OK, I think I’ve had a little success, today.

Really.

Remember I told you — a few days ago, now — I was trying to sell off my sister’s old laptop?

I managed to do so, today.

Picking up a tidy sum, in return.

My sister, Ruth, got her share: I got a fish supper and a movie.

Didn’t I just … ?

The film in question?   Was the straight to video 2015, Paul Hyett directed, Neil Marshall penned, Howl.

And ‘straight to video’ … ?   Isn’t necessarily bad.

Something I’ve noticed over the years is a little rule of story-telling, especially in things like horror films: and one or two Agatha Christie novels, now I think of it.

It’s quite a simple one, really: and goes a bit like this: anyone who’s in an isolated area seems to be easily subjected to fear and terror.

Certainly, some of the scarier episodes of Dr Who seem to use it: even if that isolated area is in central London.

And Agatha used it — most notably — in And Then There Were None.

But it’s ALSO something that got used in a film I managed to sit down down and watch, last night.

The 2002, Neil Marshall film, Dog Soldiers.

And my word, it’s fun … !

Dog Soldiers sees Sean Pertwee as Sergeant Wells, leading a small squad of troops into the Scottish highlands: as part of a training exercise against a squad of SAS men.

What he and his squad aren’t expecting … ?

Is the fact that the part of the Highlands they’re in … is a touch wilder than most: and seems to have something of a pest problem.

Now, I have to admit, Dog Soldiers is the first of Neil Marshall’s films I saw, many moons ago.

And I have to admit, I’ve see one or two, since and thoroughly enjoyed them.

So the fact, last night, I decided to go back to source to see the FIRST film of his I’d ever caught … ?   Just reminded me of how much fun it was.

My suggestion … ?

Doomsday: Revisiting the Hot Zone …

You know, right now, I’m going to admit to happily yawning.

But thought that, if nothing else, I should at least get started on a post.

Complete with the intention of finishing in the morning.

It is a bit late to be up on a work night, after all.

But — as I said a couple of lines ago — I wanted to at least start telling you about the movie that I, Movie Night Adrian and Kevin D saw, tonight.

Me and Adrian were revisiting an old friend.

The 2008 Neil Marshall directed film, Doomsday.

And we took Kevin with us …

Centurion: Blood Guts, and Romano-Pictish relationships

You know, I think the movie night gang’s managed to benefit …

A bit …

From a bit of a feck-up by Brentwood Library.

We managed to get hold of a copy of the Neil Marshall directed historical drama, Centurion a few days before its official release … !

Not that I think any of us were complaining.

Because I believe we’ve caught a good film, however it slipped through the net …

Really, Essex Council’s library service really should keep an eye on these things: that’s how copyright violators and video pirates get hold of these things, honestly.

But at any rate, I know that Movie Night Adrian, Kevin D and I — along with Squeaky and Big Josh — managed to catch it, tonight.

Seems Big Josh caught it early, too …

Cie La Vie …

Centurion is set in the Britain of of 117AD: loosely based on stories of the disappearance of Rome’s 9th Legion, it sees Quintus Dias — played by Michæl Fassbender — leading the last legionaries out of Caledonia after an disastrous attempted on Pictish tribes, north of what was to become Hadrian’s Wall.

And I’ve got to admit, Centurion is really worth watching: at least, it got me happily raving about it and Adrian rating it as “Hmmm … Entertaining!”

About the only hold-out was Kevin D, bless him, who’s still a touch undecided about it.

Over-all, though … ?

Two out of three isn’t bad …
