The Daily Teaser — 10-11-2015

That’s alarming …

And making me wonder why on Earth it’s happening …

Again …

I’ve got the news on: or, at least, Radio 4’s Today programme, which usual includes a news bulletin.

One of the items … ?

Is a brief piece about Ethiopia.

There’s a drought taking place.

And, according to the UN, it looks like there’s going to be starving people there — for the third time in my life-time — by 2016.

I’m quietly keeping my fingers crossed, in the hope that the various relief agencies can get moving …

And provide help in time.

Before it turns into 1984 …

~≈Â≈~

But let’s get moving on, shall we?

Yesterday’s saw Debbi* and Olga† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of six.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 10th November, 2009, saw ships from two countries navies skirmish off an island in the Yellow Sea.   Name either of the countries involved.
Q2) The very first Breeders Cup took place on 10th November, 1984.   The Cup is a what: pigeon race, greyhound race or horse race?
Q3) An earthquake took place on 10th November, 1940: with its epicentre in the Vrancea region of the Carpathians.   The region is in which European country?
Q4) Todor Zhivkov was removed from office: on 10th November, 1989.   He was the Communist leader of which country?
Q5) Finally … 10th November, 1697, saw the birth of which English illustrator and satirist?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 9th November, 1985, saw Gary Kasparov become the world’s youngest World Chess Champion: at the age of 22.   Who did he beat in the process?
A1) Anatoly Karpov.
Q2) More to the point, Kasparov’s peak FIDÉ rating — 2851 — was only beaten in which year of this century?
A2) 2013.
Q3) 9th November, 1994, saw scientist first synthesize the radioactive element, Darmstadtium.   What’s Darmstadtium’s atomic number: 109, 110 or 111?
A3) 110.
Q4) 9th November, 1998, saw the UK finally abolish capital punishment: when the relevant potions of the Human Rights Act, 1998, came into force.   When was beheading abolished as punishment in the UK: 1971, 1973 or 1975?
A4) 1973.
Q5) 9th November, 1970, saw the death of General Charles de Gaulle, former president of France.   Which President had he been: the 17th, 18th or 19th?
A5) The 18th.
Q6) Finally … who led a coup against the French government: on 9th November, 1799?
A6) Napoleon Bonaparte.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“It is not entirely out of the question that despite man’s ingenuity the insects might beat us in the end.  If they do it will be because we haven’t used our biological knowledge, but instead have employed chemists as our hired assassins to kill our fellow creatures in their cave-man fashion, ignorantly, wantonly, wastefully.”
The Year of the Pigeons, 1963, John Moore, 10 November 1907–1967.
And some restful classical music …

Enjoy your day.

*        Yes, I saw it, Debbi!   Pete Capaldi’s big speech went down very well, it seems.   I think series nine is showing itself to be VERY strong!   (Actually, Debbi … ?   I mention Penny Dreadful to Olga, in the comment, below: if you can find it in the US, it’s WELL worth checking out … !)

†        Actually, Olga, you might also want to have a look at the TV series, Penny Dreadful.   Skyfall/SPECTRE director, Sam Mendes, and Skyfall/SPECTRE writer, John Logan, are producers/writers on the series: and help make it — quite probably — one of the best things I’ve seen for a while.   (And you’re right … The various factions in the Chess world can be … complicated.)

Thanks Paul. I remember Sam Mendes from his era in the Donmar Warehouse and of course from his movies. I've heard good things about Penny Dreadful (from a Spanish writer too, so I guess it's available there somewhere) just need to find a bit of time...:)
