Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 29-6-2025 — International Day of the Tropics.

29th June, 2025: International Day of the Tropics.

Right …

I’ve officially woken up with an earworm!

Jain’s Makeba, so you know.

Or, at least, I’ve woken up with bits of it floating around my head: the ‘ooo-eee-woo’ bits used in today’s introduction video.

Why … ?

Well …

I noticed Jain’s possibly left-handed in that video: given the way she pops balloons and paints zebras.

But didn’t manage to confirm that with a written source — her Wikipedia entry — until a day or two ago.

A day or two ago … and a couple of days after I’d written this year’s ten-question, Left-handers day quiz*.

My timing’s abysmal … !

~≈👈≈~

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum†, Olga‡, Irene§ and Debbi¶ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s tropical questions, shall we?

Here it is, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        29th June is the International Day of the Tropics.   Earth’s Tropics Zone is between the Tropic of Cancer, and the Tropic of where?

Q2)        Which of these Tropics is the northernmost?

Q3)        Which ‘E’ is in between the Tropics?

Q4)        Earth’s Tropics have a tropical what: climate, mountains or hairdos?

Q5)        Finally … ?   If you’re standing on a Tropic on the relevant day of the year, what will be directly overhead: the Sun, the Moon or the planet Venus?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        28th June is Vidovdan.   Vidovdan is a festival in which country: Bosnia, Serbia or Croatia?
A1)        Serbia.

Q2)        28th June is also the feast day of Saint Irenaeus of Lyon.   Lyon is in which European country?
A2)        France.

Q3)        28th June is also the National Day of Remembrance of Poznań 1956 protests.   Where: Poland, Ukraine or Belarus?
A3)        Poland.

Q4)        The Austro Serbian Alliance was signed in Belgrade on 28th June.   Of which year of the 1880s?
A4)        1881.

Q5)        Finally … ?   During the Korea War, North Korea troops captured what’s now the South Korean capital.   What’s that capital called?
A5)        Seoul.   (You can read about the battle, here.)
Here’s a thought …
“The International Day of the Tropics celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face.”
From the UN page on the day.
And a song …

The next ten question set is on 1st July: it’s about Quebec.

Comments will be published, tomorrow morning.

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Left-handers Day is on 13th August.   You can read more about about it, here, and here.   Earlier Left-hander’s Day quizzes can be found, here.

        Hello, Mum!

Carefully reading a question is very good advise, Olga.   I don’t know how many times I’ve embarrassed myself, setting a question … and getting it wrong, because I’ve not read it back and corrected it.   Just don’t ask about mixing up ‘dive’, and ‘divine’: that’s the last time I’m writing a question about Roberto Baggio … !
White horse of Santiago?   I’m going to have to nick that one, Olga … once I’ve looked it up … !

§        I hope today’s music is OK, Irene.   Most of the days, the music is by someone born on the day: unless it’s a themed set, like today’s.   (Left Hander’s day, this year, has a whole playlist!)

¶        I’ll try and avoid it, Debbi … !   :D   Oh, season three of Strange New Worlds drops on 17th July.
