Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-10-2025 — The Great London Beer Flood

17th October, 2025: the Great London Beer Flood.

Gosh, I hope they’re OK … !

I’ve just had a very old friend get in touch with me: as she’s having trouble with her Ubuntu-powered laptop.

She felt I’d be the best person to ask: as I’d been the person to give her the install disk.

Hopefully?

The Google links I found seem to imply the problem comes with when the operating system is updated: it causes an issue with the boot loader, the software on a computer that loads things into memory.

From a quick read of this, this, and this?

My friend should be able to re-install the software from either her back-up, or from the original install media!

Here’s hoping!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th October 2024.

17th October, 2024.

Pop star, Liam Payne*, has died.

The former One Direction star was on holiday in Argentina: falling from a third floor hotel room, after — it seems — getting drunk.

There’s possibly half a ton of stuff to say, there.

But?

The thing that surprises me, isn’t the fans mourning.

I can understand that.

What always surprises me?

Is the hero worship shown.

Humanity does seem to like bending at the knee.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-10-2023 — Legalising Cannabis

17th October, 2023: Legalising Cannabis.

Right … it’s officially the case that I have a fixed washing machine.

At any rate … ?

The repair man — from a local company called Mackfields — was over, yesterday afternoon.

And managed to fix the machine.

The error code I initially noticed — F05 — was correct: there was a blockage in the drain pipe.

With that cleared, suggestions for cleaning regular, and a demonstration of how to use the temperature control, done*?

I now have a functioning machine!

Thanking you, Trevor, if you’re reading this.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th October 2022.

17th October, 2022.

Yes: it’s Monday.

And you’d think mentioning Monday Monday in the introduction would trigger a nice pleasant earworm.

From the Mamas and the Papas.

Nope!

I got Mama Cass’ Dream a Little Dream of Me!

Why?   I don’t know, but it’s a good tune!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th October, 2021.

17th October, 2021.

It was, quite definitely, a strange night.

Last night, that is: for me.

I have to confess, I … well, I got an OK night’s sleep: the CPAP machine I have certainly helps.

But last night … ?   Saw me up, a couple of times, and staring at the walls.

Why?

I don’t know.

~≈🥱≈~

I mentioned, in yesterday’s Teaser, that I’d seen the Dr Who series thirteen trailer.

Which does look good.

I’m still not necessarily convinced by the new design of Sontaran: the head’s too tall.

I am impressed with the skeleton creatures: the ones that look vaguely like the Cenobites from Hellraiser.

One thing I did notice about publicity shot of whatever those are … ?

Is that it’s the wrong way around: the crystals on the side of the male creatures’s head are on two different sides.

You’d think the BBC would notice these things …

~≈🤨≈~

Just as a final thought … ?

You’ll possibly have released a new Batman movie — called The Batman — is due out.

It does look a little grimdark, doesn’t it?

But in a good way.

At any rate, it’s out on 4th March, next year.

If anyone wants a birthday present buying hint …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-10-2020: Eminem

17th October, 2020.

I am bloody angry …

Remember me telling you about the situation with the mobile phone?   Because a local mast is down … ?

Well, I was sent the usual email summary from the various local rags, yesterday.

It’s seems it’s going to take longer.

Which, frankly, I hadn’t worked out!

The article saw a lot of councillors blaming the phone operators for the continuing black out.

Which is a little hypocritical, I think.

As it was the Council’s turning down plans for extra masts, in April …

~≈😡≈~

There’s something else.

Remember the chap who slept on my doorstep, a couple of weeks ago?

My landlords … ?

Installed a bar over the lock of the main door: to stop people jimmying the lock to get in.

That stayed until yesterday.

When someone removed it.

I’ve sent a rocket up my landlord’s bums: AND tweeted it.
As you can imagine, I’m not happy.

I’m screamingly angry.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-10-2019: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

17th October, 2019

Another year, another day, another dollar: ha!

But in all that?

I’m getting my boiler looked at, today.

Much like it’s needed for the past couple of years.

Quite what’s happening … ?

I honestly couldn’t tell you.

~≈≈~

Did I mention Extinction Rebellion?

The protest movement is known for it’s direct action: with member glueing themselves to walls, railings, trains and planes across the world.

This morning, however?

Frustrated commuters have pulled an Extinction Rebellion protestor off of a tube train in Canning Town.

Personally?

I’m sympathetic to Extinction Rebellion’s cause: I think governments should be doing more.

But, having been a commuter who’s had his train delayed, too many times, by people who’ve jumped in front of them?

I’m with those commuters.

However sympathetic I may to your cause?   I vote Green, after all.

However sympathetic I am, don’t stop my trip to work.

I’m likely to be less sympathetic.

Now …

Have a playlist …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th October 2018

17th October, 2018.

Yep: the Man Booker Prize has been won by Anna Burns.

Good for her: £50, 000 prize money is always appreciated.

Personally, though … ?

I’ve got one question.

How is it Britain’s major literary prize has never gone to a science fiction, or fantasy novel?

Personally?

It’s long since been the case the SF doesn’t — with a few exceptions* — get Oscars.

It’s still the case with something like the Booker.

We?   Are in a ghetto.

Still.

~≈§≈~

One good bit of news for SF fans?

Is ratings.

Or, at least, those for Dr Who.

Jodie Whittaker’s first episode had total viewers rated at … 10.9 million.

The best for an opening episode since Christopher Ecclestone’s debut, Rose.

Well done them!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th October, 2017.

Hmm …

That was something …

It you, like me, live in the UK, you’d’ve realised that what was left of Hurricane Ophelia hit the country, yesterday.

Doing considerable damage in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

If, like me, you’re in the south east?

You’d’ve been between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Caught between weird weather conditions from Ophelia, and smoke from the wildfires hitting Spain and Portugal.

And leaving skies in Essex, certain, very odd.

Which my phone’d camera doesn’t catch very well.

But … ?

Well …

Smoke and storms will do weird things to skies.

Including turning the skies over Chelmsford and Brentwood a definite, and dirty, yellow.

Very odd to see …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-10-2016

Right, that’s useful …

In theory … ?

In theory, today’s the day I get paid the benefit money I’m due: for the weeks I’ve spent out of work.

I’m looking forward to it.

Frankly?

It means I can pay my bills.

It means I can get some food shopping: after all, who doesn’t like eating?

And, just as importantly?

It means I can get the train to work.

Frankly?

That’s VERY helpful!
