The Daily Teaser — 8-10-2015

Right …

THAT seemed to have worked …

I mentioned, yesterday, that I needed reminding about setting my timers.

Happily, I managed to remember.

And managed to record last night’s episode of Dr Who.

I’m probably not going to catch it, until tonight: and frankly … ?

Well, frankly, I’m looking forward to it.

AFTER my family have gotten back from my Uncle Brian’s birthday do.

What with one thing and another … ?

I’m THINKING I’ve had a busy weekend … !

~≈†≈~

But let’s get moving on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw both Debbi* and Olga† putting in their answers: both scoring ten out of ten in the process.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 8th November, 1965 saw the start of a US military operation: called Operation Hump.   During which war?
Q2) 8th November, 1990, saw the people of Ireland elect their first female President: Mary Robinson.   Who, in 1997, became Ireland’s second female President?
Q3) Manolis Andronoikos discovered the tomb of Phillip 2nd of Macedon: on 8th November, 1977.   Phillip was the father of which famous great: Aristotle, Alexander the Great or Leonidas of Sparta?
Q4) Montana was admitted as the 41st State of the USA: on the 8th November, 1889.   What’s the most widely spoken language in Montana?
Q5) Finally … 8th November, 1895, saw William Röntgen discover what’s now called x-rays.   Röntgen received the first Nobel Prize for Physics, as a result.   In which year?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 7th November, 1996, saw NASA launch its Mars Global Surveyor: NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space … what?
Q2) More to the point … the Surveyor was launched from NASA’s Cape Canaveral Airbase: in which US state is Cape Canaveral?
A2) Florida.   (Apparently, it’s separated from the nearby Merritt Island by the Banana River.   Well … it made me smile … )
Q3) Moving on, slightly … in which year did the Mars Global Surveyor reach Mars: 1997, 1998, or 1999?
A3) 1997.
Q4) Mars, of course is known as the what planet: red, white or blue?
A4) The Red planet.
Q5) More to point, name either of Mars’ moons.
A5) Phobos and Deimos.   (The names mean ‘Fear’ and ‘Terror’, in English: the two moons were named for the Roman God of War’s two sons.   Mars also has a daughter called Clancy.)
Q6) The highest known mountain on any planet in the Solar System is on Mars.   What’s its name: Tartarus Mons, Chronus Mons or Olympus Mons?
Q7) More to the point … Is that mountain a volcano: yes or no?
A7) Yes: it’s what’s called a shield volcano.
Q8) While we’re being Martian … science fiction classic, War Of The Worlds, was all about a Martian invasion of Earth.   Which English wirter wrote that novel?
Q9) Which 2012 film told us all about the adventures of John Carter of Mars?
A9) John Carter.   (Pay attention, everyone … )
Q10) And finally … Bugs Bunny cartoon, Haredevil Hare, saw the first appearance of which cartoon character: Martin the Martian, Marvin the Martian or Michelle the Martian?
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“Lolling around libraries paging through books that haven’t been checked out since 1975 is one of my principal joys as a writer.”

Ben Bova, born 8th November, 1932.
And this tune …

Have a good day …

*        One of these days, Debbi, I SWEAR, I’ll have YouTube figured out … !

†        It only goes to show, Olga, the Solar System’s a big old place … !   And, yes, the film wasn’t the best Bond on the block: but still quite good.   Here’s my write up … !
