It’s official: I’ve lost weight!

I was at my weekly weight management class — meeting? group? — yesterday: I go every Monday, so you know.

And … ?

I’ve lost one hundred grams.

About three ounces, if you want it in Imperial.

OK: that’s not as much as last week’s loss.

But … ?

It’s nice to know there’s an ongoing trend!

30th September, 2024: The Magic Flute.

Right, it’s early: or, at least, I’m up early.

It’s Monday: and, as ever, I’m up early, to get to my weight management class.

Hopefully early.

It’s been seen a host of new members, recently, so it would be nice to get to the front of the queue.

About the only down side for today’s trip?

It’s raining, out: heavily.

I hate rain!

Oh … one bit of news I’ve heard, today … ?

Singer and actor, Kris Kristofferson has died.

I didn’t know much of his work: beyond having seen him the Blade Trilogy, and The Rose, and heard Joplin’s version of “Me and Bobby McGee”.

But I can’t help but think it’s a sad thing to hear: the man was quite a talent.

Yes: it’s officially Friday.

Which means I have a quiet day: with little on, but making videos.

And possibly buying some bread.

I’ll probably leave that ’til tomorrow: that’s when I need milk.

30th September, 2021.

I’ve just had another look: and yes.

It’s raining!

Which means just one thing.

I’m going to get wet, when I pick up my meds!

You will have realised that I’m job hunting, at the moment.

Like most of us on Universal Credit, I’m getting the £20 weekly uplift to my benefits: which adds up to some eighty or so pounds a week, and that’s due to end in next week.

At least, that’s what Radio 4’s Today programme is telling me.

Apparently?   There’s a grant — called the Housing Support Fund — that’s due to be started in October.

I’ve been messaging my Job Centre case worker, and Brentwood Council, AND my councillors, to see how I apply for that.

But … ?

My basic objection to that sort of thing still remains.

A large, one off grant?   Is not as useful as the direct £20 uplift.

And, given this grant will be administered by my local council?

Sounds like it’ll be far more difficult to apply for.

I caught another episode of Lovecraft Country on Tuesday: and uploaded my video review, last night.

Can I suggest catching this episode?

It’s fantastic: Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Call of Cthulhu meets The Goonies only starts to describe it.

I have to confess, this is — quite possibly — going to be one of those posts I start tonight: on 29th September, 2020.

But may well finish, tomorrow.

In case you hadn’t guessed?

I got awakened, this morning, at just after 4 o’clock.

To find a drunk sleeping on my doorstep.

Yes: I ended up phoning the police.

Which is when my mysterious visitor decided to move on.

After swearing at me a lot.

Frankly, after all that … ?

I’m knackered: and going to bed.

But wanted to get started on this review: of what I’ve seen on TV, tonight.

Yes: I’ve seen episode two of Watchmen …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-9-2020: The Truman Show.

30th September, 2020.

Right … 

After some six hours?

My mystery visitor went.

I’d been phoning the police since he turned up at four in the morning.

He finally heard me phoning them at about ten: that was when he kicked off, making all kind of threats … 

And wondered off, after not being to get through the door.

I’m thankful.

The disappointing thing about it?

Is simply this.

The police turned up at five: and couldn’t get into the building.   Despite being told that I’d be up, and would answer the door.

I had a menacing looking drunk sleeping on my doorstep, after all.

Despite repeatedly telling me they’d be over, yesterday?   For no other reason than to pick up the photo?

The police were a no show.

I can appreciate they’re busy.

But the local police only seem interested in headline grabbing drug raids: rather than the little things.

Going totally off the subject?

You’ll have worked out by now that I’m job hunting.

And that — possibly — that I’m on Universal Credit.

I had a pay raise in April: of an unusually large amount.

Usually, any increase in benefit would be a lot smaller.

I believe — based on what I can see of the online information I get from the government — a healthy chunk of this is a result of the Covid 19 situation.

My cynical side?   Believed that I, and others, would not get another for a good two to three years.

That’s sort of been borne out: by this piece on the BBC’s new site: telling us various charities have written to the government … asking them to not reduce the payments, next April.

I hope that works.   The increased payments are bloody helpful.

I expect the letter will be ignored by a cash strapped Chancellor.

Which is a shame: that money’s handy!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-9-2019: Suleiman the Magnificent

30th September, 2019.

Yep: I’m officially back to work, tonight.

Granted: it’s only four hours,

But I’m OK with that.

It means I’m standing around for less time … 

It also means that — should certain items turn up from Amazon and Ebay — I’m more likely to be in.

What with one thing and another?

I noticed this piece on the BBC’s news site: where Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia — the country’s effective leader — denies ordering the death of journalist, Jamal Khashoggi.

Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?

But ALSO that Iran — in its support of Houthi rebels in Iran — will have a huge effect on the global oil prices.

He’d say that, too: JUST to get support.

My own personal thinking … ?

Well, I’m no policy wonk, no economics expert … 

But can’t help but think that having vehicles that aren’t reliant on petrol, a lot earlier than have been introduced?

Would have made that less of an issue …

Just as a final thought … ?

The Today programme’s covering a story: that the UK’s current Health Secretary — Matt Hancock — is considering making vaccinations compulsory.

Which is all to the good, I think.

Granted, many devout Muslims, Jews and Christian will have issues.

But it would be a helpful way of challenging vaccines deniers.

What caught me?   Was that someone on the Today programme said it would ‘provoke a democratic crisis.’

My cynical side … ?

Tells me no-one would notice …

It’s Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar’s tenth birthday!

Here: here’s that very first post.

Just in case you’re interested … 

The blog started as an advert for the pub quizzes I was running, back then.

And as a way of freely publishing the question sets I used.

Quite frankly?   There were never enough free quiz questions around that quiz masters could use.

It’s evolved, since: morphing into a site that still hands out free quiz questions, but also tells you about movies and TV shows I’ve watched, technology I’ve used, Macs*, and practically anything else that came to mind.

I’ve learnt a few things, too.

Basic HTML tags, where to find legally useable pictures, when to give up on a copyright fight.

Which is a long story.

It’s a fascinating trip, and I’m planning to keep going.

You never know what’ll happen.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30th September, 2017

*Yawn*

I think you can tell I’m tired, can’t you … ?

The yawn at the start of the post is a bit of a clue.

But … ?

Well, frankly, I got home last night: wanting to unwind with a little TV.

Frankly?

I’m hoping to try and catch some episodes of Star Trek: Discovery, the spin off in the franchise.

And everything I’ve read?   Tells me Discovery’s makers have seen the classic Star Trek episode, Balance of Terror as a major influence on their entry in the franchise.

So I watched Balance of Terror, last night.

It’s a fantastic little episode, with the sort of downbeat ending you don’t see in the many others.

It does something else, as well.

I think that, ever since Star Wars, we’re used to the idea of space battles as great big aerial dog fights.

Balace of Terror doesn’t.

Oh, no … !

It’s a tense, nail-biting, cat-and-mouse naval battle: with the Enterprise as a battleship, and it’s opposing Romulan ship as a submarine, diving and surfacing by using its cloaking device.

And all the more watchable for that.
