Byzantium: A Review …

1st October, 2018.

Yep … I’m feeling desperately tired, right now.

Tired …

And depressed.

Yes, I’ve have depression: have done for some time.

Usually?   The thyroid medication helps: as my under-active thyroid that can contribute to the condition.

The prozac helps, too.

But, sometimes?

Sometimes there are situations where situations beyond your control trigger an episode.

A really dark depressive episode.

Unfortunately?   The situation at work has gotten nasty: with shifts cut drastically.

As you can imagine?

That’s affected my mood.

Seriously, I should stress.

I really don’t like the area my thoughts are taking me, I honestly don’t.

But I’m very aware some of those bleaker thoughts?

Are the depression speaking: and not something to follow up on.

Hopefully?

I can start job hunting in the morning.

AND making arrangements with my creditors.

I can’t let the depression or the situation get to me.

However bad either might actually get.

~≈§≈~

What doesn’t help?

Is simply the fact I’ve little money to spend, but plenty of time, sitting around.

OK, I’ve kept eyes open for jobs …

AND written more Teasers.

And tried to do a few things around the flat.

But frankly?

Had a choice of what to do with my evening.

Go to bed, early.

After all, I’m still wading through the novel of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

OR stay up and catch one of the backed up films in my collection.

I stayed up …

Frankly?

I fancied a movie …

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 25th February, 2018

25th February, 2018.

Yep … I’m still feeling rough.

To the point where 69p on a bag of really powerful cough sweets helped: and was possibly the only thing that got me through work, yesterday.

I’m also VERY aware of blot spam: or comment spam, as it’s sometimes called.

I’ve had two or three bits of it try and get past the moderation.

I’m just glad I managed to switch the thing on, all those years ago … !

The Brave One: A Review

27th October, 2013.

Blimey, it’s amazing how distracting Wikipedia and IMDb can be, it REALLY is.

Seriously.

I’ve just managed to get around — with the little iTunes credit I have — to catch a movie.

Jodie Foster in the 2007, Neil Jordan directed, The Brave One.

And have to admit: it’s not until you go through someone’s entry on either site, you realise — ESPECIALLY in the case of Ms Foster — quite how impressive a list of gongs she has.

Well deserved gongs, at that, I think!

Which I believe saying what I’m going to say, all the easier.

The Brave One … ?   Is Ms Foster and co, on some VERY good form.

28th October, 2013.

Phew … !

That was quite some day: I’ve been to Basildon — as part of the Work Programme I have to attend — and seeing the amount of downed trees en route was quite something.

Saying that?   Storm St. Jude seems to be on its way out of the UK, having done its damage.

I think we can be thankful it wasn’t worse.

At ANY rate … ?   The storm WASN’T what I was telling you about, was it?

No.

No, I was telling you about last night’s film: the 2007, Jodie Foster film, The Brave One.

Foster plays talk show radio host, Erica Bain: a woman who — in the middle of her busy career — is organising her upcoming weeding to long term boyfriend, David (Naveen Andrews).

And at the start of the film … ?   The couple are walking their dog through Central Park, when they’re mugged.

David is killed.   Erica … ?   Left seriously wounded, both physically, and mentally.

After she recovers, Erica tries her hardest both to get herself out of her front door, to get back to a normal life.

Something she finds not helped by the time the police take to try and find her lovers killers: and the initial refusal she receives in trying to buy a gun.

Something that, in her desperation and anger … ?   She eventually buys illegally, from one of Chinatown’s more … ahh … dubious residents.

With results that leave Erica feeling profoundly changed.

Now …

Good form … ?

I should say so!

I feel that, between them, Foster, Jordan, et al, have made a wonderfully taut variation on the Deathwish theme.

One that both recognises the need for revenge, AND when to stop seeking it.

Personally?

Personally, The Brave One is one heck of good film.

Go get … !

The Company Of Wolves: Sweetest Tongue and Sharpest Tooth

11th April, 2010.

You know, that was strange …

Ish …

A movie night without Movie Night Adrian: who’s helping out an ill friend, tonight, so couldn’t join Kevin D, Dr Kevin and I for the usual Saturday Night movie.

And I’ve got to admit, tonight’s film, for us, was something a little different: the 1984 Neil Jordan directed, Angela Carter authored, film, The Company of Wolves.

Which does make a change.

The film sees youngster, Rosaleen — played by Sarah Patterson — dream that she’s living in the archetypal fairytale forest.

One that her Grandmother — played by Angela Lansbury — warns her not to go to far into …

And tells Rosaleen a tale or two, to prove her point …

Of wolves …

Of the beast in men …

Of wild animal’s, and things and howl in the night* …

You get the picture, don’t you … ?

(You can possibly also tell it’s 1 in the morning …)

~≈§≈~

At any rate, it’s late enough to leave the summary of the plot to others.

Suffice to say that’s it’s a fairly obvious metaphor …

I’m also very aware that myself, Kevin D and Dr Kevin took somewhat different views on The Company of Wolves.

But all agreed that it’s a film that’s worth watching at least once.

~≈§≈~

I’m also aware that I possibly didn’t do the second episode of Season 5 of Dr Who.

Possibly …

I’m actually just re-watching it on the BBC’s iPlayer.

I won’t give away too much of the plot, as I know that Kevin D hasn’t seen it, as yet.

But I’m thinking that this isn’t one of Stephen Moffat’s better scripts, although it does have it’s moments.

I’m also very aware, though, that he has written the bulk of this season’s episodes, and taken on the rôle of Head writer, and the show’s Executive producer.

Which I’m thinking is showing, a little: but then again, this is all new …

For all of us …

* There’s a quote from Terry Pratchett’s Fifth Elephant that did spring to mind, here … : ‘[Igor] Go and tell the children of the night to make vonderful music somevhere else, vill you? I have a headache.’
