Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 8th August 2023

8th August, 2023.

Yay!

It’s Tuesday!

Why?

Because it’s the day after Monday.

But you’d worked that out, already, hadn’t you … ?

At any rate … ?

I’m baby-sitting my nephew, this afternoon.

And planning on a letter to my GP: to see what help she, or the surgery, can offer for my PIP claim.

After I missed the call from the Social Prescriber!

We’ll have to see what we can do …

~≈fi≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

The day also saw Trevor¶ leaving us an (accidentally deleted!) message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        8th August is the feast day of Saint Severus of Vienne.   This particular Vienne is in which French speaking country?

Q2)        8th August is also the feast day of Saint Dominic.   He’s the patron saint of whom: astronomers, mathematicians or biologists?

Q3)        The signing of the Anglo-Afghan Treaty — on 8th August, 1919 — established the Durand Line.   The line marks the border between what’s now Afghanistan: and where?

Q4)        James 4th of Scotland married Margaret Tudor: on 8th August, 1503.   Margaret was the daughter of which English king: Henry 6th, Henry 7th or Henry 8th?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Great Train Robbery took place: in the early morning of 8th August, 1963.   The train in question was going from Glasgow to which London station: Euston Station, Liverpool Street Station or King’s Cross-Saint Pancras Station?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Countess Elisabeth Bathory was born on 7th August.   Of which year of the 1560s?
A1)        1560.

Q2)        She was born in Nyírbátor, in what’s now, where: Hungary, Romania or Macedonia?
A2)        Hungary.   (She was born in what’s now Hungary. But the family she married into — the Nadasdy family — had estates in what’s now Slovakia: which is where she committed her crimes.)

Q3)        Many will tell you Bathory was a what: serial killer, paedophile or informer?
A3)        Serial killer.

Q4)        She was said to bath in the blood of what: virgins, nuns or mothers?
A4)        Virgins.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Bathory was arrested — on various charges — in which year: 1611, 1612 or 1613?
A5)        1612.

Here’s a thought …
“The best advice I ever got was from Robert Altman, who said, ‘Kid, I’m going to give you a piece of advice.   Don’t take advice from anybody’.”
Keith Carradine, born August 8, 1949.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        I caught the Anna Friel movie about her, Olga.   It’s an interesting watch, from what I can remember: but her hairdo — on the poster — looked unflattering!
The Countess, herself, usually gets a mention whenever Vlad Tepes — Dracula! — is discussed.   I think they’re supposed to be distantly related: but don’t quote me!
Now you mention it … ?   I think there’s something similar, here: grants for courses, I should say.   It all depends on if I qualify.   We’ll have to see what they say.
Threads is worth the effort, I think.   But I think watching it pregnant wouldn’t necessary be a good idea: the main character is expecting when the bomb drops§.    As for Sheffield … ?   From what I’ve learnt, the BBC filmed it in parts of the town that were due to be demolished.   They could get away with a lot …
About the Warhol/Basquiat picture?   It’s given me an earworm …

        Hello, Mum!

Actually, Debbi, the TV show’s not the first version: that was the radio version, on Radio Four.   I don’t know if it’s on BBC Sounds: but it might be worth a look.
It’s not: I’ve just checked for you!   There’s a CD version on the UK Amazon: at an eyewatering price.   You would be able to import it into iTunes/Music.app, though.

Sorry, Trevor, I hit the wrong button!   At any rate, I got the scores corrected.

§        To be honest, Olga?   I mentioned watching it in a couple of Facebook, Discworld groups I’m in.   The reaction from the woman who’d been pregnant whilst watching … was sad to hear, was genuinely distressing.

Love the earworm (although I hope it doesn't become an earworm for me as well) and today's quote. It reminded me of Oscar Wilde, who said something like: The only thing you can do with good advice is pass it on. You should never use it yourself.
Shame about missing the phone call. I hope the GP has some ideas of how to help.

Ah! You see we didn't get BBC Radio here. Back then. So I have no fond memories of that.

I owe a lot to public television when it comes to the BBC. :)

But I think it's awesome that it started on the radio. Like a podcast, only a very different method of delivery. :)

1. France
2. astronomers
3. Pakistan
4. Henry 7th
5. Euston Station

I should probably give the remake another chance at some point. Because I do like the actors. So ... maybe. :)
