Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18th October, 2018

18th October, 2018.

Hmmm …

I was going to do my usual thing.

Tell you about the earworm that’s wondering around my head.

Except it seems to have wondered off: without actually telling me what it is.

Shame, that …

In other news?

Apparently, Google are to shut down their Google+ social network.

Party because it gets comparatively little use compared to other such networks.

But partly because of a big data breach.

I’m …

Hmmm …

I’m not sure how I feel about that.

As far as I can tell, my data’s safe.

But I can appreciate people will not be happy.

I’m worried, though: as — as far as I can tell — clicking that G+ button has a small but noticeable effect on the amount of hits this blog gets.

We’ll have to see what happens, won’t we?

Just as a couple of points?

Can someone tell me to lay of the massive, multiplayer online roleplaying games?

Oh, and Michael Caine’s written a memoir …

Ho hum …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five, and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 18th October is World what Day?
Q2) The first cat to be sent into space was sent on 18th October, 1963.   By which European country?
Q3) Lord Alec Douglas Home became Prime Minister on 18th October, 1963.   He was the most recent member of what to be PM?
Q4) Carlo Gambino, the late Mafia boss, was buried on 18th October, 1976.  The Gambino crime family, the group he led, was headquartered in which city?
Q5) Finally … ?   18 October, 1870, saw the birth of Daisetsu Suzuki.   Suzuki mostly wrote about various forms of what: Shintoism, Buddhism or Christianity?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 17th October is the feast day of Saint Ignatius of Antioch.   He’s usually depicted either in chains … or surrounded by which big cat?
A1) Lion.
Q2) The 17th is ALSO the International Day for the Eradication of … what?
A2) Poverty.
Q3) 17th October, 2018, sees which country legalise the recreational use of cannabis …
A3) Canada.
Q4) Johannes Kepler spotted a new stellar object, on 17th October, 1604: in the constellation of Ophiuchus.   What WAS that object?
A4) A supernova.
Q5) Finally … the London Beer Flood happened on 17th October, 1814.   The brewery the flood started at has long since gone.   What theatre now stands on the site?
A5) The Dominion.   (I worked there as an usher: MANY moons ago!)
Here’s a thought …
“Enlightenment is like everyday consciousness but two inches above the ground.”
Daisetsu Suzuki, 18 October 1870 – 12 July 1966.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        It sounds about right, Olga.   These things are  all about who you know!   All about a — metaphorical — Masonic handshake, or old boys network!   I’m also aware that — in one or two interviews I saw — Terry Pratchett called literary fiction just another genre.   I think John Updike would agree with him … !   (€600, 000?   That’s about £500, 000!   That’d pay for Christmas!)

†        At my height, Debbi?   Low isn’t in it!   :D.  Oh, I don’t know if you noticed … ?   But we got a tweet from Katie Manning!!!!!!!!   (That’s made my week: and can go with the tweets I got from William Gibson, Nile Rodgers and Sue Perkins … !)

Q1) Menopause Day (not sure it deserves a Word day but, hey…)
Q2) France (poor Félicette. Survived the flight to be killed three months later).
Q3) The House of Lords
Q4) New York
Q5) Buddhism
Yes, indeed. Or perhaps literary fiction is fiction that does not fit into any given genre (and you normally cannot explain in a few words only). Oh, it is the hell of a lot of money, the Premio Planeta, but then, I guess they are paying to secure their own investment. I've already received e-mails asking me if I wanted to book a copy of the winner of the award).
