Oh, well THAT Worked …

Well, it did.

Something I know Ubuntu — in its Karmic Koala incarnation — is capable of doing, is creating a couple of things.

One piece of software allows you to construct your own custom built version of the Ubuntu Install disc: not something I’ve had much of a chance to experiment with, as Jan’s eldest daughter, Nikki — along with her fiancé, Danny — picked up the PC, yesterday.

But something I did manage to check out was buried in System>Administration.

The USB Startup Disc Creator …

Phew! This is taken longer than I thought … !

I’ve just had Tim’s ol’ friend, David, on the phone.

Wanting to know how to copy and paste his CV to an email!

I swear, I’m going to have to start charging money, at some point!!!!!

But, suffice to say, I know I’ve now managed to talk him through downloading the Linux version of Adobe Reader, so he can convert the scan he did of his CV into a text form, edit it, and mail it to whoever he need to mail it to.

Remind me to ask you about the phrase ‘Can Did’, at some point, Tim …

Now, where was I … ?

Oh, yeah … !

USB Startup Disc Creator!

Now I know there’s nothing — on a GUI level — available for this on OS X: it can be done, however, using Terminal, although it’s something I’ve not had the chance to check or test.

However, having Jan’s freshly Ubuntu’d up PC, here, over the weekend, did allow me to use the relevant software to turn a very cheap 2 Gigabyte flash memory stick into an Ubuntu start stick.

I’m just hoping that Brentwood Library’s staff didn’t actually notice me checking to see if it would work.

Which it self evidently did!

And, no, Adrian, I can see you raising an iBrow, I didn’t actually install Ubuntu on one of their machine’s, I think I’d’ve never been able to get a film out, again!

And the Live disc wouldn’t allow me to use the computer to connect through their network, to the wider Web.

But — if nothing else — I can now say to myself that I know that the process works!

Oh, and Tim, Adrian, Kevin?

Those 2 Gigabyte USB flash drives are only £5•99p from Currys …
