The Golem: How He Came into the World/Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam: A Review

20th March, 2019.

OK … OK …

For those of you who watched the intro video … ?

I’m still — still — craving chocolate.

But?

Right here and now, I can say three things.

One … ?

I’ve got coco!

Drinking chocolate, in other words!

Two … ?

I THINK I’ve got that Max Headroom effect as well as I can.

At least, with a copy of iMovie … !

Three … ?

I’ve actually managed to pick out a movie …

You’ve possibly worked out WHICH movie, have’t you …

You’re right.

The famously lost, found and refunded, Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam: The Golem: How He Came into the World.

It’s … interesting …

The Call of Cthulhu — A Review: Hello, Retro

23rd July, 2018.

OK, that’s the intro video done with.

Leaving me with something of a a conundrum.

Do I take five, or ten, minutes … to jump into the shower?

Actually?

It’s not a conundrum, at all.

I’ve just jumped in the shower.

Frankly, with a figure like mine, and on the hottest day of the year, a day when the Met Office has released an Amber Alert?

Washing off the sweat, makes sense.

Either way?

Can you blame a body for getting overheated?

I don’t think you can, to be blunt.

Especially not on a day like this.

Frankly?

It’s enough to make you stay in, it really is.

The only thing with that, of course?

Is having something to watch

Frankly, I did.

The 2005 film that is …

The Call Of Cthulhu.

And, even this long after reading the original HP Lovecraft short story?

I stil don’t know how to pronounce Cthulhu … !

Nosferatu, or Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922): A Review

8th March, 2017.

You know, right now?

Right now, I think I’m getting old …

No … I know I’m getting old.

It was my birthday, Saturday, just gone.

If you want to mark it by doing something tacky, like giving me money?

Please do!

At any rate … ?

My simple point, here, is it’s getting late: and I’m not as young as I was.

But I did want to register a minor point.

That I’ve finally managed to see a movie I’ve been interesting in, for a while.

Yes, you guessed it …

The 1922, silent German horror film that is …

Nosferatu … !

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari: or Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari.

16th February, 2017.

Have you ever heard of an actor called Conrad Veidt?

German chap, so you know.

Who’d done well for himself in German cinema and theatre: until he fled Germany before World War 2, as his wife was Jewish.

I had: but, in all honesty, couldn’t claim to have seen a film he’s in.

Oh, I know he crops up in Casablanca.

I’ve not actually seen it, though: yes, I know that’s possibly a hanging offence.

But there you go.

Sue me … !

At any rate?

At any rate, and just to re-iterate?

I’ve never actually seen a film with Conrad Veidt in it.

Not for lack of interest, either: more a lack of time, money …

And possibly motivation, as well.

Tonight, though?

Tonight, though, I had a night off.

A desire to see a film.

And a copy of a film — with Conrad Veidt in a key role — that I’d been interested in for some time.

The film … ?

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari: or Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari, in the original German.

I wanted to catch it, not because Veidt’s appeared in the key role of Cesare.

But because the film has something of a reputation …

Metropolis: Head, Heart and Hands …

6th February, 2013

There comes a point when — literally —  you have to sit down with a classic or two.

I’ve always prided myself on being something of a science fiction fan, so for me, that means sitting down with a vintage classic or two.

Including — back in the late 1970s, when it was re-shown at my local cinema, post-Star Wars2001: A Space Odyssey.

That’s an experience, I should add.   Catching Kubrick’s work on the big screen is something of a delight: which ever one of his films you see.

2001 is pretty good.   Watching it on a TV — however hi-definition/widescreen that TV is — isn’t quite the same.

But I was saying about classics, wasn’t I … ?   Yes, I was …

You see, there’s a school of thought that says — every-so-often — you should make a point of seeing those films that generally feature on bucket* lists: in other words, they’re the sort of film to see before you die.

God alone knows how many of those there are.   I’m willing to bet that if you ask one hundred people for the title of just one such film … you’ll get about three hundred suggestions.

It possibly gets easier if you narrow things down by specifying a genre.   Even then, you’ll, probably still get an argument.

Especially if the genre in question is something like science fiction: complete with Star Wars at one end, Bladerunner at another, and — keep with me — Star Trek at a third end.   Oh, and the original Russian version of Solaris, along with 2001: A Space Odyssey forming a fourth and fifth end to a multidimensional stick.

Things like Weird Science floating around, give people tension headaches.

The less said the better, there, I think.

At any rate … ?   I managed to rent one of those films that’s been seen as a classic.

If not a classic: then certainly genre defining.

The 1927, Fritz Lang film, Metropolis.

Let me try and explain, shall I … ?
