Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 14-2-2026 — YouTube (Ten Questions)

14th February, 2026: YouTube.

It’s officially official: there’s been a hideously dreadful mistake.

A dreadful mistake, so hideous, that …

Well …

Someone’s possibly getting yelled at, in a way that involves yelling.

You’re possibly wondering what I’m talking about, aren’t you?

Let me be sensible.

It’s the toaster …

I ordered a toaster from Amazon, Tuesday just gone.

A cheap one: that, with one thing and another, I managed to get without having to pay the £4·99 delivery charge.

A cheap toaster that I ended up paying a tenner for.

Only to find that it would eventually be delivered … on 20th March.

Given that?

I complained to Amazon, had the delivery fee refunded, was given ten pound’s worth of gift card as “a good will gesture”, and told a refund would be in my bank account by next Thursday, at the latest.

The hideously dreadful mistake?

Was one made by Amazon: as they gave me £20 worth of gift card!

Well, I’m not going to mention it to them, am I … ?

Not when a new toaster turns up, this afternoon …

Troll Bridge — A Review

20th January, 2021.

Right …

It’s a Wednesday evening, as I start this post.

And?

Frankly, I’m going to go to bed, in a minute: at a time that — twenty years ago — I would have said is a ridiculously early time to go to bed.

But?

The older I get, the more being in bed with a good read is the height of a good time!

So I’m planning to hit the sack with an Arthur Machen story.

But … ?

I felt I should tell you’ve I’ve finally seen the short film version of Terry Pratchett’s Troll Bridge.

And utterly loved it!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10-1-2020: The League of Nations

10th January, 2020.

Hmmm …

OK, YouTube seem to be playing Silly Buggers.

Usually?

There’s an Edit button on a video you upload: that lets you … um … edit information about that video.

The sooner that’s cleared up, the happier I’ll be.

~≈¥≈~

At ANY rate … ?

It’s a busy — ish — Friday.

I’ve got to go to the Jobcentre, today: to arrange for the ticket money for Monday’s interview.

AND have the first of in a series of weight management classes.

Although I have to say, that looks a LOT further away from home than I’m comfortable with.

Hmmm …

The Daily Teaser — 22-12-2015

Hmmm …

Looks like I’ve got an email from CBS.

So you know, they’re the company that ultimately owns the rights to Penny Dreadful: a show I’m thoroughly enjoyed for some time.

I’ve had a video up for a while: this clip.

That goes with this review.

Now, I’ve been disputing this for sometime: CBS have emailed me, saying, in part, “Unfortunately, we must object to your statements that your posting qualifies as a fair use.”

They don’t feel my posting the clip qualifies, and imply they’ll be prosecuting, in order to get it taken down.

BUT also say “To resolve the issues raised, we propose that you withdraw your appeal with YouTube and in exchange, CBS will release the block on your video.”

I’m … well … I’m hoping they’re acting in good faith, should I choose to take their offer up.   But HAVE to admit to a certain amount of healthy scepticism.

But might just send them an email, asking for their assurances that this is what will happen, and see how things go.

Here’s hoping … !

The Daily Teaser — 12-5-2014: Ian Dury …

Hmmm …

You know, that’s … possibly … quite strange.

You remember, a couple of days ago, I said about the problems I had, using YouTube, in Safari?

Basically, I could upload, via Safari version 5, but not use any of a given page’s buttons.   On top of that, the Comments section of the page was refusing to load, properly: preventing me accessing Share section of a given page.

Well …

The last time I checked with Safari … YouTube had got the buttons to work.

That’s good.

They’ve got HALF the problems solved …

Now, I want to ask Google and YouTube — along with everyone on the Forum threads I’ve seen — what on EARTH is going on: and when this problem will be fixed.

One or two suggestions — that seem to come from Google/YouTube staffers — that users upgrade to Mavericks, have gone down like lead balloons.

Including with me.

Get a move on, Google.   My aging G4 can handle YouTube: seemingly, your hard-working engineers are preventing my newer Mini from doing the same!

The Daily Teaser — 8-5-2014: VE Day

Hmmm …

Is anyone ELSE having an issue with YouTube … ?

Let me clarify: is anyone else out there having issues using or accessing YouTube, using Safari 5.x, under Snow Leopard … ?

I know I am, as are others: going by what I can see of the YouTube forums.

I’ve tried my usual range of stuff: from clearing my copy of Safari’s caches and history, to system wide cache clearing, to dumping the relevant .plist files.

With no good result.

And, wouldn’t you know it … ?

Wouldn’t you know it, interacting with YouTube’s forum — trying to post questions myself — is ALSO affected by whatever’s causing the problem.

Grrrr … !

Hmmm … Let’s get a move, shall we?

The New Google +1 Button

Hmmm …

Well, there’s a thing …

Google have added a new button.

To the bottom of the page.

Well …

I’ll correct that, to the bottom of each post, here on Blogger.

And on YouTube, as well.

According to the news reports I’ve managed to quickly scan, the + 1 will be a feature of Google’s owen sites, and be added to their partner sites, as well.

They also have made the point that they’ll be introducing methods for developers to add it to their own sites.

And any article that gets a lot of + 1 hits will go up the Google rankings, as appropriate.

Considering that … ?

Mind doing me a favour … ?

Hit that button.

It’s at the bottom of the post.

Go ON, I need the help … !

Safari And YouTube: Problem Solvéd!

You know, there are times I could kick meself.

And I know perfectly well I’m going to get comments, there … !

But I’ve just been floating around YouTube’s help pages, to see if I couldn’t find something relevant.

I don’t know if you remember, but I mentioned, a few days ago, that I was having trouble accessing YouTube video on YouTube, itself … ?

And only on YouTube.

YouTube videos embedded elsewhere — like the teaser movies I have here, or anything on Facebook, for example — showed up with no problem.

The same content on YouTube, itself, would show up as soundless black boxes: just in Safari, I should add, I had no such trouble in Firefox, or in Chrome, with the YouTube extension added.

And the content still wouldn’t show up in Safari, when I recently updated to Safari 5.0.4, and updated my Flash player.

Frustrating.

Especially, when you consider I’d be to’ing and fro’ing between two different browsers, to make show I’d be accessing the correct video … !

So the fact I had some free time, today … ?

Got me thinking I should look up the relevant pages, to see what I could find.

BINGO.

I found this little hardware test, which didn’t help.

And a workaround that did.

Lord know’s why opening Safari in 32-bit mode seems to help.

But it does.

Happy days!

Blogspot and Copyright

Hmmm …

That’s … a bother …

Actually, that’s a serious bother for about 60, 000 people: my fellow bloggers in Turkey.

I’ve just seen a news article on the BBC News pages.

It seems that the Turkish pages of Blogger — the site I use for Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar — is involved in something of a row with one of the country’s broadcasters, Digiturk, over football.

As a result … ?

Blogger has been taken down, temporarily.

Which is a bit of an over-reaction, from where I’m sitting … !

From what I can gather, various Blogger uses in Turkey have done something similar to what I do with various movies and TV shows.

They’ll quite happily post clips — via YouTube and other services — and add them to their posts, about a given game.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that this is iffy legal ground, to say the least.

Which is why — over the years — I’ve arrived at my way of handling things.

Whenever I post a clip to YouTube, I always make the point of doing this:
Acknowledging the copyright holders: either in the attached comments or or by inserting a copyright notice on the clip*.
Writing words to the effect of “No violation is intended, as the clip is used for illustrative purpose, only” in the Comments section for the clip.
And, lastly, taking down the clip, if requested.
Now, it’s not perfect, I know.

But I don’t think I’ve had too many complaints.

Companies that do object, usually ask YouTube to disable embedding on the offending clips.

Which is …

Well …

A bit of a bummer, from where I’m sitting, as it’d be nice to have some of them, here.

But those clips are their property, after all.

»»•««

At any rate, the point I’m trying to make … ?

Is that I think I and other Bloggers have a right to good old fashioned Freedom of Speech.

Now, granted, that comes with a few basic responsibilities.

Being polite. Being discreet. Making sure we do no harm.

Acknowledging copyright ownership is in there, somewhere, as is giving credit where credit is due.

It’s a trade off.

Granted, I have to — indeed, should — acknowledge intellectual ownership, as and where necessary.

I want to make sure I can show you a relevant clip, photo or quote to make a point.

That’s polite, if nothing else.

»»•««

Now that’s my end of things.

My end of things, you notice … ?

I also believe that copyright holders have an obligation, here.

If that’s the right word, here … ? Debbi … ?

Hmm maybe obligation is the wrong word.

Obviously, I can understand copyright holders have a right to be protective of their property.

I don’t blame them, especially given the existence of sites like Pirate Bay.

However …

I also believe that, along with protecting their property, copyright holders have an obligation to check things. To make sure that — before they get snotty — of how a given clip is being used.

If a copyright holder has a complaint about my use of a given clip or song, I’d hope they’d at least look at what I’ve done with them, in order to satisfy themselves I’m not — frankly — extracting the proverbial Mickey.

But I also hope that any response a holder may have to my use of their property are proportionate to any violation I may have committed.

This situation, where the whole Turkish end of Blogger has been taken down … ?

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again.

I believe it to be an over-reaction.

* One piece of video editing software I find hand is MPEG Streamclip, by Squared5, allows one to insert brief messages into a clip: very handy for this sort of thing. I can also use iMovie to insert a Keynote slide at the end of a .mov presentation.

YouTube: Oh … Didn’t know you could do that …

No, seriously, I really didn’t know that …

Well …

Possibly suspected …

A HEM!

Now, I’ve just discovered — mostly by floating around and playing with it — that YouTube let’s you make playlists.

Which is possibly handy, I’m not sure.

Either way, here’s the playlist I put together for all the film-clips I uploaded.
