The Daily Teaser — 19-10-2015

Now that was nice …

You may or may not remember, but I mentioned, yesterday, that I was off to a staff meeting.

Which was rather good.

Something else that was good … ?

Was popping into the pub, afterwards.

No, don’t go looking like that: I don’t actually drink!

I had a halfway decent cup of tea.   Before you get that look on your face … !

At ANY rate … ?   I and some of my co-workers ended up in a local pub, having a civilised — ish — breakfast.   Although you wouldn’t want to hear SOME of the discussions!

It has to be said … that was rather pleasant … !

~≈¥≈~

But let’s get a move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Olga* and Debbi* putting in their answers: with Olga† scoring six out of six and Debbi‡ bagging five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video

Q1) Researchers at Rutgers University isolated Streptomycin on 19th October, 1943.   Streptomycin is an antibiotic that works against which disease?
Q2) 19th October, 1935, saw the League of Nation impose sanctions on Fascist controlled Italy: after Italy invaded which African nation?
Q3) 19th October, 202 BC saw Roman legions defeat the army led by Hannibal.   Hannibal’s forces were from which North African city-state?
Q4) Napoleon Bonaparte made a famous retreat on 19th October, 1812.  From which Russian city?
Q5) Finally … During the US Civil War, 19th October, 1864, saw Confederate soldiers attack Saint Albans.   In WHICH state was Saint Albans?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) A suicide bombing occurred on the 18th October, 2007: which killed the former Prime Minister of Pakistan.   Who was that PM?
Q2) 18th October, 1851, saw the original publication of the novel then called The Whale.   How is that book better known?
A2) Moby Dick.
Q3) More to the point, who wrote The Whale?
Q4) The Soviet era Venera 4 probe arrived at Venus: on 18th October, 1967.   Venus’ atmosphere is 96% what: Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide or Oxygen?
Q5) Which country declared itself independent from the Soviet Union: on 18th October, 1991?
Q6) Finally … 18th October, 1867 saw the USA take possession of what’s now Alaska: from which country?
A6) Russia.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“There is a big difference between fighting the cold war and fighting radical Islam.   The rules have changed and we haven’t.”
John Le Carré, born 19th October, 1931
And this tune …

Have a good day … !

*        Yeah, sorry about that, ladies: I managed to make a mistake with Q5, yesterday: and put ‘17’ instead of ‘18’.   Sorry!

†        I HAVE confess, Olga: I’ve never actually read Moby Dick!   It’s one of the UK’s best known works … but never grabbed me.   I should remedy that, I think … !   (Re the brewery?   I think there’s possibly a reason it never got talked about. I think probably everyone in the area probably got taught how to behave safely around it, and the delivery vans, which kept down any accidents.   And because everyone ‘knew’ how to act, it was worth talking about. I could EASILY be wrong, though … !)

‡        A whole $70, Debbi … ?   Better not tell the taxman … !   :D   At any rate, I’d call that a good start … !   (You know, you’ll HAVE to see if you’re publishers will fund an international tour for you … !)

Q1) Tuberculosis.
Q2) Ethiopia.
Q3) Carthage
Q4) Moscow
Q5) Vermont
I studied a degree in American Literature so I caught up on quite a few of the classics (not all) but loved Moby Dick most of all (not that I don't like many others, but considering the subject, I didn't expect it to like it that much. I thought it was an adventure book but... well, not quite.)
