Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1st May, 2018.

1st May, 2018.

Yep: it’s definitive …

I’ve had a … drive by attempt!

I was actually doing some writing, yesterday: doing the basics for an up coming ten question set.

And?

Innocently Googled something: barracks, I seem to recall.

And got the pictured page as a result.

Before you ask … ?   I didn’t click a thing.

I was suspicious.

Partly because the page looked slightly wrong: the colouring, in particular, looked … iffy.

Partly … ?   The good ol’ thing that macOS generally doesn’t have as much malicious software as Windows: or even Linux.   Having a website — even one claiming to be an Apple authored one — saying I had malicious software on my Mac struck me as … odd.

The few remote virus scanning sites I’d used, only do so … when I’ve gone to them.

And partly?   Because of the URL that showed up in the bar at the top of the page.

It looked nothing like an Apple authored web address I’d ever seen.

I navigated away from it, after taking a screen shot.

And looked up what happened.

Apparently?   That little event was an attempt at what’s called a drive by download.   If you click on any links or buttons on there?   You get hit with issues.

If I’d clicked on that scan button?

Well …

Let’s just say I’m grateful I didn’t …

The Brentwood Gazette’s Weeky Teaser — 29-7-2015: Boy Scouts Out Camping.

Oh, well that’s official, then.

It looks like Windows 10 has its official release: today.

And my cynical side … ?   Is noting that whole ‘free’ aspect: Mac fan that I am, my first thought is that MS are copying Apple, who’ve been giving away the current version of  OS X for about five years, at a guess.

AND taking a leaf out of the open source movement’s book.   Every shade of Linux has been handed out of the asking for even longer.

By the sounds of it, though … ?  Microsoft, under its new CEO, Satya Nadella, seems to be trying something new.

Going for hardware sales, á la Apple, with the various shades of Xbox.   And going for offering the Windows 10 for free: with highly pricey technical support, á la Canonical: who’ve been doing the same with Ubuntu for about a decade, at least.

Good luck to them.

But personally?

Either my next computer’s a Mac … or I’m getting an iPad … !

The Daily Teaser — 22-1-2015: Introducing Macintosh

Drat … !

Drat, I slept through my alarm, again … !

Which is awkward, as I’m working, today.

Frankly, though … ?   Frankly, I’m starting to suspect there’s something mildly wrong with the alarm clock I use.

Seemingly, I can’t reset it, that easily.

Oy heh … !

In The Mouth Of Madness: That’s An Experience … !

In The Mouth Of Madness
5th January, 2015.

Hmmm …

That’s … frustrating …

I’ve been watching a movie, tonight: and patient letting my computer back up to an internal hard drive.

Which — for some reason — is now, suddenly full!

Oh, at least, not backing up, as Time Machine suddenly need more space than it used to, under Snow Leopard.

Money being what it is … ?

I can’t actually afford the £60 to buy a new internal drive of the size my machines telling me it needs.

It’s FRUSTRATING!

Especially when you consider I HAD the money …

And had to spend it on the extra drive — and the associated carrier — in the first place … !

Effectively, if you’ve got £60 you can spare … ?   I’d LOVE to hear from you … !

That’s if moving my iPhoto library doesn’t work*!

The Daily Teaser — 26-12-2014

You know, I think I had a very good Christmas Day, in case you’re curious: I’m just helping yours went as well.

Personally … ?

Bless ’em, my family picked me up all sorts of things for me: including a Mac compatible external optical drive, capable of reading of reading Blu-ray discs.

The Daily Teaser — 1-11-2014

Oh, now that looks like it could be interesting …

You’ve possibly worked out — by now — I’m a Dr Who fan.

Hadn’t you … ?

I hope so … !

At any rate, we’re getting towards the final episode of the 2014 season — series 8, if you’re wondering — and I have to say: it’s looking good.

I’ve got one question, though.

And it’s the same one everyone else has got.

Frankly … ?

Well, frankly, I think that’s only going to get answered when we see the cliff-hanger.

And that’s only going to happen tonight: at the earliest.

But let’s move on, shall we?   Before we get distracted … !

The Daily Teaser — 11-6-2013: In AUSTRALIA … !

Well, FINALLY … !

It looks like Apple’s finally managed to announce its updated MacBook Air — which I frankly wouldn’t say no to, in case anyone’s got some spare cash for an enthusiastically hard working blogger* — and its MacPro tower.

Which Apple† are saying is it will be it’s fastest ever product: but we’ll have to wait and see, I think.

Although, personally … ?

I’m not saying no to one of THOSE, either … !   Welcome to the Cult of Mac.

Ahem … !

‹‹~››

Moving on, yesterday’s Teaser: along with admitting she’s thinking of buying a Mac‡, she also bagged six out of six.

Let’s see how she — and you — do with todays questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video …

Q1) 11th June, 1770, saw Captain Cook run aground: on which Australian landmark … ?
Q2) More to the point, off the coast of which Australian state … ?
Q3) Name any of the other seven Australian states …
Q4) What’s the landmark made of … ?
Q5) In what year was it declared a World Heritage Landmark: 1981, 1983 or 1985 … ?
Q6) Finally … What naval rank did Cook hold, during this expedition … ?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 10th June, 1935 makes the founding of AA, when one founder had his last drink.   Name either of the founder members.
A1) Dr Robert Smith or stockbroker, Bill Wilson.
Q2) More to the point, what does AA stand for … ?
A2) Alcoholics Anonymous.
Q3) In which US city was it founded … ?
A3) Akron, Ohio.
Q4) How many steps does AA famously have … ?
A4) 12.
Q5) What’s the name of the second such self help group to be founded, back in 1953 … ?
A5) NA: or Narcotics Anonymous.
Q6) Finally … what’s the title of AA’s Big Book … ?
A6) Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism.
I’ll leave you with this thought from Captain JAmes Cook, himself …
“Ambition leads me not only farther than any other man has been before me, but as far as I think it possible for man to go”
Captain James Cook.
Although I suspect I suspect that, on actually running aground, his words were simpler: “Oh, BLAST!”

I’ll ALSO leave you with THIS tune: although what @BudgetDude will make of this, I really couldn’t tell you … !

Have a good day … !

*        That’s what we call a Big Hint, just in case the Money Fairy’s listening!

†        As I recall … ?   At the time of the second generation’s release, Apple made a big of one fact: that the stock machine — with none of the build to order options — was the fastest thing capable of running Windows on the market.

‡        You might want to hold on, a month or two, Debbi: along with the various upgrades to some of their product line — we’re in the midst of Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference, which is WHY they’re making the big announcements — they’ve ALSO previewed OS X 10•9 Mavericks, the latest version of the operating system.   Which I wouldn’t mind a look at, to be frank: one feature they’ve apparently introduced to the Finderº, is Tabs.   Which is a VERY handy feature, and should save on screen space!

º        That’s the default OS X File Manager: Windows Explorer, and Nautilus are the default Windows and Linux equivalents.   It’s been used, in one form or another, since System 1.
