Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 31st January, 2021

31st January, 2021.

I think we can safely say it’s official.

It’s now not raining!

Which means the weather’s improved.

Which is nice …

~≈¥≈~

Have you ever heard of guitarist, Hilton Valentine?

I hadn’t: until today, the day his death was announced.

It turns out I know his most famous piece of work, though.

The riff in this version of this song …

He’ll be missed …

~≈¥≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Trevor*, Olga†, Mum‡, Debbi^ and Edithª putting in their answers: with Olga, Trevor and Debbi on five out of five, Mum on three, and Edith on zero.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        31st January, 1937, saw the birth of composer, Phillip Glass.   He composed the music for the biopic, Kundun.   The film’s about whom: Pope Francis, the 14th Dalai Lama or Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis?

Q2)        31st January, 1921, saw the birth of actress, Carol Channing.   In which US city?

Q3)        During the Battle of Bolimów, 31st January, 1915, saw Germany use what for the first time: tanks, landmines or poison gas?

Q4)        31st January saw Nauru become independent from Australia: in which year?

Q5)        Finally … ?   31st January, 1892, saw the birth of singer/songwriter, Eddie Cantor.   He wrote the Merrily We Roll Along theme for which company’s cartoons: Disney’s, Warner Brothers or Pixar’s?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        30th January, 1959, saw an unsinkable ship hit an iceberg, and sink.   Which ship: the RMS Titanic, the MS Hans Hedtoft or the MV Explorer?
A1)        The MS Hans Hedtoft.   (All three ships sank after striking icebergs: the MS Hans Hedtoft lost all ninety-five people aboard: the last to lose lives in a crash with an iceberg.)

Q2)        The Naro 1 rocket was launched on 30th January, 2013.   By which nation: South Korea, North Korea or Japan?
A2)        South Korea.

Q3)        30th January is the (Orthodox) feat day of Saint Hippolytus of Rome.   He’s the patron of which animal: dogs, chickens or horses?
A3)        Horses.

Q4)        30th January, 1835, saw Richard Lawrence attempt to assassinate which US president?
A4)        Andrew Jackson.   (And yes: I’ve double checked this!!!!!!)

Q5)        Finally … ?   Thirteen protestors were killed in the Bogside area of Derry/Londonderry: on 30th January, 1972.   The event’s know as Bloody … what?
A5)        Sunday.
Here’s a thought …
“Don’t look back!”
Zane Grey, January 31, 1872 – October 23, 1939.
And the Candyman Suite

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Feel free to share today’s video Teaser.

Have a good day.

*      That table’s possibly worth a few bob, now, Trevor: antique pub furnishings usually are.   How much Court’s planes went for, I couldn’t tell you: but they look … um … colourful!
Ha!   The last time I thought about putting money on something?   It was going to be on who I thought would be playing the Thirteenth Doctor.   I’m glad I didn’t, in the end.   I was convinced it was going to be Kris Marshall!

†        Now you mention it, Olga, it does sound good!   Dogs always seem to go rouf.   Rouf, rouf, rouf!   He says!   At ANY rate?   This article’s helpful: it’s got the various words for ‘woof,’ in different languages!   It’s got the Spanish version, but not a Catalan one.
The thought occurs, Olga … I’m assuming Raffles would be the name of the dog … in the English language version of the book?   What would be the Spanish version?

‡        Hello, Mum!

^        Possibly not as disturbing as Carom, Debbi!   There’s no pockets on those tables!   And, apparently? The French name for the game can also refer to multi-vehicle car crashes!
Talking of presidential?   Trump has “… parted ways with lawyers representing him in his impeachment trial in the Senate.”   It says here.   The BBC report tells us at least two of his lawyers think his defence — of alleged election fraud — is … umm … I believe the polite US term is baloney …
Oh, about the earworm?   Glad to help!   I’ve had the complete Ingénue going through my head, ever since it turned up!   Mind you, Season of Hollow Soul is good.   (If that hasn’t been covered by a bad Emo band, something’s wrong …)

ª        Oh, crikey, I know what that’s like, Edith!   It’s partly why and try to be careful about what I eat!   I hoped it cleared up, quickly.
I hope that storm does, too!   I don’t think the UK’s had that much snow since the nineteen-seventies!

I have not had a bet in years. I only used to bet on The Derby and The Grand National. Usually on the horse that I would get in the office sweepstake. Never big stakes often 50P each way. Pity I never got Foinavon which won the Grand National at odds of 100/1.

It is sunny , cold and Icy out there. The great Lakes on the side-walk are iced over.

I must confess a lot of people here use foreign names for their dogs, especially depending on what breed they are, so I might get away with Raffles anyway. Oh, in case you're curious, dogs' barks, in Catalan are supposed to sound "Bup! Bup!" Go figure! (I'm not sure the Spanish "Guau" works for me either [now it makes me think of "Wow" more than anything else, but it is also used as an expression of surprise or amazement, so... Not so for Bup, thankfully!)
