Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10-6-2025 — Frances Ethel Gumm

10th June, 2025: Frances Ethel Gumm.

Death … comes to us all …

There’s possibly a lot of directions I could go with that statement.

But I’ll go with the sad route.

Yesterday?

Saw the death of writer, Frederick Forsyth.

I was never a fan of his politics: he was a little too high Tory for my tastes.

But the few books of his I read?

Were well constructed: The Fourth Protocol has been on my bookshelves for many years.

~≈📖≈~

The other death … ?

Was that of influential musician, Sly Stone.

Again, I was never a huge fan.

But?

I suspect the was a Family Stone tune for everyone: something he would’ve written.

The man will be missed.

~≈🎹≈~

The fact, in all this, that the US President has sent the Marines into Los Angeles?

Is less relevant: although it reinforces my personal belief that the current US president is a twerp.

It’s less relevant to my day than the fact I’m expecting a phone, early: a call from a lung-checking NHS service.

Hopefully?

I won’t need a hospital appointment, as a result.

As a last point?

It’s the time of year when Apple holds its World Wide Developers Conference: and makes a slew of announcements.

This year?

They’ve made several announcements, already.

Including an announcement that the next versions of their main operating systems will be macOS/iOS/iPhoneOS/tvOS/watchOS 26: a unified numbering system, in other words.

These will feature a new interface design language.

With lots of glass-like, transparent, elements.

That … ?

Will feature in the upcoming version on macOS — macOS 26 Tahoe — when it’s released later this year.

That version … ?

As well as the new interface, Tahoe will be the last to support Intel Macs.

I can only hope two things.

One?

That Tahoe’s replacement, a replacement that will only support Apple Silicon and presumably remove a lot of Intel code, will use less hard drive space as a result.

Two?

That the whizzy new interface design is readable.

Or, at least, can be turned off in Settings!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10th June, 2024.

10th June, 2024.

Right, then … Mondays!

I almost always have an early start on Mondays.

Because it’s the day of a weight management course I’m on.

Hopefully?

I’ll have lost weight, today.

We’ll have to see.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10-6-2023 — Judy

10th June, 2023: Judy

Right … it’s official.

I’m heading into town, later.

The new medication has turned up at my chemists, so I’m going to head up there, and pick it up.

I think I’m going to wear long sleeves.

My town’s going to be sunny …

Star Trek Discovery — Series 4 Episode 12 — Species Ten-C — A Review

10th June, 2022.

Right … I’m feeling slightly pressured.

As … ?

Dinner’s almost ready!

Yes: it’s Friday night, again: and?   I’m going to be watching the next episode of Star Trek: Discovery.

Is it’s on a par with last week’s?

I’ll let you know, later!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10th June 2022.

10th June, 2022.

I put in for extra help, a few months ago.

And had to put in for what’s called a mandatory reconsideration, when I initially got turned down.

I’ve had the results from that: last night.

The reconsideration hasn’t gone my way.

I’ve a number of options: but think I should appeal/

Which is going to involve an intimidating visit to a magistrates.

That’s an unnerving thought …

~≈⚖️≈~

Hmmm …

Yesterday saw the government announce it was planning changes to the UK’s benefit system.

Partly?   To allow those who rent from housing associations to buy their homes.

But also to allow those on benefits to use the housing component of their Universal Credit to pay for a mortgage: and not just the interest payments on a mortgage.

I’m … not convinced.

Yes: I’d love to own my own home.

But?

Even with the discount a Right to Buy Scheme allows, I’d never be able to afford buy my own home.

Nor the inevitable maintenance costs.

On top of that?

I know that — when Margaret Thatcher’s government did something similar back in the 1980s — they allowed local councils to spend the money they made from housing sales on what they wanted.

Rather than on replacement housing stock.

Frankly?

I think the same thing could easily happen, here.

Selling off the stock … and not replacing it …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10th June, 2020.

10th June, 2020.

Yes: I admit to being baffled.

I have no idea why I get earworms: songs playing through my head.

Nor why a given is banging around in my skull.

But I’ve had one going through my brain, this morning.

The Fishermen Friends Blow the Man Down.

I’ve just realised what that line said … !

Nope!

I’m not translating it!

~≈≈~

Just as a thought … ?

I posted a few bits — at the end of May — about digital poverty.   To the point I’m planning a piece on it.

It’s a complicated subject … so I’m taking my time.

I hope, though, to have the initial post up, within the week.

I’d love to get your feedback.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10th June, 2019.

10th May, 2019.

Yes: I’m off to the Job Centre, today.

And … ?   I’m vaguely looking forward to it.

I’ve an interview, tomorrow: and I’m trying to arrange the fare to get there.

Hopefully?

That’ll go through rapidly, and be the right amount.

The last fare I tried arranging?

Was a fiasco.

~≈¥≈~

Can I make a quick confession … ?

I’m not a video gamer: beyond playing casual games like Tetris, on my phone.

But … ?

A clip of Keanu Reeves just floated past … as he’s playing an NPC in the upcoming X-Box game, Cyberpunk 2077.

That caught me … as the original role playing game, Cyberpunk 2020, was a favourite.

The background world was quite the thing.

At any rate … ?   Getting the console for just the one game would be a serious waste of money.

But I wouldn’t mind a look at that: just to see what they’ve done with the background.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10th June, 2018

10th June 2018.

Yep: it’s true … I’ve a day off.

Today and tomorrow.

I’ve got work to do, though.

Frankly?

Being single is lovely: but does men no-one’s around to volunteer to do the laundry …

Which reminds me …

I possibly need to put my teatowels through the wash …

Dr Who — Series 10: Episode 9 — Empress of Mars

11th June, 2017.

Oh, now don’t you just HATE getting old?

You don’t?

I do.

If there’s money involved.

I managed to get to Brentwood High Street today: to a cash machine.
  • Shoved my card in the thing.
  • Check my balance.
  • Requested a tenner.
  • Took my card out.
  • Walked away from the machine …
Having forgotten to take the money, when I took my card.

By the time I got back to the cash machine?   (A short fat guy running down the High Street was possibly quite a site.)

The tenner had — understandably — gone for a burton.

I’d kick myself.

Except I’d very probably miss.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10-6-2017

That’s …

Worrying …

Right now?

Right now, Prime Minister, Theresa May, is organising her minority government.

And, behind the scenes?   Arranging the details of how her party will work with the Democratic Unionists, in Northern Ireland.

I get the impression that’s going to cause issues.

Apparently?   Ruth Davidson, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, has admitted to reservations.

As Ian Paisley’s old party?   Are known to be socially conservative: and opposed to gay marriage, and abortion.

Ms Davidson?   Is known to be planning to marry her female partner in the not too distant future.

Personally?

I’m deeply concerned.   From the little I know, the DUP are extremely socially conservative: and have had at least one MP endorsed by loyalist paramilitaries.

I was a child in the 1970s: and remember hearing the phrase “a ceasefire has failed,” too many times.

I’m worried this will set up a nasty situation reminiscent of the Troubles.

Here’s hoping … !

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10-6-2016

Right …

It’s Friday: and also payday.

Which means, as I’m back at work, today, that getting into town, paying my bills, and then doing some shopping?

Is going to involve a lot of walking around!

No problem, there, I think: I could do with losing a bit of weight.

Even so?

I’ll probably appreciate the sleep, tonight.
