Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 11-9-2021: The Day The World Changed

11th September, 2021.

Right … it’s a Saturday morning: one that — looking out of the window — looking distinctly overcast.

Hopefully?   And much like yesterday?

I’ll avoid any potential rain.

~≈💧≈~

You know, I’m willing to bet people are going to whinge.

About money, and prices.   I know I do.

So, of course, I couldn’t help but notice the news.

3 — the mobile phone providers — are to re-introduce roaming charges to any UK customer travelling in the EU.

And that PayPal are to raise charges for UK customers, sending money to, or receiving money from, the EU area.

I’m willing to bet many who voted Leave, in the 2016 Referendum, are complaining.

“We voted for freedom,” many would say.

Well, yes.

But, from the little I’ve understood?

It also means a lack of food on the shelves: because there’s a lack of European lorry drivers living in the UK.

And prices going up: because dealing with Europe mean paying extra charges.

Frankly?

We should have stayed in.

And should maybe rejoin.

Frankly, anything that put prices down is a good thing.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Trevor†, Mum‡ and Debbi^ putting in their answers: Olga, Trevor and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        The Nine Eleven terrorist attacks took place: on 11th September, 2001.   When hijacked planes were flown into which US landmark: the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, or the World Trade Centre?

Q2)        That landmark was in which US city?

Q3)        The HQ of the US Department of Defence was also hit by a plane.   That HQ is the what: Pentagon, Hexagon or Heptagon?

Q4)        The attack was carried out by al-Qaeda.   At the time al-Qaeda were based where: Afghanistan, South African or Libya?

Q5)        Finally … ?   There were four planes involved in the attack: the last of which crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.   Where was that plane said to have been heading for: New York, Los Angeles or Washington DC?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        10th September is the Feast Day of Saint Nicholas of Tolentino.   He’s a patron saint of where: Portugal, Spain or France.
A1)        Spain.   (Despite being born in what’s now Italy …)

Q2)        Dame Diana Rigg died on 10th September, 2020.   She played Olenna Tyrell in which TV series: Dr Who, Game of Thrones or The Avengers?
A2)        Game of Thrones.

Q3)        The Lesser Judgement Day struck Constantinople on 10th September, 1509.   What was The Lesser Judgement Day: an earthquake, a volcanic eruption or a meteor strike?
A3)        An earthquake.

Q4)        The Large Hadron Collider was first used: on 10th September, 2008.   The collider is an experimental what: nuclear fusion generator, quark detector or particle collider?
A4)        A particle collider.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Which neutral country joined the United Nations.   On 10th September, 2002: Rwanda, Switzerland or Turkmenistan … ?
A5)        Switzerland.
Here’s a thought …
“We have entered the third millennium through a gate of fire. If today, after the horror of 11 September, we see better, and we see further – we will realise that humanity is indivisible.”
Kofi Annan, speaking at his Nobel Lecture in 2001.
And a video …

And a final thought.

It’s twenty years after the attacks took place.   Twenty whole years.

The shock of seeing planes being deliberately driven into buildings?   Has still not faded.

Neither has my memories of my reaction to seeing the news footage.

“Christ, I hope that’s locals,” I thought.

“I hope that’s some idiots from the Michigan Militia.   Because if that’s some religious nutters in the Middle East, there’s going to be hell to pay.”

I was wrong.   It wasn’t local.

I was right.   Hell was paid …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        It went well enough, Olga: although I had to make sure they put a couple of things on the record.   And, obviously, I had my shades with me: you need them, after this sort of test!
You know … I’ve never thought of getting bifocals: I’ll have to possibly think about it.

        Looks rather good, Trevor.
By the way, Trevor, is everything OK with the laptop … ?   I saw the post.   Have you got everything backed up … ?   And you DO know you can comment through the phone … ?

        Hello, Mum!

^        It’s spelt Cthulhu, Debbi.   You have to love Lovecraft’s naming conventions, don’t you?

Q1) The World Trade Centre

Q2) New York

Q3) The Pentagon

Q4) Afghanistan

Q5) I got a bit confused when I first read this, as I thought you meant what was the flight’s original destination (San Francisco), but then I realised you meant where the terrorist wanted it to crash. It was going towards Washington DC. It is suspected that they wanted to crash it either on the White House or the Capitol. I watched the movie about it, at the cinema, when it came out, and it was odd, because even knowing what it was going to happen, I thought it worked very well at all levels.
They call them intermediates, because you don't use for long-distance (mine is getting worse, but not at a level that requires glasses, yet), but they told me that now that a lot of people had been working at home and more people spent time at the computer, there was a greater need for this, because if you use the reading glasses when you are watching the screen, you end up causing more damage to your long-distance sight.
