10th October, 2025: World Porridge Day.

Right … it’s Friday: and I’m up early, again.

Yesterday?

I was up early, to go to what they used to call a Job Fair: a chance for employers to meet potential recruits.

I didn’t get much out of it, I think.

But get details of L&Q’s recruitment website: so I could set up an email alert.

So that’s something.

By contrast, I’m up early, today … because I’ve an optician’s appointment.

Yep: I’m picking up new spectacles.

Hopefully, I won’t need to return them at a later dat.

Peace has broken out in the Middle East.

As Israel’s cabinet approved the peace plan proposed by the US President.

Can I be honest|?

I feel deeply cynical about this.

As the Middle East has seen peace-plan after peace-plan, ceasefire after ceasefire, for way too long.

I fully expect this to last for ten minutes.

I also feel deeply cynical about the US president’s motive.

He’s made it perfectly clear he want’s a Nobel Peace Prize: saying as much at a recent speech at the UN.

As far as I’m concerned?

This means the president wants the prestige of a Nobel peace prize because:

• He’s jealous: President Obama got one, so he wants one, too.
• He wants one to make himself look good: rather than because he thinks peace in the Middle East is a good thing to achieve.

OK: I grant President Obama’s Nobel Prize got awarded in a suspiciously short amount of time.

But Obama wasn’t publicly embarrassing himself, and his country, by begging for it.

The current president?

Is.

Frankly?

I can only hope the Nobel Committee gives the gong to someone — anyone! — else.

Right, then: I am officially up, early.

And heading out for a job fair arranged by my Work Coach, my Job Centre Case worker.

Am I looking forward to it … ?

Nope!

It’s a lot of faff, to be frank.

And a lot of faff that’s not necessarily going to be help: at least, that’s my thinking, going on my experience of these things.

Something I know has been mentioned on Radio 4’s Today programme … ?

Is that, last night, BBC Four aired the 1984 made for TV film, Threads.

Something I reviewed, last year.

And still feel is possibly the most powerful, bleak, and terrifying, film I’ve ever seen.

I’m still going to suggest you watch it: it’s on iPlayer, and the blu-ray is on the UK, US and Spanish branches of Amazon.

It’s worth watching … but won’t be for everyone.

10th October, 2023.

It’s official: I need cash!

At least around eighty quid’s worth.

And, frustratingly?

There’s going to be something of a wait for that!

Frankly?

My washing machine is broken: and, going by the error code it’s throwing up?

It’s a blocked drainpipe: or possibly a knackered drain pump.

Something that’s going to cost anywhere from ~£80 — assuming the pipe’s kinked, and blocked — to ~£120: if the pump’s knackered.

Something I won’t know until the job’s done.

The problem with the cash situation?

I won’t have for a while.

Until;

1. The cost of living comes through.
2. I get a grant I’ve applied for.
3. I get a Personal Independence Payment award.

That lot?   Is going to take a while.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 10-10-2022 — Jose Chung’s From Outer Space

10th October, 2022.

Yep: it’s Monday.

And … ?

I’ve a phone call from a physiotherapist this morning — at 8:50, in case the Teaser’s delayed — and a meeting with my job centre case worker, this afternoon … and I’ve got my nephew, Jude, over, after that.

So … ?

Busy … ?

Yes: and possibly noisy … !

As I write?

As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying over the Ukraine: trying to kill people.

Literally.

The bombing started around six AM, UK time: and is felt to be in response to the bombing of the bombing of a bridge from Russia to the Crimea.

I can only hope those bombings haven’t killed President Zelenskyy.

That would be one hell of a blow to Ukraine.

Just as a final thought … ?

You’ll remember I’ve recently seen the 2022 version of Hellraiser.

Last night, something struck me as being deep … but could just me reading to much into the text.

At one point?   Riley, the main character, turns around to Pinhead/The Priest, and refuses to have anything more to do with events: says “I’ve done enough.”

To which the Priest replies “Enough is a myth.”

Riley’s a recovering addict, and been through a twelve step programme … and would be very familiar with the old saying read out at meetings: “One’s too many, two’s never enough.”

Something reiterated in many of AA’s publications.

Was that deliberate?   I don’t know.

But, lord … it struck me as subtle.

You’ve realised by now that I’ll happily watch a TV show, or two.

And that the ones I should review?   I do.

I’m also a Dr Who fan: which you’d possibly also worked out.

So … ?

This link telling that the first episode of series thirteen — Flux — will air on 31st October, this year?

Was interesting.

Although, frankly?

I’d’ve been happier seeing it on the BBC’s official Dr Who site.

At any rate … ?

We’ll have to see what happens on Halloween … !

I’ve officially had the swab test: just the swab test.

Usually, it’s a swab and blood test.

Frankly?

After three tries, the tester couldn’t get a drop out of me!

Apparently?

The aspiring I’m on, for my heart?

Is what’s causing the problem!

Right … 

I’m off to hospital, today.

Right at the moment, I’ve a CPAP machine: a pump that helps me breathe at night.

It’s helpful: I think I’ve had generally better sleep since using it.

Although the mask I have to wear overnight is … distinctly unflattering … !

Hopefully, though?

I’ll be able to keep hold the thing.

It’s useful.

Have you ever been to the Glastonbury Festival?

I haven’t: I’ve never been able to afford it.

I do try and keep an eye on some of the televised acts, when the BBC has them.

Especially the Sunday night Legends slot.

Next year’s has just been announced.

It’s Diana Ross.

I’m impressed.   Ms Ross is one of the authentic legends.

The only person bigger would’ve been Aretha: and she’d be a tough one to book.

Going by the rota I got sent?   I’m off until the weekend.

Going by the phonecall I got from the boss, last night?

No I’m not … !

I’m back in tonight and tomorrow … !

OK, granted, I could’ve checked: indeed, should’ve done … 

But?

It’ll be a little before I watch more Man in the High Castle!

Right … 

I have to confess, I’ve been watching Star Trek: Discovery, recently.

Indeed, I caught the most recent episode, last night.

And, yes, The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry is possibly a bit too long as an episode title: although I’m very aware Debbi, Old Peculiar regular and rampant The Prisoner fan that she is, will mention Do not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling!

At ANY rate?

At any rate, I’m rather impressed with the design of the show.

Including Voq’s ship.

The idea of the ship is very Klingon — it’s a ship covered in the coffins of its dead crew members — incredibly baroque … 

And incredibly gorgeous looking!

Right … 

Today is — technically — the day.

Firstly … ?   And frankly … ?

I start work, today: at least, I start the initial training period.

I’m nervous about that: as I’ll be working in an area that’s completely new to me.

The one other thing I want to do, today?

Assuming I get the chance, of course!

Is relatively simple.

Phone my landlord to let them know what’s going on.

I’ve been claiming Housing Benefit for many years.   And?   In the wake of leaving KFC, I’ve had to change from Housing Benefit, to Universal Credit: and claiming the Housing Cost portion of the new benefit.

As you’re possibly Aware, the DWP have told me that the evidence I’ve given them — the Tenancy Agreement and Rent statement they themselves have asked for, along with confirming emails — were insufficient.

They’ve told me to get in touch with my landlord: something I’m going to try and squeeze in, today.

If I get the chance?   I’ll be getting in touch with them, AND the Job Centre, too!
