It’s officially Sunday … and … ?

A few days after my birthday.

Which means I’ll be having dinner with my family: hopefully, the chip shop’s cod will be on form!

The Kursaal, over in Southend, is a noted amusement park: there’s even a band named after the place.

The place has have troubles for years: as funding issues have meant it’s been repeatedly opened and shut for years.

So … ?

The fact it’s reopening, after issues with the lease, is nice to hear.

I’d been a few times, when I was younger: it’d be nice to re-visit.

I’ve got a 2023 M2 model for sale: that I’ll probably end up selling to the Romford branch of CeX.

Along side an unneeded monitor and a blu-ray version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

We’ll have to see what Facebook’s Marketplace does … once I get genuine customers, instead of chancers!

Hopefully, we’ll get something done!

This morning, I have to head for the town: to see what we can do about that laptop.

Yes: it’s officially Wednesday.

And?

It’s a day I’ve working up to snow … and the need to reset my boiler!

That’s the second time, this week.

One more time, I think I’ll be phoning the landlords, to see what they say.

Twice is coincidence, an’ all that!

You’re — possibly — aware that I have type two diabetes.

I have type two diabetes: in case you couldn’t tell.

I’m on a range of medication: including Metformin, the standard many of us get.

I’m also on Forxiga.

And, as from a few months ago?   A new medication, called Semaglutide: branded under the names, Ozempic and Wegovy.

I’m on it as it’s considered to be a powerful medication in lowering blood sugars, and — in part — because it’s also been found to help with weigh loss.

Something I know I struggle with.

It’s been mildly helpful with the weight.

But generally more helpful for the blood sugars.

The drug’s also proved newsworthy … as many celebrities have been buying it: to help them lose weight.

Something I’ve always felt a little bit resentful of.

I — and many others — need it to deal with our blood sugars: the cast of The Only Way is Essex, don’t need it at all.

They can exercise a lot more easily than I can.

At any rate … ?

It’s been announced that drug can now be used by the NHS: and prescribed to patients who’ve been on various weight management programmes, and only to patients on these programmes.

Hopefully?   That will help with the supply issues.

And mean those of us who need it are prioritised over those of us who want it.

Talking of which … ?

I went up to Brentwood Library, yesterday.   To reassure myself the laptop could connect up to the Library’s wi-fi.

It could.

I know I was … ummm … poking around, as well.

And cam across this page.

Basically?

The link is a proxy — an indirect connection — to Pirate Bay.

Pirate Bay?   Allows us to download torrent files: specialised files that let you download various types of content.

Usually in conjunction with a torrent client: the type of app that does the downloading.

I downloaded the version of Ubuntu on my laptop via a torrent file, to give you an example.

But, famously?   The Torrent technique can also be used to download copyrighted material — movies, TV shows, what have you — for free: from sites like Pirate Bay, KAT, LimeTorrent, and the recently reestablished Demonoid.

So — in line with a pair of court orders from a few years ago — internet service providers are supposed to block access to them, and their proxies.

Given that?

How I managed to get through to a Pirate Bay proxy, yesterday?

I really don’t know …

It’s official: my knob is now off the tumble dryer!

I have to admit, I was drying some t-shirts, last night: whilst I was watching another episode of El Ministerio del Tiempo.

Series two’s tenth episode, so you know: the grim Separadas en el Tiempo*.

Which is possibly beside the point.

The timing knob for the dryer had been loose for a while: which hadn’t worried me, as it was still useable.

But it finally gave up the ghost, last night.

It would pick now to go, wouldn’t it … ?   When I really don’t have the cash to replace it.

Still … 

At least I have a pair of pliers … 

That, at least, lets me use the thing.

On other fronts, I’ve had half an eye on the case of Sergei Skripal, the poisoned Russian double agent, living in Salisbury.

And … ?

Well, it’s been officially confirmed: that an unnamed nerve agent was used to poison him and his daughter.

Indeed, the diplomatic situation is being discussed on the Today programme as I speak.

It’s … 

I have to confess, I’m not sure how I feel about this.

Yes: it’s not a nice thing to have happened: ESPECIALLY not for Mr Skripal and his daughter.

It’s also something done — as far as anyone can tell, right now — at the behest of a foreign power.

Another unpleasant thing to take into account.

But possibly the worst thing to consider?

Is the fact MI6 seemed to have dropped the ball in looking after the chap.

One of ours got it wrong …

Hmmm … 

You’re possibly aware that I follow the technology news.

Aren’t you?

I do: so you know.

You’re possibly aware that I’ve been following the various court cases prosecuting people who sell what’s called ‘fully loaded’ Kodi boxes.

A Kodi box is an Android based media streaming box: that uses the open source Kodi software as its media player and manager.

Like other open source projects?   Kodi has a range of add-ons that boost its functionality.

Including ones that let you access pay to view and subscription content for free.

Most Kodi boxes won’t have those built in.   You have to add them, yourself.

Some sellers, however, are happy to sell you a ‘fully loaded’ box.

With the relevant iffy add-ons already installed.

A couple of days ago?   A couple of days ago, one such seller — Malcolm Mayes — was fined £250, 000 for selling ‘fully loaded’ boxes to pubs and clubs.

Personally?

I’m not too surprised about that.

My concern has been what’s it’s always been.   Not so much with the spread, or stopping of online piracy.

But what sort of implication this could have for the open source model: and — possibly — the computer science research.

After all, enabling researchers and others to develop software means — to me, at least — developing software that, occasionally, breaks the law.

Some sort of immunity from that — to enable researchers and developers to do their jobs — would seem to be in order.

On other fronts?

I mentioned, yesterday, that I’d done (subtitled) rips of series two of Mr Robot: that would play in vlc, MPEGStreamclip and on my AppleTV.

But not in Quicktime.

Despite being in Quicktime’s default format.

I’ve actually worked out that it was the subtitles that were causing the problems.   I’d hit the wrong buttons, when ripping: so that they’d stay hidden, until switched on.
