Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 2-9-2025 — VJ Day

2nd September, 2025: VJ Day.

Right … it’s officially Tuesday.

And … ?

Frankly, I’m going to be having a quiet day.

After all, it’s not until tomorrow I have a meeting with my Job Centre case worker, and Thursday until I have my quarterly blood tests.

I think putting my feet up could be good.

~≈🦶≈~

As I write … ?

The radio is off.

Just so I’m not distracted.

At the time I did so, Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, was being interviewed on the Today programme: about the many immigrants trying to get to the UK, illegally, over the English Channel.

As I recall, in the last election, one member of Reform called for illegal migrants to be shot, when they landed.

Which, unfortunately, is an idea I find appealing: and may be a deterrent.

I find it appealing: as, I suspect, will many others.

However, I also think it’s an idea that’s very unethical.

I’m also reminded of a scene in a Dr Who story called Genesis of the Daleks.

One where the Doctor asks Davros, the creator of the Daleks, if he, Davors, could launch a plague and kill all life.

The key question I’ve always remembered from the scene?

But would you do it?

It’s one I feel applies to the “Shoot a Migrant” question.

Could you — or me, or them — put a bullet in a gun, point it at a migrant coming off a small boat, and pull the trigger?

Could you?

Cold-bloodedly?

I couldn’t.

But I suspect some could.

That’s not a reassuring idea …

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        2nd September is VJ Day.   In other words Victory over where Day?

Q2)        It marks the Day country in question surrendered.   At the end of what: World War One, World War Two or the Korean War?

Q3)        The surrender took place in which year of the 1940s?

Q4)        The surrender document was signed on which US ship: the USS Colorado, the USS Missouri or the USS New Jersey?

Q5)        This particular VJ Day is the one marked in the US.   When is it in the UK: 14th August, 15th August or 16th August?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        1st September, 2025, is a Monday.   1st September was last a Monday, when: 2014, 2015 or 2016?
A1)        2014.

Q2)        1st September is Wattle Day.   Where: Australia, Brazil or Canada?
A2)        Australia.
Q3)        Germany invaded Poland on 1st September, 1939.   This marked the formal start of what: World War One, World War Two or the Korean War?
A3)        World War Two.

Q4)        Uzbekistan declared itself independent from the USSR, on 1st September.   1st September of which year of the 1990s?
A4)        1991.

Q5)        Finally … ?   1st September is the Feast day of Saint Vibiana.   She’s the patron saint of which Californian city?
A5)        Los Angeles.
Here’s a thought …
“On 2 September 1945, formal surrender occurred …”.
From the Wikipedia Entry on the day.
And a newspiece …

The next ten question set is on 5th September: it’s about On the Road.

Comments will be published, tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!   (It was 2014, and Los Angeles.)

That’s always the way, Olga: the event is on one day, the celebration another.   VJ Day is possibly a good example.
It spams like the Colla’s taking as many precautions as it can.   OK: that’s not going to stop everything: but at least it’s there.
I know a joke that may be relevant to the cold: “I was born upside down: my nose runs, and my feet smell.”   Whether it’s funny is another matter§.
(When my nose gets blocked, it just seems to be the left nostril that gets blocked.   I wish I knew why!)

Who, Gillian Anderson, Debbi?   She is.   But she lived in England, growing up: her father went to the London Film School when she was young, so the family lived in Crouch End¶.   It’s the one thing her and John Barrowman have in common: the term is ‘bidialectical’.

§        I think it’s an old Les Dawson gag, Olga.

¶        It gets mention in the Bus Driver’s Prayer, Debbi: Ian Dury did several versions, over the years.

Morning Paul,
Great words of wisdom this morning, and memories of how London used to be come the end of the War. I hope that we don't disappoint all those who died with the World's actions now.

It's a pretty good joke. I think if people had to actually face and really do many of the things they say, there wouldn't be that many problems in the world. Although, yes, some people might actually do it.
