Übermensch …

Well, there’s a thing; I’ve just literally got home from work, and found that BBC3 was showing the Bryan Singer directed 2006 film, “Superman Returns”.

Which I’ve seen before, and got to admit, I liked.

I do.

Brandon Routh as was remarkable good, I thought, although the real show stealer was Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor; I’ll confess it struck me that he had a real blast, filming this.

But …

Well …

It struck me that I miss A certain Mr C. Reeve.

I grew up on the 1978 film, “Superman”, don’t forget, which means that, for me, Christopher Reeve is going to be the defining actor in the part. And a major part* of that was …

Well …

The best way to sum it up, I feel, is to point to a scene towards the end of the original film, where Reeve, as Superman, replaces the US flag on top of the White House; with a sly smile on his face that, to me, said “Look, OK, I know I’m wearing my knickers outside my tights. But BOY, I’m having fun!”.

That’s what gave the original film the edge, for me.

I’m not saying “Superman Returns” is a bad film.

Not at all.

But Brandon Routh — and Dean Cain on TV — for me, just didn’t have the humour of the late Christopher Reeve.

That’s everybody’s loss, I think.

Oh, and just in case Kevin’s reading this, a yagga-yagga is … well, here’s the definition …

Enjoy!!

* And one can’t ignore Margot Kidder, as Lois Lane, in all of this. The Kidder spin on the character give the rôle lot more feistiness — more sheer balls — than any of her successors in the part.
