The Daily Teaser — 7-7-2015

Ah-HA!   The box-set of Sapphire and Steel that I ordered?

Has officially been delivered … !

And I have to admit, I’ve been having a bit of a binge watch: certainly of Assignment’s 1 and 2.

Actually Assignment 2 — Story 2, Adventure 2, whatever ever you want to call it — is the notorious one: set in an abandoned railway station, it sees our heroes dealing something — something — lurking on the footbridge connecting the two platforms of a railway station.

It’s got to be said, this particular one … has a very slow pace.

But … ?

But ALSO ramps up the tension in a way I think very little modern TV shows do.

With the possible exception of a couple of Torchwood episodes, Small Worlds and From Out Of The Rain.   Which, by a huge co-incidence, where written by Sapphire and Steel creator, P. J. Hammond.

It just goes to show, I think.

You can’t keep a seriously spooky writer down …

I think I should also add one more thing, before we move on.

Today is the tenth anniversary of the 7/7 bombing attacks on various parts of London.

I can remember that day.

I was working at The Hutton: a small pub — now called the Hutton Junction — near to Shenfield Station, one of the main stations on the line from Southend to Liverpool Street: one of the London terminals hit by the bombers.

I can remember when many of the regulars — city workers, mostly, unable to get to work, because of the bombs — coming back in, looking shocked, stunned … and grateful to be alive.

I kept serving pints.

Most, if not all of them, seriously needed a beer.

So, if nothing else?

I have to admit that my thoughts are with those customers: I’m grateful none were killed or injured.

My thoughts are also with those who lost loved ones: as are my prayers.   there’s not much else I can say or do that would help.

I do know, though, I have one thought.

The bombings happened the day after it was announced that London was to host the 2012 Olympics.

The day those Olympics started?

The weeks London hosted a successful Olympic Games?

Means — to me — that the bombers lost …
