The Daily Teaser …

Hmmm …

Interesting range of answers, yesterday

Possibly because I should have maybe put down William Caxton’s typographer, rather than just co-publisher; the answer I had for it, was Wynkyn de Worde.

I’ve got to admit that I recognised the name, as Terry Pratchett called the main character in The Truth, Ankh-Morpork’s first newspaper reporter, William De Worde, after both men. Entirely appropriate, as Wynkyn de Worde set up the first printing press, in Fleet Street …

Anyway, let’s move on …

Yesterday saw Emma officially get the First-In Clap; which means she’s beaten Andrea, Tim, and Trevor to it. And all four got 5 out of 6.

Anyway, let’s have today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, and Licence

Q1) 19th November is International Men’s Day in many parts of the world; it’s also — according to the WTO — World what day?

Q2) On a less scatological note, today in 1863 saw President Abraham Lincoln make which famous speech?

Q3) A few year’s earlier, 19th November, 1850, saw Alfred, Lord Tennyson, be appointed to which government post? (Andrea, we’re all looking at you … )

Q4) November 19th, 1969, saw Edison Arantes do Nascimento score his 1000th goal; how is he better known?

Q5) 19th November, 1977, saw Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, make the first visit of an Egyptian President, to which country?

Q6) And finally, today in 1994, saw the very first what in the UK?

And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) November 18th, 1477, saw the publication of Dictes or Sayengis of the Philosophres, the first printed book, in England; which printer published it?

A1) William Caxton.

Q2) More to the point, what was the name of his co-publisher?

A2) Wynkyn (or Wynken) de Worde. (Born as Jan van Wynkyn, of Woerth.)

Q3) 18th November, 1926, saw which famous author turn down his Nobel Prize money?

A3) George Bernard Shaw. (Who famously said “I can forgive Alfred Nobel for inventing dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize.”)

Q4) November the 18th, 1905, saw Prince Carl of Denmark become King Haakon 7th; of where?

A4) Norway.

Q5) November 18th, 1928, is the birthday of which cartoon character?

A5) Mickey Mouse. (Because it saw the general release of Steamboat Willie, the first cartoon with synchronised sound, and the third with Mickey Mouse.)

Q6) And finally, today in 1978, saw the largest mass suicide in U7S history; who was it lead by?

A6) Jimmie Jones.

Enjoy those, folks.

And I’d love to hear everyone’s reasoning for their answer to yesterday’s question 2 …

Alfred, Lord Tennyson
"The Burial of Love"

His eyes in eclipse,Pale-cold his lips,The light of his hopes unfed,
Mute his tongue,His bow unstrung
With the tears he hath shed, Backward drooping his graceful head,Love is dead
