Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 9th August 2023.

9th August, 2023.

Right …

You’ll be very away I caught the 1984, Threads, the other day.

It’s a great piece: but also one of the most harrowing things I think I’ve seen.

I don’t think I could see anything worse.

But?

The director of Threads — Mick Jackson — also directed a piece for the 1980s documentary series, QED: called “A Guide to Armageddon”.

I saw it, last night: as it was on YouTube.

That copy looks like it’s been transferred to computer from an old fashioned VHS tape: then uploaded to YouTube from there.

Either way … ?

It’s … unnerving.

Unnerving: especially Ludovic Kennedy’s blandly matter-of-fact narration.

Narration that informs us the top of the range bomb shelters … would only keep you safe if that were some four and a half miles from the nearest blast.

Narration informs us not everyone could afford those premium shelters.

And narration that makes life in a bomb shelter … sound a lot worse that the actual bomb …

I’m glad a bomb hasn’t dropped.

I convinced one won’t: and that we’re more likely to kill ourselves with climate change.

But?

I’m very aware some countries — including the UK — have weapons they can use.

That’s a pleasant thought, isn’t it … ?

On a lighter note: one you’re possibly glad to see me move to … ?

Yes: my nephew was over, yesterday: and getting rather good at editing videos.

Or, at least, adding sound effects to his gaming videos.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        9th August, 1971, saw Prime Minister Brian Faulkner introduce Internment into his region.     Faulkner was Prime Minister of where: Malta, Northern Ireland or the UK?

Q2)        Pete Thomas was born on 9th August, 1954.   He played for for Elvis Costello And the Attractions: drums, bass or guitar?

Q3)        9th August is the International Day of the World’s what: Endangered Animals, Indigenous Peoples or Literacy.

Q4)        9th August saw the birth of singer, Whitney Houston.   In which year of the 1960s?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Rapper, Kurtis Walker was born: on 9th August, 1959.   He’s better known how: Kurtis Mayfield, Kurtis Blow or Curtis Stigers?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        8th August is the feast day of Saint Severus of Vienne.   This particular Vienne is in which French speaking country?
A1)        France.

Q2)        8th August is also the feast day of Saint Dominic.   He’s the patron saint of whom: astronomers, mathematicians or biologists?
A2)        Astronomers.

Q3)        The signing of the Anglo-Afghan Treaty — on 8th August, 1919 — established the Durand Line.   The line marks the border between what’s now Afghanistan: and where?
A3)        Pakistan.

Q4)        James 4th of Scotland married Margaret Tudor: on 8th August, 1503.   Margaret was the daughter of which English king: Henry 6th, Henry 7th or Henry 8th?
A4)        Henry 7th.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Great Train Robbery took place: in the early morning of 8th August, 1963.     The train in question was going from Glasgow to which London station: Euston Station, Liverpool Street Station or King’s Cross-Saint Pancras Station?
A5)        Euston Station.

Here’s a thought …
“You’ve got to know who you are before you step into this business, because if you’re trying to find it, you’ll probably wind up being somebody else, that you probably don’t even like.”
Whitney Houston, August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        That definitely sounds like Oscar, Olga!   He had a way with words!   There’s even a line or two from Dorothy Parker about that;
If, with the literate, I am
Impelled to try an epigram,
I never seek to take the credit;
We all assume that Oscar said it.
At any rate … ?   The call’s been rescheduled for next Monday.   And I’m just finishing another letter to my GP about it.   Here’s hoping!

        Hello, Mum!

‡        Ah HA!   Sounds like raiding the BBC Sounds site could be an idea, Debbi!   Check out Just A Minute and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue, while you’re there!
Oh, I was just looking up René Auberjonois: so I could leave a comment on a YouTube video.   Turns out The man was a distant relative of Napoleon Bonaparte!

Dorothy Parker was very witty indeed. I do love her poem about suicide, and I must admit to having to control myself sometimes when some of my patients with personality disorder would talk about suicide, not to quote it to them...
Good luck with the letter and the call!
