Both operating systems!!

I managed to borrow one of Adrian’s spare laptops, today; one he’s planning to selling on, at some point. I also know he’s thinking £50 would be a little bit too little low. I’m thinking if you’re interested in a second hand Toshiba laptop — with a 60 Gb hard drive, although I’m not sure of the rest of the spec — giving Adrian a shout, and offered him around £100, you’d be able to haggle.

I’ve written this post on it - rather than the Mini - not long after I’d installed a copy of Ubuntu Studio. I’m hoping at some point to grab Kelly the Charmer, who’s a singer and guitarist, and her mate Big Ronnie. Who’s 6’ of very cute, very intelligent, highly trained photographer.

I've also found that I can quite happily plug my USB flash drive in, so I can use the onboard Ubuntu text editor, to write this, and save it and some screen grabs!

And I’ve got to confess that using Ubuntu Studio — for me — is a touch … well … a touch pointless.

It is — for a non artist — not a lot of help in doing stuff, although it — when it’s installing — ask which particular set of application’s you need to put on; audio manaipulation, video, or image manipulation. After all, Ubuntu Studio is aimed at the creative’s amongst us, being set up with a lot more camera drivers. And the people behind have jiggled around with the kernel, and the rest of the code, so it can handle the heavy stuff that this tends to be.

So as an alternative, I’ve managed to put on the mainstream version of Ubuntu on, which is an even easier install; the usual install disc for Jaunty Jackalope — the current version of Ubuntu — is what’s called a ‘live’ disc, which — if you reboot with the disc in the dvd drive — takes over your computer, and lets you install the operating system.

Which I personally found to be on a par with installing OS X on the ol’ G4, on the Mini.

I’m no coder, or IT guy, but …

Something I know Denny — who’s using Ubuntu on his laptop — also found quite easy to do.
