It’s officially Friday.

And I can safely say I’ve had visits and phone calls!

I had an engineer, here, yesterday: to look at my smart meter.

Which, as it turns out, needs replacing: rather than, as I’d originally thought, resetting.

I have to give the visiting engineer credit: for turning up early, and explaining what was going on.

And give just as much credit to the call centre agent — a Scottish chap called Mark — for being equally as helpful.

He got the appointment for the next visit sorted in minutes.

All I have to do now … ?

Is wait until next Tuesday: for the second engineer!

That’s not the only call I was involved with!

No: I had a conversation with lord knows how many people at BT, my Internet Provider.

I want to upgrade my service: to a faster, full fibre, one.

Getting a date booked for this … ?

Is proving difficult.

What seems to be the problem?

Simply the fact I live in Flat 2.

But BT think I live in Flat 1 … despite sending the bills to the correct address since 2008 … !

And, when needed, have sent engineers to the correct address, as well!

What’s happening?

Beyond spending  lot of time on the phone?

I really wish I knew … !

Right … 

It’s Thursday.

And … ?

Waking up with an earworm is not something I was planning!

Especially not that earworm: it’s horrible, isn’t it?

I think I might need a new phone: possibly.

I was switched over to the new Digital voice thing run by my Internet Service Provider.

It means my landline phone is plugged into my new router, rather than the junction box in the wall.

However?

It seems some of the phone’s features — call blocking, number tracking, what have you — don’t work with the router.

Which is a shame.

I got a call from a Technical Department scammer*, yesterday: one of the usual “Hello, we’re from Microsoft: your PC is causing problems!!!!!!!!”

It would’ve been nice to be able to block that … !

Right … I was officially looking after my nephew, yesterday.

Yes: Bobby the Cat made  an appearance!

I’ll happily admit to being a Dr Who fan.

And one that’s feeling saddened, this morning.

At receiving news that William Russell — who played Ian Chesterton in the first episodes of the show — has died at the age of 99.

The man will be much missed.

It’s Monday morning, and I’m up early: to go to my weight management class.

Provisionally … ?

I think I’ve lost something.

But here’s hoping.

At any rate … ?

When you want to get out early … ?

That’s not the time for YouTube to play Silly Buggers!

Moving on, briefly: and with an awareness of the time?

I’m out of work: and claiming benefits.

So?

Take an interest in news about the benefits system.

Including anything about a proposed Basic Income system.

It is — so you know — an benefit that’s not means tested, and at a level guaranteed to keep people above the poverty level.

It sounds good: but I’ve always felt that some of the schemes proposed are … possibly impractical.

At any rate … ?

According to a BBC report?   It seems that a think tank called Autonomy are to run a small scale — very small scale, some thirty people big — pilot: and are seeking financial backing for it.

The BBC’s piece give very little in further detail: beyond the fact the scheme is supposed to pay some £1, 600 a month.

An amount that I’d find useable.

Quite what the practicalities of the scheme would be?

After all, there’s extra funds available to those of us on Universal Credit, and not on others: and if we’re on UC, we can claim free prescriptions, and various forms of medical treatment.

Whether those thirty people could claim those, is a whole other matter.

Either way?

I can only hope this project gets the backing it needs: and can produce useful results.

Yep: today is the official date of the Queen’s Platinum Pageant.

Which is possibly going to be exciting.

If you’re into pageants, obviously.

About the one thing I can say … ?

Is that a quick look out of the window tells me it’s raining.

I hope everyone’s got an umbrella.

Yep: I need parsnips … !

I don’t know about you, but I’m on a budget.

Which means … ?

I tend to make a lot of one pot stews.

It takes a while.

But it’s usually — comparatively — cheap.

And will last a few days.

Whether it’s healthy?   I don’t know.

But it can’t be worse a microwave meal.

At ANY rate … ?

I need parsnips.

And celery.

And … you know … 

Stuff!

You know, I might just get some minced pork: just for a change …

It’s Friday … 

And … ?

I have to admit, I’m taking part in an ONS survey: that’s tracking the spread of Covid-19.

Which is me being public spirited.

It ALSO helps that to say thank you?

The ONS sends me Amazon vouchers.

They’ve sent another, after yesterday’s test.

Which is nice: I’ve a few more black t-shirts on the way, along side a style guide.

And a couple of books*.

It’s all good.

I don’t know if you spotted me mentioning digital poverty — the facts some of us can’t afford a ’net connection, or a computer to go with it — towards the end of May … but I mentioned digital poverty towards the end of May.

I’ll doing at least one piece about it in the not to distant future.

I HAVE, however, had an answer from Essex County Council: about schools handling of laptops and connections.

I’m working on the post: and will let you know about it soon.

5th June, 2019.

You know, it’s not often I say this: and not often I repeat it.

But something I highlighted, last night?

Was something Apple are doing.

In an announcement, a couple of days ago, they waved the new MacPro at people: yes, I’d love one.

With the wheels, thank you … !

In a separate announcement?

They announced they’re going to be dissolving iTunes on the Mac: and replacing it with three separate apps.

Hmmm … 

I’m … 

Well, I covered this in further detail in last night’s post about El Ministerio del Tiempo.

But it boils down to this.

I’ve a large media library: what happens to that, when the change comes?

And will I still be able to use the replacements to do that?

There’s other questions: highlighted by a friend, last night.

What on Earth happens to those of us with classic iPods: or olde model iPads, or iPhones … ?

I don’t know.

Frankly?

I’m concerned.

I’m … very unsurprised, this morning.

Theresa May, the Prime Minister, has officially condemned various shades of tech company.

Along with others in her government, she’s criticised both social media, and companies that use end to end encryption, for allowing radicals a ‘safe space,’ in which to plan.

OK, I can appreciate that … 

But Ian Duncan Smith made — completely unintentionally — a minor point: in an Andrew Marr show interview, yesterday.

He said words to the effect of “Parents don’t know what their children are doing, online.”

Now, yes: tech companies could be doing more.

But what are we as parents doing to keep our children away from radicalisation?

You?

Me?

The family next door?

If the answer’s “I don’t know what they’re up to,” or “I don’t know how to use a computer”?

We’re just as bad as the tech giants.

There’s something else that’s unsurprisingly surprising.

In a nice way.

I managed to catch this week’s episode of Dr Who, last night: The Lie of the Land.

And couldn’t help but notice the 1984 references.

After all, the monks base is a giant pyramid with ‘Truth’ written all over it, whose controllers are keeping the boiler-suited population oppressed by re-writing history: complete with ‘Memory’ police enforcing it.

So I asked him about it, via Twitter.

Turns out he is.

I’m happy!
