29th August, 2023: Electromagnetic Induction.
Yay!
It’s Tuesday … !
Which basically means I’ll be looking after my nephew, this afternoon.
Which should be fun.
~≈fi≈~
I also know something else: yesterday was the day the lady who lived upstairs, moved out.
Granted, we had a rocky time of it, at times.
Especially when her youngest boy had a full sized trampoline!
But … ?
She, and her family, moved out, yesterday: to a council bungalow, ’round the corner.
I’ll miss them, I know her kids will have a garden to enjoy: but wonder who we’ll get next.
There’s a whole batch of possibilities.
Let’s move on, shall we?
Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.
Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?
Q1) Electromagnetic induction was discovered on 29th August. 29th August of which year: 1831, 1832 or 1833?Q2) It was discovered by whom: Michael Faraday, Isaac Newton or Albert Einstein?Q3) Electromagnetic induction can be used in a pick-up. A pick-up can be found, where: an electric guitar, a acoustic guitar or a xylophone?Q4) Electromagnetic induction is what happens when you move a magnet, or a magnetic field, through a conductor. When you do, you generate an emf, an electromotive what: force, fluid or fission?Q5) Finally … ? Electro magnetic induction is used in the generators that supply what to our homes: gas, electricity or water?
Q1) 28th August is the feast day of Saint Hermes. He’s traditionally prayed to, for help with what: sexual diseases, broken bones or mental illness?Q2) The saint shares his name with the Greek god, Hermes. Hermes was the what of the gods: messenger, gate guard or butler?A2) Messenger.Q3) Hermès is a luxury goods company. From which European country?A3) France.Q4) In J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels, Hermes is owned by Percy Weasley. Hermes, in this case, is a what: eagle, vulture or owl?A4) An owl.Q5) Finally … ? There’s been ten ships called the HMS Hermes. They’ve been part of which country’s navy?
Here’s an observation …
“The emf generated by [the discoverer’s] law of induction due to relative movement of a circuit and a magnetic field is the phenomenon underlying electrical generators.”From the Wikipedia entry on electromagnetic induction.
And a song by an appropriately named band …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* Hello, Mum! (It’s the UK’s navy, Mum, not Great Britain’s!)
† Mum’s got a wooden carving of an owl, Olga: something I picked up for her in Camden Market. And, yes: ‘Great Britain’ excludes Northern Ireland. I’m always careful about Northern Ireland’s name: calling it ‘Ulster’ can be problematic.
I hope you had an umbrella!
‡ It’s a hell of a lot of Bernard, Debbi! The upcoming specials are his last work: he died not long after filming them.
Oh, did I mention this video? It’s fascinating stuff … !

I haven't counted how many owls I have. Perhaps I'll do that on a rainy day.
We did have umbrellas, and I had one of those thin waterproof jackets that fold into a small bag, the problem was that it got quite chilly and I was wearing sandals, so my feet were not happy. (I thought about wearing something else, but the only waterproof footware I have is wintery and quite heavy...
I hope you enjoy your nephew's visit.

Alien fashion? Speaking of, I've always loved Tom Baker's scarf and hat as the Doctor!
And Romana's ... presence! :)
