Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 11-2-2023 — UKSF.

11th February: UKSF.

Yay!

It’s Saturday!

He says.

Perfectly aware that he has nothing to do: bar job hunting … and finishing reviewing the last episode of The Crusade.

That’s going to take a while, I think: there’s possibly a lot to unpack!

~≈Ü≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on two.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)         The world’s first science fiction show was broadcast on the BBC: on 11th February, 1938.   The show was a version of RUR, by Karel Čapek.   What word did the play introduce to English: robot, rascal or revolver?

Q2)         More to the point, Karel Čapek was from what’s now, where: Slovenia, Serbia or the Czech Republic?

Q3)         1949 saw the BBC do a live version of which H. G. Wells story: The Invisible Man, The Time Machine or The Sleeper Awakes?

Q4)         Reginald Tate, André Morell and Jason Flemyng, have all played a fictional British rocket scientist.   Which fictional British rocket scientist?

Q5)         Finally … ?   Joanna Lumley and David McCallum played the main characters in which ITV series: Dr Who, Sapphire and Steel or The Nightmare Man?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)         10th February is the Feast of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck.   Where: Malta, Sicily or Corsica?
A1)         Malta.

Q2)         President Eisenhower warned against US intervention: on 10th February, 1954.   Intervention, where: Vietnam, Korea or Taiwan?
A2)         Vietnam.   (That worked!)

Q3)         The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified on 10th February, 1967.   By which US state?
A3)         Nevada.

Q4)         Lon Chaney Jr was born on 10th February, 1906.   He played Larry Talbot in which 1941 film: The Wild Man of Borneo, The Wolf Man or A Woman’s Face?
A4)         The Wolf Man.

Q5)         Finally … ?   10th February, 1941, saw the birth of director, Michael Apted.   What was the name of the only James Bond film he directed: Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough or Die Another Day?
A5)         The World Is Not Enough.
Here’s a thought …
“British television science fiction refers to popular programmes in the genre that have been produced by both the BBC and Britain’s largest commercial channel, ITV.”
From the Wikipedia entry on British SF TV.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!   (It was Nevada, Vietnam and The World Is Not Enough!)

Yeah: I know there’s complications, Olga.   I’ve got a hernia, as well, which needs dealing with, so that would have to be factored in!   Out side that, I think the recovery time’s an issue!
Wish you friend’s daughter Good Luck, for me: how long IS the exhibition … ?

‡        You should see Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton and Wendy Padbury, Debbi: they’re hysterical!   Actually, now I think of it?   They’d be ideal as Granny, Nanny and Magrat!

Q1) robot

Q2) the Czech Republic

Q3) The Time Machine

Q4) Professor Bernard Quatermass

Q5) Sapphire and Steel
Thanks, Paul. Keep me posted on the surgery front. It all depends on the technique they decide to use, but they might be able to deal with the hernia at the same time...
The opening went well. The exhibition will last until the 24th of March, so plenty of time to catch up on it. She did a lot of dance and sports photography and hopes to do an exhibition of those pictures later in the year, so we shall see. They are all very good, especially because she took him during the pandemic with her mobile.
