Interesting … movie of the evening … !
I’ve GOT to admit, I’ve just spent the night in.
A night in by meself, to be frank, and one that feature’s — frankly — not much on telly that was catching my attention.
Frankly … ?
Frankly, it’s times like this I’m really glad I’ve a pile of unwatched movies sitting around, I really do.
One of those unwatched movies … ?
Believe it of not, was the 1981 John Carpenter directed, Kurt Russell film, Escape From New York.
And when I say unwatched … ?
That’s exactly what I mean, to be frank. Would you believe that’s actually the first time I’ve seen it … ?

True, though …
In the thirty years since it’s original release, I’d never actually seen Escape From New York, until last night.
I can’t think why.
Actually, yes I can, to an extant: I think it’s the simple fact many people I’ve met have raved about it, in some way, over the years.
Escape From New York is set in an alternative — and vaguely dystopian — 1997, and sees Kurt Russell as Snake Plisken, a former Special Forces soldier condemned to the New York High security prison.
A prison that, in it’s former life, had been known as Manhattan Island.
On his way there, however, he is offered a deal by Head Warden, Bob Hauk — played by Lee Van Cleef, so you know.
Embarrassingly … ? Airforce One has been hijacked, and crashed in the high security jail.
Hauk and the government are offering Snake a full pardon.
IF he manages to rescue the President, and the tape recording he was carrying, with-in 22 hours …
Before the President’s due at an important three-way conference. And before the explosives implanted in Snake’s neck explode …

Now, I’ve got to admit that the thirty year wait between Escape From New York’s release and me actually managing to see it … ?
I actually don’t know if it was worth the unintentional wait, I really don’t.
Don’t forget, I grew up as part of the generation that was fed Star Wars, released only a few years before, were chilled by Alien, and horrified by Carpenter’s own The Thing.
And I’m thinking that, for me, those were far more entertaining movies than Escape From New York.

I will give it credit, where it’s due, though: Escape from New York did manage to give William Gibson, author of Neuromancer, an idea or two.
I personally think he did a lot better with that old dissolving implants …
