Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 1-10-2025 — International Day of the Older Persons

1st October, 2025: the International Day of the Older Persons.

Right, then: it’s officially official.

It’s Wednesday!

But you knew that: you can see the calendar as well as I can!

That’s possibly beside the point.

It’s Wednesday, 1st October, which means it’s the national day of China.

We might have to eat pancake rolls.

It’s also my sister, Ruth’s, birthday.

Hopefully, Jude’s got his mother a card … !

And lastly … ?

I’ve got a meeting with my Job Centre case worker.

Hopefully, that will be productive: and possibly sort out an issue or two.

I have to admit, I’ve turned the radio — or, at least, the TV that’s playing Radio 4 — off.

It’s party conference season: so the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, was on.

Banging on about ‘British values’: one of the most meaningless phrases in the political handbook.

After all, he’s accused the Reform party of having racist policies: then, today, used the phrase ‘British values’ …

Which could easily, and historically, remind us British values includes beating up brown people: and selling opium to the Chinese!

Politicians can do lots of good for the UK.

But political language … ?

When George Orwell wrote “Politics and the English Language”, when he invented the word, “duckspeak”, he had a point.

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga†, Irene ‡ and Debbi§ putting in their answers: with Olga, Irene and Debbi scoring ten out of ten, and Mum on nine.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        1st October is the International Day of the Older Persons.   According to whom: the European Union, the United Nations or the International Criminal Court?

Q2)        It’s been marked since which year: 1991, 1993 or 1995?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        30th September saw Thunderbirds debut on British TV.   30th September of which year: 1965, 1967 or 1969?
A1)        1965.

A2)        Gerry and Sylvia Anderson.

Q3)        The show is about the Thunderbirds.   The Thunderbirds were more correctly called International what?
A3)        International Rescue.   (I had thought the real world International Rescue Committee were named after them: but apparently not …)

Q4)        According to the opening credits, “Thunderbirds are …” what”?
A4)        Go”.   (In universe, the phrase is frequently used by Jeff Tracy. )

Q5)        The main characters are brothers called Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon and John.   Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon and John who: Trump, Trammel or Tracy?
A5)        Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon and John Tracy.   (Shame Rimmer, the voice of Scott Tracy, also voiced cult hit, Dick Spanner: PI.)

Q9)        Only one of the Thunderbird vehicles was in space.   Which vehicle?
A9)        Thunderbird 5.   (I’m going to hand out points for Thunderbird 3, as well.   I’ll learn how to write unambiguous questions at some point!)

Q10)        Finally … ?   David Graham died in 2024.   He voiced which character: Jeff, Brains or Lady Penelope?
A10)        Brains.   (He also voiced Gordon Tracy, Parker, and quite a lot of Daleks.)
Here’s a thought …
“In humans, ageing represents the accumulation of changes in a human being over time and can encompass physical, psychological, and social changes.”
From the Wikipedia entry on ageing.
And a Beatles tune …

The next ten question set is on 24th October: it’s about Zambia

Your comments will be published, tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!   (Thunderbird 2 was green, Mum!)

†        He certainly voiced a lot of Daleks, Olga!
I think these things come down to cost, Olga: what a given station can afford is what we get!

        Cheers for saying so, Irene!

§        That’s ALWAYS the fact that amazes me, Debbi: McGoohan turned down Bond.   (Have you read some of the novels?   Bond gets through eye watering amounts of benzedrine … )

I hope everything went well today. You comment about the PM reminded me of a conversation with a doctor I met when I first arrived in England. We were quite friendly for a while, but we were talking about another one of the doctors who worked at the same hospital (he was Egyptian) and she told me that he "offended her British soul". The guy was a bit of a cad, but the comment stuck with me, and I don't think we were ever as friendly as before.
Oh, and happy birthday to your sister Ruth!

I so admire McGoohan. And Orwell.

I'll have to read his little treatise there. :)
