Right … 

Just so you know: I had a visit from an electrician working for my landlord.

Who was here to do the five yearly safety check.

The chap was thorough: even managing to unscrew many of the plug sockets, to check their wiring.

It’s the first time I’ve managed to sweep behind some of the tables in years!

At any rate?

And as far as I can tell?

My flat passed.

Not with flying colours: but with enough of a colourful smear to be safe.

Today’s going to be a little different.

Today’s teaser should be on time: as I’ve not got an electrician down.

That means I’ll be able to do the phone meeting I’m due to have at 11, with my Restart* case worker.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1-9-2021: The Month of September

1st September, 2021.

Yes: it’s the first of September … and officially the first day of meteorological autumn.

Which means … 

Well, not a lot, from where I’m sitting.

It just means that there’s going to be the inevitable slide to a freezing cold meteorological winter: and a ever so slowly declining temperatures.

What makes it REALLY nice … ?

Is that my gas supplier — along side everyone else’s! —  are putting prices up in October.

Wouldn’t you know it?

Prices going up … 

And income coming down.

As you know, I’m not working at the moment, and receiving Universal Credit: the standard benefit for unemployed people in the UK.

Which — currently? — includes a twenty pound uplift, introduce in April of last year, to help deal with the COVID 19 crisis.

There’s been calls, over the months, to extend the uplift: call that were partially successful when it was extended to the end of this month.

Yesterday?   I told you that the relevant welfare sections of the UK’s devolved parliaments had called for it to either be extended, again: or to be made permanent.

Today … ?

Today, Work and Pensions Secretary, Therese Coffey, has rejected this.

Saying that “Our ambition is to support two million people move into and progress in work through our comprehensive £33 billion Plan for Jobs.”

I’m … 

Actually, I’m not angry about this.

I’m not surprised about it.

But not angry.

More disappointed.

And curious.

What IS that plan?

And does it have provisions for those of us — like me — who’ve not received a practical job offer in three years.

I serious doubt it.

Given that … ?

I’m going to have to ask Therese Coffey a question or two.

Will she ask the Chancellor to make this permanent?   She’ll make life easier for people claiming Universal Credit.

The other is quite simple.

Ms Coffey, if you’re reading this?   Will you, personally, offer me a job at either your office, or your department?

The way my job hunting’s going, that’s the only way I’ll be ‘moving into work.’

I’ve officially got another phone meeting, today: with my Shaw Trust case worker.

The people running the Work and Health programme for the Job Centre, in other words.

Given the funding situation?

I think I’m going to want a word …

One thing I do know … ?

Is that — apparently — the NHS have started a programme for those of us with type two diabetes.

It’s a series of soups and shakes designed to help those of us who have it — and who are overweight — lose weight: and hopefully put the condition into remission.

It sound similar to something I tried in my early twenties.

It worked, then.

But I’m very aware that it would be a lot more difficult, now.

I’ve some thirty years worth of bad habits built up, since then.

We’d have to see what happens.

Ever heard of Mr Sin … ?

The character was a robot in Dr Who story, The Talons of Weng Chiang: and was a robot … with the brains of a pig.

It turns out science is imitating art, again.

Tesla boss, Elon Musk is developing what he calls his Neuralink: a brain-computer interface.

Personally, I’m thinking he’s been inspired by something similar in the Culture novels of Iain M. Banks.

The reason I mention Mr Sin … ?

Is that it seems Elon’s used a pig: as an experimental subject for one of his Neuralink chips.

Apparently the pig’s called Gertrude.

Rather than Mrs Sin …

Frankly?

I usually end up with legs that feel like abused bits of lead piping.

I take a mild interesting in technology … !

And in in media: I like watching film and TV show.

I’ve always taken a mild interesting in video piracy: they’s been around as long as there’s been some sort of video on-demand.

Personally?

Seeing this piece on the BBC’s news website, about the arrest of eight people who ran various illegal streaming sites?

Only confirms what I’ve believed for a while.

It’s very hard to get rid of video pirates.

Mildly annoyed: after having seen a provisional copy of next week’s rota.

Which, frankly?

Only have me on a three day week.

It also wasn’t up, on Monday: as has generally been the case.

Which is why I’d asked.

I think that’s the thing that gets me as much as anything else.

Granted, I know the manager who writes them has been on holiday.

But that hasn’t stopped previous employers making damn sure the rota was both written, AND available for deputy managers, to post.

Frankly?   And honestly?

I’m mildly twatted off.
