Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 5-9-2016

I’ve come to a decision.

To give my formal — back-dated — notice in at work.

Saturday night?   Saw me arguing with one of the managers about the state of the toilets.

Something I’d cleaned at the end of the night: and immediately offered to do again.

I should add at this point?   The manager concerned is good at his job.   But one I’d ALWAYS got on badly with: and felt wasn’t impressed by me.

To the point where, today?   Once I’ve been into the job centre to register, I’ll be talking to them, and the Citizen’s Advise Bureau about Constructive Dismissal.

I never wanted this.

I prefer working to not working.

I like having money in regular weekly amounts.

I like being able to pay my bills, myself: rather than rely on the state.

So, as you can imagine, this isn’t — or wasn’t — the easiest decision to make.

I just hope things go well for me.

Things are going to get … hairy …

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Angel*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with all three scoring six out of six.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 5th September, 1882, saw the founding of Hotspur F C.   The team’s now known as which Premiership side?
Q2) More to the point, the club plays its home games, where?
Q3) The Benelux Union was formed: on 5th September, 1944.   Name any of the three member states.
Q4) On The Road was first published: on 5th September, 1957.   Who wrote On The Road?
Q5) 5th September, 1918, saw the release of the Russian Decree, On Red Terror: by the then Russian Secret Police.   What was that police force called?
Q6) Finally … Soviet Embassy clerk, Igor Gouzenko, defected: on 5th September, 1945.   Defected to where?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) Native American leader, Geronimo, surrendered to US forces: on 4th September of which year?
A1) 1886.
Q2) More to the point, he was a leader of which tribal peoples: the Lakota, Apache or Cree?
A2) Apache.
Q3) 4th September, 1985, saw footage released: of which ship-wreck?
A3) The RMS Titanic.
Q4) Salvador Allende was elected as president: on 4th September, 1970.   Of where?
A4) Chile.
Q5) Who — on 4th September, 1972 — became the first competitor to win seven gold medals at one Olympic games?
Q6) Finally … Romulus Augustulus was deposed: on 4th September, 476.   He’s generally agreed to be the last Emperor of where: Russia, Byzantium, or the Western Roman Empire?
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”
Darryl F. Zanuck, September 5, 1902 – December 22, 1979.
And this tune …

Have a good day!

*        Oh, VERY true, Angel, VERY true … !   I’ll have to take it one day at a time, I think …

†        Oh, a vow renewal!?   I’ve never been to one, Olga: most of my friends are no-where near getting married … !   (You know, I’m going to have to look at writing for a living, Olga: you and Debbi are sort of inspiration, on that front … )

‡        I think I’m going to have to get it from Brentwood Library, Debbi, under the circumstances.   (And seriously think about writing that quiz book: you’ve only been encouraging me for years, now: and I’m going to have time … )

Sorry to hear about your job, although I have the feeling it's been a long-time coming.
I don't live off my writing by any stretch of the imagination (I hardly sell any books. I suspect Debbie does better than I do). Translations bring some money in but if you work for yourself it means having to find clients and being your own business manager, marketing person, etc. (Most authors can't afford to pay for a translation or aren't sure it will be worth their money, so I don't get many of those). At the moment I'm doing translations and editing of website content for a marketing firm but not big money (and bizarre deadlines. And only a temporary contract).
Each individual person's circumstances are different, and a quiz book would have more potential and identifiable market (and you could try to get a traditional publisher interested. You have a presence on-line already and that should help. Check the Writer's Yearbook and make enquiries before writing the book as if they are interested they might guide you into what they need). Best of luck, and don't let my lack of success put you off. I just don't enjoy trying to convince people to write my books and I'm terrible at marketing my own stuff, and you need to be good at that (or have circumstances align for you).

That's a great idea. You could put it up on Amazon, etc. AND sell it from your blog! :)

You should get a job offer from someone else before quitting. I have found it's always easier getting a job, when you already have one.
