Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 3-12-2024 — Berkshire

3rd December, 2024: Berkshire.

I’m officially getting old!

I saw a movie, on Sunday night: 1980s Hazel O’Connor vehicle, Breaking Glass.

And published both written and video versions of my review, fairly late.

This morning … ?

I find myself feeling bloody knackered: as a result of finishing the video version incredibly late.

Or, at least, more tired than I would’ve felt, ten years ago!

I’m getting old!

~≈🥱≈~

Oh … yesterday’s weight management meeting went well enough: I’ve lost weight.

Not much weight: but a nod’s as good as a wink to a blind bat.

Or horse, cat, herring, banana, what have you!

The unfortunate thing?

Was that blood test I had afterwards.

It was a dead loss: that I’ve had to rebook.

I’d not drunk enough fluids for the phlebotomist to be able to do her job!

~≈🩸≈~

Elon Musk is lovely, and I want to fondle him.

Please insert a lot of irony into that statement!

Elon Musk is … probably several things: including all sorts of unprintable things.

But … ?

He’s got ministers thinking.

As Elon’s announced he wants to donate some $100, 000, 000 to Nigel Farage’s Reform party, ministers are now thinking of introducing a cap — or, at least, tightening caps — on foreign donations to British political parties.

Elon could probably, very easily, get around that: by setting up dummy companies, giving them money, and telling them to make a donation for him.

But … ?

In considering these caps, the government is at least showing it wants to be seen to be doing something!

~≈🤑≈~

I’ve JUST had a call from my landlords.

They’ll be sending a carpenter around on Friday, to do some work on my bathroom!

Yay!

~≈🚿≈~

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s ten questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        3rd December is the feast day of Saint Birinus: the patron saint of Berkshire.   He’s also the patron saint of where: Dorchester, Devon or Doncaster?

Q2)        Berkshire, itself?   Has no county council: as Berkshire Country Council was abolished in which year of the 1990s?

Q3)        Modern Berkshire is made up of how many district councils: six, eight or ten … ?

Q4)        Those councils applied to become a combined authority.   In which year: 2022, 2023 or 2024?

Q5)        What’s Berkshire’s county town: Newbury, Reading or Sandhurst?

Q6)        The county is the Royal County of Berkshire.    Because it contains which royal residence: Windsor Castle, Balmoral or Osbourne House?

Q7)        ‘Berk’ is derived from the term ‘Berkshire hunt’.   It’s an obscure piece of what: rhyming slang, back slang or polari?   (Careful!)

Q8)        Ascot, Windsor and Newbury are in Berkshire.   Ascot, Windsor and Newbury what: racecourses, motor racing circuits or snooker halls?

Q9)        Berkshire-based AFC Newbury were one of only two English football teams sponsored by Vodaphone.   Who was the other: Liverpool, Manchester United or Everton?

Q10)        Finally … ?   The Prince of Wales, and the Duke of Sussex, both went to a well known school in Berkshire.   Which school?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        2nd December is the National Day of Laos.   It marks the end of the country’s monarchy, and the day it became a republic. In which year of the 1970s?
A1)        1975.

Q2)        Channing Moore Williams’ feast is marked on 2nd December.   By whom: Anglican christians, Roman Catholic christians or Serbian Orthodox christians?
A2)        Anglican christians.   (Apparently, he helped set up the Anglican Church in Japan.   Which is nice …)

Q3)        LaGuardia Airport opened on 2nd December, 1939.   It’s in which east coast US city?
A3)        New York.

Q4)        President James Monroe announced his Monroe Doctrine on 2nd December, 1823.   The Doctrine says the USA will oppose whose colonies in the Western Hemisphere: Europe’s, Asia’s or the Middle East’s?
A4)        Europe.

Q5)        Finally … ?   And many years later?   2nd December, 1954, saw President Dwight D. Eisenhower sign a defence treaty with what’s now where: Malaysia, Taiwan or the Azores?
A5)        Taiwan.   (As Taiwan’s not in Europe …)
Here’s a thought …
“The Royal County of Berkshire, commonly known as simply Berkshire, is a ceremonial county in South East England.”
From the Wikipedia entry on the county.
A song by someone from Berkshire …

And an earworm …

The next ten question set is on 8th December.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        It’s seriously worth a read, Olga.   The version I have include’s Orwell’s review of Mein Kampf.   Orwell wasn’t impressed with the thing …

        Hello, Mum!

Orwell’s one of the most quotable writers, Debbi!
Oh, about my Breaking Glass review?   You’ll probably find one familiar face …

I have found a copy online. I'll check it out when I get a chance. And good news about the weight and the phone call. I hope they can help.
