live, yesterday.

I hope it does well!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th May 2023.

18th May, 2023.

Yes: it’s officially official …

I’ve finished filling in the online form.

I’m on benefits, so you know.

And frankly?

Managing money as well as I can.

Every saving counts: and every little helps.

But … ?

Every little helps.

Or extra help, helps, I should say.

So?

I’ve applied for what’s called Personal Independence Payments, or PIP: that provides extra help if you have certain conditions.

The ‘Submit’ button got pressed, yesterday.

Hopefully … ?

That’ll come up with something …

~≈É≈~

As an extra thought … ?

I had this piece from NottinghamshireLive float across my phone’s time line, a couple of days before hitting the button.

A piece that informs its reader of a list of conditions that should make you eligible for PIP.

The list includes the phrase ‘endocrine diseases’: things like underachieve thyroid glands, and type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

I’ve got an underactive thyroid: and type two diabetes.

Those facts — and the piece — were something I felt I had to mention in the form.

Whether that does any thing?

Is a whole other matter.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th May, 2022

18th May, 2022.

Right …

I’m thinking goulash for dinner, tonight.

And managed to get most of what I needed, yesterday.

Apart from a pepper!

One single, solitary pepper!

There’s always something!

Did you know the government have offered people like me — in homes in Council Tax bands A to D — a £150 cash rebate: to help with their council tax bills.

For many who pay by direct debit, the rebate has gone through automatically.

Those of us who don’t?   Have to fill in an online form*.

I filled mine in, a couple of weeks ago: expecting something of an instant result.

It didn’t turn up with in the short time I was expecting: so I went to the local council offices to ask about it.

Apparently?   It could turn up anywhere between now … and September.

It seems I’m not the only one facing issues.

According to a charity called National Energy Action, many in my shoes are also facing delays.

Frankly?

I’m not surprised.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18-5-2021: Nicholas 2nd

18th May, 2021.

Oy veh!

Would you believer that the Zoom interview I was due to have yesterday?

Has had to be re-scheduled.

The thunderstorm in Romford, where the company is … ?

Caused the signal to collapse … !

Oy veh … !

A few days ago, I told you I’d written to my MP: about photo ID.

I got a formal written reply from my local MP, Alex Burghart, on Monday.

If you can’t make that out, here’s what he said.
Dear Mr Downie

Thank you for contacting me about voter ID

A secure electoral system is a vital component of a health democracy, and the public must have confidence that our elections are secure and fit for the 21st Century.   Asking voters to bring ID to their polling station is an important way of achieving this and the electoral Integrity Bill will put such a requirement into law.

Voter ID is not new.   Northern Ireland had required paper ID at polling stations since 1985, and photo ID since 2003 — introduced by the last Labour Government.   It has been proved to be effective at tackling fraud and not curtailed election turnout.

Identification to vote has been backed by the Electoral Commission and international elections watchdogs.   At present, it is harder to take out a library book or collect a parcel at a post office than it is to vote in someone else’s name.

In pilot schemes in 2019 and 2018, the overwhelming majority go people cast their vote without a problem and the success of the pilots proves that this is a reasonable and proportionate measure to take, and that there was no notable effect on turnout.

Under the Government’s proposals, anyone without an ID will be able to apply for a new free one — meaning that no voter, including those, like you, on Universal Credit, will be disenfranchised as you have suggested.

Thank you again, for taking the time to contact me to share your concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Burghart, MP.
You’ll notice he stresses the ‘free voter ID’?

I certainly did.

As did a friend of mine: who also sent a letter to her MP, Julia Lopez MP … and who got an identically worded reply, courtesy of Ms Lopez’s constituency assistant.

I sent a reply to Alex Burghart.
Dear Mr Burghart.

First things, I’d like to take this chance to thank you for explaining the Electoral Integrity Bill to me: I appreciate this takes up a lot of your valuable time.

I did, however, want to raise a couple of follow up points with you.

I’d like to quibble the ease of applying for a library ticket or pick up a parcel with you.

The last time I need to apply for a Library card, I only needed a couple of letters with my address on them.

The last parcel I need to pick up from the Post Office?

I only needed my bank card, and the card left by the postman.

Could you explain the current ID needed for proxy voting: I’m unfamiliar with it.

But if proxy voting is truly easier then collecting a parcel?

Why not insist on photo ID just for those casting a proxy vote?

Secondly?   In the 2019 and 2018 pilot schemes, how did those of us with no ID, identify themselves?

Thirdly, and finally … ?

I have to admit, I knew about the proposed ‘Free Photo ID cards.’   The media coverage does mention it.

That ‘free voter ID’ is where, again, I have concerns about costs.

In order to claim this free voter ID, I’m assuming I would need to provide a passport sized photo: is that correct?

And would need a letter as proof of address, and possibly a birth certificate.

Replacement birth certificates, if needed, will cost money: some thirty-five pounds, going by the relevant site.

Passport ID photos would also cost money.

I have to ask, Mr Burghart, how am I supposed to afford that free voter ID: if I can’t afford the documents needed to apply for it?

As well intentioned as this bill is, it still seems I have to buy my right to vote.

Yours,
I would LOVE to get a reply off the man, I really would.

I suspect I won’t.

Which is a shame: I’d love to hear his reply.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th May, 2020.

18th May, 2020.

Yes: I think I can say two things.

One … ?   I’ve had a late night, last night.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels really is looking good, and helping my very numbers on YouTube.

Two … ?

I seem to have a sudden thing about toast* …

Yeah …

Toast …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18-5-2019: International Museum Day.

18th May, 2019.

I am officially … tired: after something of a late night.

Yep: I was up, last night, watching a movie: the Nicolas Cage vehicle that was Mandy.

That’s … definitely a film worth watching.

Although, to be honest?

I gave it two stars for a reason.

The filters used to show you the characters were having a bad LSD ex[erience Were a little overwhelming,  as far as I was concerned.

~≈§≈~

All that … ?

All that, and I’m due to see a show, tonight …

My kid sister, Ruth?

Is in an amateur version of Our House.

Quite what that’s going to be like, I don’t know!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th May, 2018.

18th May, 2018.

Yep: you’re right …

I’m really wanting to go back to bed.

Frankly?   I’m looking forward to Sunday: that’s my next day off!

~≈§≈~

Just as a point … ?

The Today programme tells me that the government’s considering sending more troops to Afghanistan — at the request of NATO and the US government — in order to help train Afghan troops.

Personally … ?

OK, it’s a bit early in the morning to get heavily political.

But I don’t like it.

Partly because the request’s come from the US government.   We’re leaving the EU, and someone’s STILL happy about outside interference in UK decisions?

But also … ?

Because of cost.

I know we’re making cuts in military spending at a time of theoretical austerity: spending money on assigning troops somewhere≤ seems daft …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18-4-2017: Hooray for Bollywood

Oh, handy …

I’ve — in the wake of having a quiet week, this week? — been hitting the boxed sets: catching up with the second season of Mr Robot.

Which is looking as good as the first one, I should add.

What I didn’t know until yesterday?

Was that VideoLan, the makers of open source media player, vlc, had release a version of the player for the AppleTV.

Well, if you going to watch a TV show about a hacker, watching it on the open source video player only seems polite.

It’s …

Actually, it’s not too bad.   The picture quality, player the same files, seems better with the AppleTV’s native software.   And you have to jump through a couple more hoops — you connect the software on the AppleTV to a remote control page, in a web browser, and drag and top the files in to the browser page — than you do, using iTunes.

But it’s not a bad process to use: and offers the chance of playing all sorts of formats on my favourite streaming box.

So I’m happy.

The Brentwood Gazette’s Weekly Teaser — 18-5-2016: Hooray for Bollywood

I Am A Camera
For once … ?

For once, I’m not actually rushed.

No, really!

I’m not actually putting up this week’s Weekly Teaser in a hurry: as I’ve got today off.

Still … ?

I’m planning on heading for Brentwood High Street.

As I left my back-pack at work, yesterday!

D’Oh … !
