Doctor Who — The Evil of the Daleks: Episode 5 — A Review

7th January, 2022.

Right …

It’s a Friday evening: and I’m looking forward to two things.

Dinner: fish and home made chips, if you must know.

And another episode of classic Doctor Who serial, The Evil of The Daleks.

Episode 5 if you must know.

I’ll be back to finish this written review, later.

Yayness!

It’s Saturday!

Which means I’ve got to try and pick up some paperwork from my GPs,

And see if a repeat prescription’s in.

Here’s hoping it’s not raining … !

Oh … I’ve just had a look at the BBC’s website.

Apparently, the building that used to be the local branch of Dorothy Perkins*?

Is going to be turned into a branch of Tescos.

Whether’s that a good or bad thing, is a whole other idea.

But at least it’s an alternative to Sainsbury’s.

Oh, as one last thing … ?

Do you remember a TV show called Grange Hill … ?   It was aimed at children, and huge, when I was growing up.

And famously controversial.

After all, it saw teenage pregnancies, bullying, racist pupils, activist pupils, and at least one teacher/pupil affair.

And had one heroin addicted character — Zammo, played by Lee McDonald — ending up licking spilt heroin from the floor, after stealing from his friends.

All this … ?

Is due to be revived as a film in 2023.

I might just have to keep an eye peeled.

You know, I don’t often get political.   But do like a rant: usually about stuff that affects me directly.

Cash usually does.

I’m unemployed, and job hunting: and, as such, I’m on what’s called Universal Credit, the standard unemployment benefit.

There’s a few other bits and bobs available: but that’s the main one.

During the start of the pandemic?

Thos of us on UC were given a twenty pound a week uplift: an extra bit of money equivalent to some £86 a month.

It got withdraw in September of last year.

Much to my disappointment, and the disappointment of many others.

The reason I mention it today … ?

Is that an article from the I newspaper floated across my timeline, yesterday: calling for the uplift’s reinstatement.

I’d love it if it did.   My electricity bill, for the month … ?   Was seventy quid.

That £86 would be bloody handy.

As much as I need it?

I seriously doubt it’ll happen under the current government.

Yep, I’ve got a blood test, today: after the last set I had, missed something!

Apparently?   It’s tracking both my liver and kidney function.

This will show they’re (comparatively) fine.

Or, at least, what’s going on for them, and what treatment may be needed as a result.

Here’s hoping!

As an extra point … ?

I had a Reboot your CV course, yesterday: something arranged by the Restart programme I’m on.

I think it was helpful enough for me to make minor improvements to my CV.

I have to admit, though … an hour and a half’s worth of MS teams meeting … ?

Didn’t half drag … !

JUST as a minor point … ?

You’ve heard of cryptocurrencies, yes?

In case you haven’t, they’re a kind of digital currencies: then — these days — need a lot of computing power in order to run.

Each unit of a cryptocurrency has a digital serial number on something called a block chain: working that serial number out, and verifying it and its owner, and where it is on the chain, is what takes the energy.

The process is called mining, so you know.

There’s been a lot of discussion of that energy usage: especially as, the last I knew, the energy used was roughly equal to Iceland’s annual electricity output.

Something game changing may have happened, though.

As Kosovo banned cryptocurrency mining, yesterday.

Global energy prices — and the blackouts that mining is contributing to — helped make that decision.

Personally … ?

I’m wondering what that will mean for the future of cryptocurrencies: and when or if we’ll start talking about a cryptocurrency bubble.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 5-1-2022: Umberto Eco

5th January, 2022.

Do you ever get that, first thing in the morning?

That time when staring at walls seems to make sense?

Possibly just me, then: unless everyone’s brain takes a while to get into gear, as they get older!

At any rate … ?

It’s now the day after yesterday: and?   I’ve now got a working bathroom light.

And managed to drop off samples, have a job centre meeting, and get a little shopping.

Which doesn’t sound like much, I know: but did make for a busy day.

Today’s going to be quieter.

Although, saying that … ?

I’ve got an official CV re-writing course, this afternoon: through a Microsoft Teams video call.

We’ll have to see how that goes …
