Star Trek Discovery — Series 3 Episode 12 — There Is a Tide — A Review

Right … It’s got to be said: I have HAD dinner.

Home made chicken stew, if you’re curious.

Complete with chicken, chicken stock, carrots, mushrooms, onions, peppers … and an otherwise perfectly innocent parsnip that didn’t deserve to be chopped up and put in a pot!

Personally … ?

I think it went down well.

Although, frankly?   I think starting it earlier — and letting the thing take longer to reduce —could’ve helped thicken it.

We live and learn.

At any rate … ?

That’s possibly a discussion for another day.

Tonight … ?

I’m doing my usual thing of getting an early night, with a good read.

After telling you a couple of things.

One?

I got a Tweet from DJ, Annie Nightingale: I was glued to her Sunday night show back in the 1980s.

A Duranie always wrote their fan club no. At the bottom right corner of fan letters. a matter of supreme irrelevance till I unwittingly caught out while interviewing, deadpan,@french&saunders being Duranies in a live sketch and asked for their fan club numbers. Fort, on Radio!

I’ve got Spotify’s Ambient rain playlist on, at the moment.

Well, with a window open, it’s relaxing.

And not quite as distracting as having Radio Four on.

Strange, I know.

A week or two ago, I had to go into Basildon Hospital: to pick up a gadget I had to wear, overnight, to monitor my blood oxygen levels.

Apparently?

The tests were inconclusive: and I have to do it all over again.

Yep: once more to sunny Basildon, twice in a row.

Ho … 

Hum … !



The annoying thing is that I’ve had no letter confirming the appointment.



I’m going to be on the phone, tomorrow.

Is that with videos prepped, jobhunting done, and no laundry needing doing?

It was time to catch some TV.

Whilst simultaneously listen to a decades old album, whilst looking it up on the latest app.




Am I the only person thinking there’s an irony, there?

Especially when you consider that the TV show I’ve watched, tonight?

Is another episode of the latest member of a franchise that’s been going … for five decades.

Yes, you’ve watched the intro, haven’t you?

You know perfectly well I’ve tonight’s episode of Star Trek: Discovery.

And, yes: this series is looking good.

American Horror Story — Series 4: Freak Show — Episodes 12 & 13: Show Stoppers & Curtain Call.

You know, I really don’t have money to spend.

I don’t.

So it’s not that often I turn on my heating of an evening.

My flat’s warm enough, as it is.

But to and from the office, today?

Wasn’t necessarily that cold.

But was chilly enough that — right now? — turning on the heating for a bit seemed a good idea.

Especially as the chair in front of my TV?   Has it’s back to the door to the living room: and the incredible draft the vents at the top of the window generate.

One day, I’ll remember how to close them … !

At any rate, I have the day off, tomorrow.

Which means, theoretically, I get to sleep in.

So … ?

As far as I’m concerned, it means I can catch up with some more TV.

I wasn’t going to walk away from series 4.

House of Cards — Series 5: Episodes 11, 12 & 13 — Chapters 63, 64 and 65

There’s something of an old … 

No, there’s something of a new slogan doing the rounds: over the past few years.

An advertising slogan, so you know.

“You should’ve gone to Specsavers.”

Britain’s budget optician are very reasonable, on price.

But charged me £7·50, the last time I needed a repair.

An arm dropped off my regular glasses.

That’s another few quid going their way.

Once I get paid!

Not that it’s completely irrelevant to what I’m doing.

Ish!

Frankly, I’ve managed to buy an album: by Karlheinz Stockhausen, consisting of parts one and two of Kontakte, and a previous electronic work of his, called Gesang der Jünglinge.

I bought it on a whim, to be honest.

I’ve taken a vague — very vague — interest in eleoctronic music: having grown up on the theme tune to Dr Who, And the likes of Gary Numan, OMD and Hot Butter’s Popcorn.

The whim itself?

Got provoked by seeing today’s Google Doodle: marking the studio where a lot of Stockhausen’s electronic stuff was recorded.

Hmmm … 

It’s an album worth hearing, I think: especially if the soundtrack to Forbidden Planet is up your street.

The fact that, on a Friday night, I’m putting up a blog post I expect to go live well before bedtime.

Hopefully, before midnight.

Tomorrow, you see, I’ve got to start work at ten.

In the morning.

Which means getting up at five.

Frankly, that means an early night, from where I’m sitting.

I think that’s sort of what I had in mind, possibly.

Right now?

I’ve got Machine Age Voodoo, by Australian noise band, SPK.

Mostly because I can remember seeing one song — Metal Dance — on The Tube, many years ago.

Top of the Tops, the BBC’s long running music show?

Was relatively mainstream: featuring whatever happened to be in the charts, mimed by the artists.

The Tube?   Could be really way out: live

Which is why Metal Dance stuck in my my mind.   

The band did it live, looked like they walked straight off the set of a Mad Max film, were decidedly odd … 

And had live angle-grinders as part of the gig!

Odd doesn’t even start!

Dr Who — Series 10: Episode 12 — The Doctor Falls

It’s a Sunday, again.

It’s a Sunday, and, to distract myself?

I’ve managed to play a game of backgammon on my tablet.

Whilst playing three games of a Scrabble clone via Facebook Messenger, and add audio to the video versions of some Teasers for later this month, AND, after recoding this week’s episode of Dr Who, editing the resulting bits together.

All that?

And seriously wanting cough mixture!

Is that I’m a busy little bee.

Or, at least, trying to multi task.

Rather distractedly, as it goes.

If you can imagine an overweight, distracted bee, that doesn’t have a clue about pollen?

And, yes: I’ve no clue about pollen.   But DO have a clue about this twelfth episode of season ten of new Dr Who.

The Doctor Falls, effectively the middle episode of a three parter?

Has left me waiting for Christmas.

I supposed I’d better tell you what I’m talking about, hadn’t I … ?

Jus in case you’re not one of my regular readers, my name’s Paul, I work in a call centre in Chelmsford — we take calls for social landlord tenants who need emergency repairs — and live in Brentwood.

I’m an ex-pub-quiz-master who writes the hopefully entertainingly Daily Teaser.

I’m someone getting annoyed by the amount of calls from the kind of call centres telling me I’m entitled to a PPI compensation, or compensation for an accident I had, or that I’ve won a Morrison’s voucher.

I’ve had about five, already, today.

With one or two?   I’ve answered the phone, but just not talked to them.   They get bored and hang up.

But I’m thinking I should get a football referee’s whistle.   I’ve had half a dozen calls like that: one of them is going to get a headache …

At ANY rate … ?

At any rate, one thing I do, when I have time off — along with sweeping, laundry and washing up — is catching a film, or a TV show.

Tonight?

Tonight was a TV show.

Tonight was the last two episodes of series two of Mr Robot.

And yes: the techno-geeky that’s my current fave?

And ended on another tense note.

House of Cards — Series 4: Episodes 11, 12 & 13 (Chapters 50, 51 and 52)

Recently?

Recently, you’ll have realised I’m back to job-hunting.

So there’s thing’s I’m going to be economising on.

Hopefully?

I won’t have to lose net access: what with BT’s prices changing over the years.

Although I stress hopefully, there.

One thing I do know may — depending on circumstances — will suffer?

Is my viewing habits.

As you MAY realise, I’ve been able to buy and watch the odd box-set: and write about them here.

Given the job situation?   That may slow down, if not stop.   But we’ll have to see, won’t we?

Right at the moment?

I’m aware of a few things.

I’m aware I’ve got enough iTunes credit to rent a few movies, and possibly catch up with one or two box-sets.

Should I be able to balance the budget.

After all, I’ve still not seen season three of Penny Dreadful, nor of The Strain: something I’d like to do.

But?

As I got the box set, before the job situation came crashing down around my ears, the one thing I was able to do, was see the last three episodes of season four of House of Cards.

And yes … 

I THINK the series is a good investment …

The Strain Series 2: Episodes 11, 12 and 13 — Dead End, Fallen Light and The Night Train

You know, I’m getting into some bad habits, I really am.

Seriously.

Eating at the wrong time, too mush sugar in my tea, staying up late … !

Actually … ?

I’ve a good — ish — reason for staying up late, tonight.

For starters?  I’ve time off, tomorrow.

Secondly?

I’ve just watched the last three series of The Strain’s second series.

And?

There’s a suitably satisfying big climax, there … !

Right … 

It’s a Wednesday: just in case you hadn’t guessed.

And frankly, one where I’ve had little do: beyond house-keeping, a little light writing, and some shopping.

And … ?

AND watching some TV.

Now, given you know I like several series — Dr Who, certainly, plus Merlin, Torchwood and Penny Dreadful — you’d be correct in assuming it’s one of the few I’ve happily withered on about.

You‘d be right.

In this case, though?

It’s House of Cards.

The last two episodes of series three, in fact.

You know, I’ve got into an awfully bad habit.

No, wait, scrub that: I’ve HAD some awfully bad habits.

Most of which I’m really not going to talk about, here!

But one … bad … ?

One habit I’ve fallen into, recently, is something a lot of us are doing.

Yes … 

I’ve started to binge watch TV box sets.   As if you hadn’t noticed.

And, if you’ve been following on for a while … ?

You’ll know I’d’ve lined up not one, not two, but three — the last three — episodes of series one of … The Strain.

I’m easily impressed by good genre TV: and series 1 …

You know, I HAVE to admit … 

I’ve given up one up one or two bad habits.

Smoking and drinking the two SERIOUSLY big one.

But haven’t given up others.

Seriously unhealthy eating?

That’s one I’ve not managed to completely given up.

Which reminds me: I really do need to get some vegetables in.

Man — at least this man — cannot live on beans, alone.

At ANY rate … ?

One other bad habit is to blog, last thing at night: after a hards shift at work.

But at least … ?   At least I can tell you I’ve seen tonight’s episode of Dr Who …

While tonight’s too episodes haven’t got me as caught as the rest of the series?

Did they just DO that … ?

Tonight’s episode of Dr Who, the Rachel Talalay† directed, Steven Moffat penned, Death In Heaven … 

Sees the death of Osgood, played by Ingrid Oliver: killed by Missy/The Mistress, as she escapes from two UNIT guards, and a pair of handcuffs.

Sees Colonel Ahmed — Sanjeev Bhaskar*, in a cameo part — dragged out of a plane window.   Whilst in flight.

Sees the death of Danny Pink, after he’s been converted into a zombie-style Cyberman.   With a BIG finish, I should add!

Oh … 

And see the Master shot.

Dead.

By the Brigadier.

The fact there’s flying Cybermen, lots of graveyards, and a post-title teaser with Nick Frost as Father Christmas … ?

Could almost be beside the point, couldn’t it‡ … ?
