The Daily Teaser …

You know, it really is distracting, what you can find on Blogger, sometimes, it really is …

I’ve just spent an entertaining twenty minutes or so, reading through part three of The Arc Of Truth on Adam Whitehead’s The Wertzone.

Fascinating stuff, for me as a science-fiction fan, and beautifully written, too.

Kind of inspiring, I wouldn’t mind being able to write as well, myself.

Actually, I always think of founding Dr Feelgood member, Wilko Johnson: he’s just as inspirational a rhythm guitarist. In a slightly different way. I always used to see him play, and think “Ooh, I could do that … ”.

And then you realise his regular bassist is fellow Blockhead, Norman Watt-Roy. Who always made think that, however long I lived, I’d never be THAT good at something!!!

But enough, already! Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday saw Andy, bless him, get the official First-In-Clap, with both he and Andrea getting five out of five: Andrea, bless her, bagging the Quote of the Day, and Andy getting the literary nod!

And the Official Dick Van Dyke Impersonators Award!

Anyway, here’s today’s questions, along with the ‘How To’ and License

Q1) 14th December, 1896, saw the opening of the Glasgow Subway Underground railway: by what literary nickname is it known to many people outside Glasgow?

Q2) 14th December, 1962, saw the Mariner 2 probe make the first fly-by of which planet?

Q3) 101 years earlier, 14th December, 1861 saw the death of which member of the British Royal Family?

Q4) Many years later, 14th December, 2008, saw which US President get (nearly) hit by flying shoes?

Q5) And finally, 14th December, 1911, saw who’s team become the first Europeans to reach the South Pole?

And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 13th December, 1981, saw both Martial Law, and a State of Emergency, imposed in which East European country?

A1) Poland.

Q2) More to the point, the leaders of which trade Union were arrested as part of this State of Emergency?

A2) Solidarity.

Q3) A few years earlier, 13th December, 1925, saw the birth of which US actor and comedian?

A3) Dick van Dyke. (Any one want to start singing? Andrea? Andy? Anyone?)

Q4) 13th December, 1939, was the date of the WW2 era Battle of the River Plate: when the HMS Exeter, HMS Ajax and HMNZS Achilles fought which German pocket battleship?

A4) The Admiral Graf Spee.

Q5) And finally, December 13th, 2003, saw the capture of which Iraqi politician?

A5) Saddam Hussein al-Tikriti: commonly known as Saddam Hussein.

Enjoy those, everyone, I’ll catch you later!

1. You know, it's embarassing, I spent 2 weeks in Glasgow and never knew a thing about it, and only found out when I was in San Francisco.
