Penny Dreadful: City of Angels — Series 1 Episode 7 — Maria and the Beast — A Review

7th June, 2020.

Yes: I have been stuck indoors!

Waiting for a boiler repair man.

Long story: but basically?

The thermostat’s gone home!

I hate being stuck indoors … but sometimes, you can’t avoid it.

At any rate … ?

At least I could catch some TV.

You’re right.

Another episode of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels’s first series.

Episode 7 — Maria and the Beast — opens with a summary of last week’s episode: then moves on.

Showing us Maria Vega (Adriana Barraza) catch the bus to her job as Dr Craft’s (Rory Kinnear) …

And spotting the grim silhouette of Magda (Natalie Dormer), the bus passes the graveyard.

Little knowing that Elsa (Natalie Dormer), an avatar of Magda, moves in with Dr Craft.

Meanwhile?   Sister Molly (Kerry Bishé) visits Tiago (Daniel Zovatto) at his apartment: while Detective Michener and Dottie (Lin Shaye) meet with Brian (Kyle McArthur).

They’re hoping to persuade him not to help the Nazis designer a rocket.

Later that night, however?   Maria has an argument with her daughter, Josefina (Jessica Garza): as Jessica seems to be abandoning the family’s traditional Catholic faith.

It’s only when Josefina walks out?   That Maria decides she needs help from Santa Muerte, herself.

It’s also late that night … ?   That Detective Michener calls in a favour from Tiago: Lewis needs help of a less supernatural kind.

The pair go Nazi hunting …

Only to find the local Nazi representative in LA is very friendly with Councilman Townsend (Michael Gladis) …

And even friendlier with Adelaide Finnister (Amy Madigan).

Sister Molly’s mother …

Now … you’ll excuse me for rushing, I hope: but I really want to hit the sack!

But you’re asking, aren’t you?

‘Paul,’ you’re asking, ‘what did you make of Maria and the Beast?’

It’s another stinker of an episode.

Nathan Lane owned How It Is With Brothers: absolutely dominated the episode.

Maria and the Beast, on the other hand?

Again sees Lane making the most of his scenes: but also give room for Daniel Zovatto exercise his chops, especially in that opening scene with Kerry Bishé.

But frankly?

I have to give the episode both to Adriana Barraza as Maria: you could see her distrust of Elsa … and her hatred of Madga.

She played a blinder in tonight’s episode: in particular, when aiming that rage against the two Natalie Dormer.

That scene?   Really is something to watch: and helps make a suitable climax to the episode.

There’s something else that had me riveted in this episode.

The soundtrack!

Usually?   I don’t focus on a show’s soundtrack.

But, to be honest … ?

John Paesano’s been doing one hell of a job for the past few weeks: managing, in Maria and the Beast, to cover noir detective motifs for Michener, menacing for Magda, restrained rage for Maria …

Frankly?

It’s giving me another reason to come back for next week’s episode.

Equally frankly?

I’ll see you then … !
“There is a reason windows have curtains,”
Maria Vega. (Adriana Barraza)
