Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 3rd January 2025.

3rd January, 2024.

You know … I have to head into town: to pick up some meds!

And I get the impression I’m going to have to rush today’s post as a result!

As I’ve got to look after my nephew, this afternoon.

Heigh … ho!

~≈👦🏼≈~

I’ve also got to confess … that a friend reminded me of something.

That, as I’m claiming a qualifying benefit, I can claim a bus pass that lets me travel for free.

At least in Essex: and possibly on buses run by Transport for London.

That … ?

That’s useful.

It’s just a shame I got reminded about it … on the day the bus fares went up!

~≈🚏≈~

Oh … yesterday was the anniversary of the original airing of “The Way Back”, the first episode of Blake’s Seven.

Following in the footsteps of the Doctor Who — The Collection box sets, the BBC have re-released the first series in a set that includes two copies of each episode: an upscaled version of the episode as broadcast, and one with updated effects.

I watched the updated version: which was interesting to watch.

About my only criticism?

Was with the original scripting of this episode.

Blake is framed for assaulting a minor.

Then, when transported to a prison planet?

Mixed, openly, with other prisoners.

There’s my criticism.

From the little I know of these things, any prisoner accursed of those sorts of crimes would not be mixed with the general run of prisoners.

They’d get seriously assaulted, if not murdered* …

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga†, Mum‡ and Debbi§ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring ten out of ten and Mum on eight.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        3rd January is the feast day of Saint Genevieve.   She’s the patron saint of where: New York, London, Paris or Munich?

Q2)        Where is that city: the USA, the UK, France or Germany?

Q3)        A gun battle took place in London, on 3rd January, 1911.   The battle was considered a scandal: because of the involvement of the then Home Secretary.   Which Home Secretary: Herbert Gladstone, Winston Churchill or Reginald McKenna?

Q4)        NASA launched the Mars Polar Lander on 3rd January.   Of which years of the 1990s?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Jurong Bird Park closed: on 3rd January, 2023.   It had opened on 3rd January or which year of the 1970s?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        The first episode of Blake’s Seven aired on 2nd January.   Of which year of the 1970s?
A1)        1978.

Q2)        That day was a what: Sunday, Monday or Tuesday?
A2)        Monday.   (For some reason?   That’s always stuck in my mind: Dr Who was on Saturday, Blake’s 7 was on Monday.   The BBC aired Star Trek on Wednesdays, if memory serves.)

Q3)        What channel was it on: BBC1, BBC2 or ITV?
A3)        BBC1.

Q4)        The show’s creator was Terry Nation.   He created which post-apocalyptic drama: The Walking Dead, Survivors or Threads?
A4)        Survivors.   (He also created the Daleks, for Dr Who.)

Q5)        The main character, Blake, was played by who: Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow or Peter Miles?
A5)        Gareth Thomas.

Q6)        Name either one of the two actors who played Space Commander Travis.
A6)        Stephen Greif or Brian Croucher.

Q7)        Jacqueline Pearce played the show’s iconic female villain.   Who was that villain?
A7)        Servalan.

Q8)        The show’s original spaceship was called what: the Liberator, Freedom One or the Star Hawk?
A8)        The Liberator.

Q9)        That ship’s computer was called what: Bon, Tantra or Zen … ?
A9)        Zen.

Q10)        Finally … ?   The show’s last episode, “Blake”, aired in which year of the 1980s?
A10)        1981.
Here’s a thought …
“You will be judged by what you succeed at, gentlemen, not by what you attempt.”
Clement Attlee, 3 January 1883 – 8 October 1967.
And a song …

The next ten question set is on the 8th of January.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        As a case in point?   Urfan Sharif — recently gaoled for murdering his daughter, Sara — has been assaulted by two inmates at Belmarsh Prison.   That’ll be because:
  • He killed a child.
  • He wasn’t segregated off for his own protection.
Prisoners don’t like those who harm children.   Neither do wardens …

†        Yeah: the preview DVDs will be well made, Olga.   The people they’re aimed at, have serious home cinemas!   And any rips made from those DVDs will look pretty good, too.   The iffy quality ones will be made by someone sneaking into the cinema with a GoPro …
Blake’s Seven is quite a good series, Olga, and holds up reasonably well.   It’s still remembered for the big ending!
Sends us the photos from the fair!

        Hello, Mum!

§        I don’t know if it’s as crappy as Hank makes out, Debbi.   Although he’s right it has a bleak world view.   It’s also got one of THE controversial endings: certainly since “Fall Out”.   It’s possibly worth catching, if you can.   (I’m sending a taster: the first two episodes … )

Thanks, Paul. I will keep you posted. WE've been there this morning and have to go back this afternoon. I hope we get everything done and don't take too long, because the whole place needs to be ready before we leave tonight. Tomorrow it should be an early start. (Doors open at 10, but there are customs, make up, and last minute organising to do...). Of course, the main team are the ones who have to stay behind, but I try to help as much as I can. Not sure what I'll do tomorrow. Probably I'll be showing people in. I hope I get to wear a turban again!
Have fun with your nephew, and you're right about the prisoners, although I am not sure that would have been accepted practice years back (probably not if we think about some of the accepted forms of punishment).
