I caught a TV show, last night: the first episode of Big Bang Theory spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

The jury’s out, at the moment.

But … ?

It’s very well done, there’s a lot of money on screen … and no canned laughter.

Which is a little disorienting … !

I’m something of a technology fan: at least, I try and pay attention to technology news.

So I saw the news that Microsoft’s introduced what it calls a Migration App*, with a certain amount of interest.

The app allows people who’ve bough a new, Windows 11, PC to import over their passwords, settings and apps from a Windows 10 machine, into their new Windows 11 machine.

Something they’ve not made available since the migration from Windows Vista to Windows 7, many years ago.

Apple introduced its own Migration Assistant, many years ago: around 2011

And even before then, this sort of transfer was easy enough to do, through what was called Target Disk Mode.

I’ve used both.

I also helped my nephew sync his Chromebook to his phone, at Christmas.   It had a similar set of apps in place.

So … ?

I’m vaguely surprised at Microsoft: for introducing this technology for Windows Vista and Windows 7, then removing it, then re-introducing it now.

When, maybe, they should have kept the technology in place.

If you want to encourage people to stick with your product, making it easy to transfer data and settings makes sense!

Frankly, I’m enjoying — ha! — the various laxatives I’m having to take: in the run up to next Tuesday’s colonoscopy.

I would get sarcastic … just not with these bowels!

Was spending time with my nephew, Jude, yesterday.

He’s a bright young man, who’s suddenly developed a vague interest in politics: very vague, I think.

And a habit of putting games videos together!

Right … 

It’s now Wednesday: the day after a busy Tuesday!

Quite a bit happened, yesterday.

For a start … ?

I finally got the letter about my application for Personal Independence Payment.

It’s been turned down!

So … ?

Of course I’ve put in for a MRN, or Mandatory Reconsideration Notice: the start of an appeal, in other words.

How that will go, I don’t know.

I do know that — when I was making the call to put that through — I got a call from my GP.

With some good news.

Apparently?

My blood sugars are down.

From 57, last time, to 53, this time.   (Some seven per cent, if that’s how you measure it.)

It’s a shame the new medication hasn’t helped shift as much weight: but the blood sugars dropping?

Is good.

On top of that … ?

On top of that, my GP’s also told me the surgery has a ‘social prescriber’: someone who could help with my PIP claim.

I’m expecting a call from them, on Monday.

Quite what they can do … ?

I don’t know.

But hopefully, they should be able to help.

I’m also very aware my nephew, Jude, was over, yesterday.

Yes: we’ve done another video.

And I have to admit to a certain amount of pride, there: he edited this one, himself.

I seem to be having an effect!

It’s officially Tuesday … and that means I have nothing to do, all day.

Even though the brakes have gone on, Lockdown’s eased enough to have an afternoon out.

I’ll be able to tear my nephew for long enough to interest him in The Mandalorian!

Yes, it’s official.

I’m mightily f*cked off.

The job I was interview, recently?

And actually was told I could start, next Thursday.

Until yesterday.

When I got another call from the employer.

Apparently?

They wouldn’t accept my adoption papers as proof of my right to work in the UK.

JUST an original birth certificate.

Apparently, there was a change in legislation — about a year back — that meant I’d need to offer the birth certificate.

I was livid.

Understandably.

Especially as, at every interview I’ve had over the past six months, my adoption papers have been perfectly acceptable.

Understandably, I did a lot of frantic emailing, phoning, messaging and website checking, last night.

Firstly?   I phoned the General Registry Office, the UK’s central office for births, deaths and marriages, to see how I could order a new birth certificate.

Their advice?   They’d be happy to organise it: if I booked it online at the relevant part of their site.

But?

Buying a copy would be unneeded: as the employer was obliged to accept my adoption papers.   In the case of adopted people, these papers supersede the original birth certificate.

My sister, Anna, also found this document online: published by the Home Office.

Page 13 tells us that both birth and adoption certificates are equally acceptable proof of right to work: especially with an official document showing a National Insurance number.

I also checked the relevant section of the Government’s own website.

And got this result.

Adoption papers count as proof of right to work.

I’ve informed my work coach at the Job Centre to inform them what’s going on.

Just so he’s kept abreast.

Usually, they can fund things applications for drivers licenses, passports, and birth certificates … if needed.

But of course: the official government advice is that my birth certificate wouldn’t be required.

The adoption papers are acceptable.

The Job Centre would have trouble justifying the expense.

So I’ve emailed/phoned the manager who interviewed me: and advised them of the situation.

They’re going to be phoning me on Monday: once they’ve consulted their Human Resources department.

Do you get the feeling I’ll be having a long weekend?

I’ve got to admit to spending a frantic minutes, there: posting to Apple’s community support forums.

I’m having an issue.

For the past few hours, and using Safari 11.1.2, on a recent model iMac, running macOS High Sierra, 10.13.6?

Every time I go near Facebook, I get a message telling me “This webpage is using significant memory.   Closing it may improve your Mac’s responsiveness.”

Yes, before you ask: I’ve cleared both my caches and my history.

And no, it doesn’t happen when I use the ever reliable Firefox.

I’m blowed If I know what’s happening.

If there’s anyone out there who’s got at least half a clue, I’d appreciate hearing about it!



It’s mildly frustrating.

You’ve possibly realised — or possibly haven’t — that I’ve had a day off, today.

I’ve got a few bits done around the house.

Although less than I’d like.

One disadvantage of being single?

Is there’s no-one around to help do the chores.

To be frank, I thin I’d possibly hire a cleaner … if I had the dosh.

There is always that last bit you can’t be bothered to wipe, frankly.

At ANY rate?

I will probably have a chance to do more, tomorrow: as I’ve another day off.

Tonight?

I fancied catching something that’s been tempting me for a while.

Westworld.

The first series of the HBO series, if you’re wondering, rather than the film it takes a cue from.

Going on these two episodes?

I think tempting is the right word …

That, just recently, London was home to the London Film and Comic Con.

Which I probably couldn’t afford to have gone to unless you paid me!

But there you go.

I notice, though, the Christopher Ecclestone was there.

The man who played the Doctor for one season … who got a hug from Capaldi and Smith.

The who left … after the relationship between him and show runner, Russell T. Davies, broke down.

I don’t know about the convention … 

But I’d’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall for that first series.

Remember, yesterday, that I told you my glasses had broken?

The optician I got them from is happy tho fix the arm: but won’t be able to do so until Friday at the earliest.

Which is when they expect the delivery …

Have you been watching the news?

Then you’ve possibly seen the news that some of Facebook’s AI researchers turned off a pair of experimental chatbots.

When the things started talking … in their own dialect of English.

Apparently, people are getting worried about it: especially in the media.

Personally?

I’m one of many that still remembers reading I, Robot: and reading Asimoz’s Three Laws of Robotics.

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

He basically wrote those … ?

Because he was very aware we’re human: we like building stuff with safety features.

Including the off-button the researchers used … !
