The D-Day Teaser

You know, I’ve got to admit, I had the usual late night, last night: Movie Night Adrian and I managed to catch one of the little underrated stars of recent British cinema.

And I think I managed to catch an episode of Dr Who that — if not a masterpiece — was certainly the highlight of the series, so far.

Especially Tony Curran’s appearance as Vincent van Gogh.

I think performance is up there with the work Bernard Cribbins put in on the show …

•••••

But I’m digressing, aren’t I … ?

Aren’t I … ?

Let’d get cracking, shall we, I know Trevor’s just poked me on FB … !!

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both he and Kaiju bagging 5 out of 5, with Kaiju getting his answers in first, and Trevor putting in some good quotes from Ronald Reagan.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s themed Teaser, shall we … ? Here’s the questions, along with the ‘How Toand License

Q1) 6th June, 1944, saw the start of the D-Day landings in Normandy: name any of the three beaches used by the British army.

Q2) Similarly, what were either of the names used for the beaches used by the US Army … ?

Q3) The US landings on one of those beaches was the subject of which Tom Hanks film … ?

Q4) Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, André Bourvil, and Gert Fröbe, all appeared in which film about the Normandy landings … ?

Q5) And finally … What name was given — specifically — was given to the Normandy landings?

And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) During the 2nd Boer War, 5th June, 1900 saw British troops capture which South African city?
A1) Pretoria.

Q2) 5th June, 1977, saw the world’s first practical personal computer go on sale: what model was it … ?
A2) The Apple 2. (Or Apple][. Or Apple//. Or Apple ii. You kinda get me point … )

Q3) 5th June, 2004, saw the death of the retired 40th President of the USA: who was he … ?
A3) Ronald Reagan.

Q4) 5th June, 1947, saw the birth of musician, Freddie Stone: he was guitarist and vocalist for which US band … ?
A4) Sly and the Family Stone.

Q5) And finally … 5th June, 1968, saw the shooting of which US senator … ?
A5) Senator Robert Kennedy.

Enjoy those, everyone.

And I’ll leave with possibly the quote from Sir Winston Churchill.

We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be; we shall fight on beaches, landing grounds, in fields, in streets and on the hills. We shall never surrender and even if, which I do not for the moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, will carry on the struggle until in God’s good time the New World with all its power and might, sets forth to the liberation and rescue of the Old.

“Speech is civilization itself. The word... preserves contact / it is silence which isolates.”

“It is love, not reason, that is stronger than death.”

“War is only a cowardly escape from the problems of peace.”

“It is a strange fact that freedom and equality, the two basic ideas of democracy, are to some extent contradictory. Logically considered, freedom and equality are mutually exclusive, just as society and the individual are mutually exclusive.”

[Quotes from General George S. Patton because he was nothing less than...ahem...inspirational.]

"We want to get the hell over there. The quicker we clean up this Goddamned mess, the quicker we can take a little jaunt against the purple pissing Japs and clean out their nest, too. Before the Goddamned Marines get all of the credit." ~ General George S. Patton, Jr (This politically incorrect speech was given to Patton's troops on June 5, 1944.)

"Sure, we want to go home. We want this war over with. The quickest way to get it over with is to go get the bastards who started it. The quicker they are whipped, the quicker we can go home. The shortest way home is through Berlin and Tokyo. And when we get to Berlin, I am personally going to shoot that paper hanging son-of-a-bitch Hitler. Just like I'd shoot a snake!"
General George S. Patton - (addressing to his troops before Operation Overlord) - 5th June 1944

"There is one great thing that you men will all be able to say after this war is over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in the great World War II, you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, Well, your Granddaddy shoveled shit in Louisiana. No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, Son, your Granddaddy rode with the Great Third Army and a Son-of-a-Goddamned-Bitch named Georgie Patton!" ~ General George S. Patton, Jr (This speech was delivered to Patton's troops on June 5, 1944)
