Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1st December 2024.

1st December, 2024.

It’s a Sunday morning.

And?

I’ve got Radio 4’s Sunday programme on in the background: telling us how many diaspora churches — churches where many immigrant communities worship — are having trouble finding venues to worship in …

Despite many churches in Scotland having buildings going begging!

At any rate … ?

The church around the corner from me rents out its building of a Sunday afternoon: to something called Brentwood Tamil Church.

I know that, because — during its evening services — it has a volunteer over the road: holding up a sign that says something on the lines of “Jesus Saves!”

It’s not something that encourages me to visit: nor many others.

But … ?

Well … I have to give them credit for persistence!

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Debbi† and Olga‡ putting in their answers: with Debbi and Olga scoring ten out of ten, and Mum on nine.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        1st December, 1963, saw which state become part of India: Assam, Tamil Nadu or Nagaland?

Q2)        1st December is Sovereignty Day, where: Iceland, Greenland or the Faroe Islands?

Q3)        The first law allowing same sex marriage in Africa passed: on 1st December, 2006.    Where: South Africa, Eswatini or Zimbabwe?

Q4)        The COVID-19 Pandemic started on 1st December, 2019.   In which Chinese city: Beijing, Wuhan or Chongqing?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Arecibo Telescope collapsed: on 1st December, 2020.   The Telescope had been where: Cuba, American Samoa or Puerto Rico?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Director, Ridley Scott, was born on 30th November.   Of which year of the 1930s?
A1)        1937.

Q2)        His first film as director was 1977’s The Duellists.   The Duellists was based on a novel by whom: Joseph Conrad, Walter Scott or Isaac Asimov?
A2)        Joseph Conrad.

Q3)        Scott directed the 1984 advert.   For whom: Apple, Google, Microsoft or Facebook?
A3)        Apple.

Q4)        That ad first aired, during what: the 1984 UEFA Euro Final, the last game of the 1984 World Series, or the 1984 Super Bowl?
A4)        1984 Super Bowl.

Q5)        Scott directed the 1979 science fiction film, Alien.   Who directed the sequel, Aliens: Ridley Scott, James Cameron or David Fincher?
A5)        James Cameron.

Q6)        Scott described 1982’s Blade Runner as his most personal film.   Who played the blade runner, in Blade Runner: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford or Carrie Fisher?
A6)        Harrison Ford.   Hauer’s Tears In Rain speech is an iconic film moment.   Blade Runner, along side Gibson’s Neuromancer, are generally considered the basis of the Cyberpunk genre.

Q7)        Scott’s Legend starred Tom Cruise as Jack.   Who played the Lord of Darkness, in Legend: Tim Curry, Liam Neeson or Mark Wing-Davey?
A7)        Tim Curry.   (As I recall? Tim Curry’s supposed to have said his make up made him look like two hundred pounds of condemned tandoori.   I wish I could find a source for that!)

Q8)        But for a scheduling conflict, Ridley Scott could have designed an iconic Doctor Who creature: but didn’t.   Which creature: Daleks, Cybermen or Ice Warriors?
A8)        Daleks.   (I’m not sure why Scott couldn’t do the job: but he couldn’t do the job.   Raymond Cusick got the gig, instead: and designed an icon.)

Q9)        Scott’s Thelma and Louise was released in which year of the 1990s?
A9)        1991.

Q10)        Finally … ?   Ridley Scott directed Gladiator.   Who played Maximus Decimus Meridius, the Gladiator of the title?
A10)        Russell Crowe.   (The real star of the show was Oliver Reed!)
Here’s a thought …
“There’s an old saying among actors: “Never be the third man through the door,” and I felt I would always be the third man in that role.” Malachi Throne, December 1, 1928 – March 13, 2013, speaking on auditioning for Star Trek.
And a song …

The next ten question set is on 3rd December, 2024.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum: see you later!

†        Politics is messy, isn’t it Debbi … ?   Apparently, there’s now a petition: calling for another general election.   Ho-bloody-hum … !   And Scott-designed Daleks could’ve been something … !

‡        I keep meaning to read Heart of Darkness, Olga: that’s floated across my timeline so many times …
That old line of Sir Terry’s always comes to mind, when I think about assisted dying: “My life, my death, my choice”.   Either way … ?   The discussion provokes discussion.
And, yes, Scott-designed Daleks would have been something to see.   I don’t think H. R. Giger — the man who designed the alien for Scott’s Alien — was around back then.   That could’ve been another interesting look!

Necronom IV, H. R. Giger

You are right. That would have been interesting to see. Alien's monster is awesome. Well, the whole look of the film is.

Politics is quite messy. Back in 1972, I was a volunteer for the McGovern campaign.

You can imagine how I felt about Nixon winning a second term. Now, I have no idea who or what to believe half the time. :)

Where's Orwell when you need him? :)

I know. He was talking about his time. That's what scares me! :) Well, that and a few other things ... lol
