Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 9-8-2016

You know, I’ve got a documentary on, right now.

Last night’s Brexit: The Battle for Britain: aired, originally, by BBC 2.

Fascinating to watch: and a remainder of quite how badly wrong that referendum went.

Personally, I voted to remind: feeling the UK was and is, better off in.   Something I still feel to be the case.

Especially given the Government’s voted to delay any decision on whether to start building the Hinckley Point power station.

I can understand Theresa May having doubts about a Chinese company sinking money into a UK infrastructure project.

But?   How many foreign companies do the same?   Quite a few, I believe.   (Indeed, from the little I know, Chinese cabling and routers — provided by Huawei — are key to the British internet: and, for most of us, our computers, phones and tablets, are built with Chinese parts and US software.)

In light of that vote to leave the EU, Britain’s got to encourage foreign investment.

And be seen to do so.

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video

Q1) 9th August, 1968, saw the birth of actress, Gillian Anderson.   In which series does she play Dr Bedelia Du Maurier?
Q2) 9th August, 1930, saw the debut of Dizzy Dishes.   Which cartoon character made their debut in it?
Q3) Internment — without trial — was introduced in which part of the UK, on 9th August, 1971: England, Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland?
Q4) Japanese occupied Manchuria was invaded: on 9th August, 1945.   By forces from Communist where?
Q5) More to the point, Manchuria was the Japanese occupied part of where?
Q6) Finally … 9th August, 1877, saw the art of the Battle of the Big Hole.   A battle between the US Army: and which tribe of Native Americans?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 8th August, 1953, saw the birth of racing driver, Nigel Mansell.   Name any one of the four Formula One teams he’s driven for.
A1) Lotus, Williams, Ferrari or McLaren.
Q2) 8th August, 2001, saw Tom Cruises’s divorce finalized.  His divorce from whom?
A2) Nicole Kidman.
Q3) 8th August, 1980, saw fire hit the Central Hotel, in Bundoran.   Town and hotel, are in which European country?
A3) Ireland.
Q4) Airship, Graf Zeppelin, began a ’round the world trip: on 8th August, 1929.   The trip was instigated by which media mogul?
A4) William Randolph Hurst.
Q5) Finally … 8th August, 1930, saw the birth of TV writer, Terry Nation.   Which Nation created series starred Carolyn Seymour as Abby Grant?
A5) Survivors.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“I like a high-tempo passing game.”
Former England manager, Roy Hodgson, born 9th August, 1947.
And a kick tune from the Mighty Hannibal …

Have a nice day … !

*        I THINK she’s survived, Olga‡^: remind me to ask Debbi about some of her trips.   But I know what you mean about Native American’s dealings with European settlers: I believe the various North American tribes had it just as badly.   And you’re right: I’d not mind seeing Machu Picchu, myself.   Pretty much why I did a Teaser about it, last year … !

†        Oh, ANYTHING’S betting than slipping over in the Tub, Debbi‡^: almost done it, myself a few times!   I posted the tune, as it was Chris Foreman’s birthday, yesterday: the Madness guitarist co-wrote that particular tune.   Never DID get into The Fall: although I DO know they were one of John Peel’s favourite bands: indeed, they recorded the most sessions for his show.   You really should have a look at the list of who recorded a Peel session: it’s amazing who did one … !   (Oh, I caught Citizenfour.   Interesting stuff, that: I’m going to have to sit down with it, and have a GOOD watch.)

‡        The quote — and picture — are from the role-playing game, Paranoia: the setting was kind of like Logan’s Run … done by the Ghostbusters team …

^        The BBC’s been doing a fascinating documentary about the tribes of the Pacific Northwest, which kind of matches my bedtime reading.   I’m going through Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea: if I’ve understood things, she took some inspiration from the Pacific Northwest.

Q1) Hannibal
Q2) Betty Boop
Q3) Northern Ireland
Q4) Russia’s Red Army
Q5) It seems it depends on the definition of Manchuria. It’s either all in China or it’s a larger region that would occupy part of China and Russia.(I think we’re probably talking about China…)
Q6) Nez Percé
Oh, yes, no doubt the North American Tribes didn't fair any better. Now they have some casinos...
Interesting reading.
