Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-7-2025 — The New Hebrides.

30th July, 2025: the New Hebrides,

It’s officially official: I had repairmen in, yesterday.

Lowering my cupboards, so you know.

I am suitably grateful.

To both the carpenters who did the job, my landlords for approving and arranging it … and to the occupational therapists who insisted on it in the first place.

Being able to reach the shelves — without a stool or a step ladder — feels odd, right now.

They’ve between that height since I moved in 2008.

Hopefully, though … ?

That will soon pass.

Something has caught my eye, this morning.

Or ears, I should say.

Is something that got announced on Radio 4’s Today programme: and confirmed by the Independent.

It’s a report from Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, that tells us YouTube is now the UK’s second biggest broadcasting service.

Behind the BBC, but ahead of ITV.

Even though I’m an older user who doesn’t use it as much as the younger generation?

That makes sense.

I’m finding it increasingly hard to find anything to watch on conventional broadcasters … but incredibly easy on YouTube.

There’s a song about that …

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

The day also saw Debbi leaving us a message, here.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s themed questions, shall we?

Here they, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        The New Hebrides became independent on 30th July.   30th July of which year of the 1980s?

Q2)        It became independent from two colonial powers.   France … and where else?

Q3)        Where is the New Hebrides: the South Pacific, North Pacific or North Atlantic?

Q4)        What’s the country’s current capital: Port Orly, Port Vila or Sola?

Q5)        Finally … ?   What’s the country’s current name?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        29th July saw the discovery of which dwarf planet: Sedna, Eris or Varuna?
A1)        Eris.

Q2)        It was discovered in which year: 2004, 2005 or 2006?>
A2)        2005.

Q3)        It was discovered by a team based at Palomar Observatory.   The Observatory is in which US state?
A3)        California.

Q4)        It’s a Trans-neptunian object.   In other words, it orbits further away from the sun, than what: Pluto, Neptune or Jupiter?
A4)        Neptune.

Q5)        Finally … ?   It’s named after the Greek goddess of what: strife, famine or pollution?
A5)        Strife.   (Her Roman equivalent was Discordia.)
Here’s a thought …
“The condominium lasted from 1906 until [Independence], when New Hebrides gained its independence [… ].”
From the Wikipedia entry on the New Hebrides.
And a national anthem …

The next ten question set is the Left-hander’s day quiz on 13th August.

Please mention the day to left handers you meet.

Comments will be published, tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Yeah: that could be seen as a threatened area, Olga.   Especially if it was some time after the Aurora shooting.   The management would be being cautious: even though it’s frustrating to be searched.
The washing machine, you mean, Olga§?   Or did you mean the cupboards?
Yeah: I’ve got a call out arranged for next Tuesday: the company is the one I’ve got the machine from, so it’s still under warranty: that will help!

        Hello, Mum§ … !

If I recall what I’ve read, correctly, Debbi§ … ?   Fleming went with the name, ‘Bond’, because it sounded very English: and fairly anonymous, something akin to ‘John Smith’.   I’d assume the US equivalent would be ‘John Doe’: but that doesn’t necessarily sound like a spy …
Oh, you have a reply on the review, Debbi …

§        So everyone knows, Irene has messaged me her answers: as she’s had issues logging in.   Here there are:

Good news on the cupboard front.
I was talking about the insurance possible covering maintenance for the washing machine, but, as you say, the guarantee should help.

Yes, thanks, Paul! Duly noted. Especially the Timey-Wimey bit. :)

2. the UK
3. the South Pacific

I think the Gorn must have evolved since Pike ran across them. Maybe that's why they looked less like Alien/The Borg by the time Kirk met them. :)

Timey-Whimey! Wibbley-Wobbley! (sp?)

Guinness? (sp?) Really? :)
